This fascinating timepiece, dubbed the Quarderdeck Striker, is an electromechanical marvel designed and hand-built by John Hilgenberg, inventor of the air-driven Pneumachron. It is a mechanical clock at heart—just look at all the wooden gears—but its functionality is supplemented with electric servos that drive the rolling odometer time display, the power-maintaining winding mechanism (which Hilgenberg believes is the first of its kind), and the nutcracker bell striker who tolls the naval time every fifteen. Check out the video for a full explanation of the mechanism’s inner workings from Hilgenberg himself. [Makezine] More »
It’s unlikely that any single player will dominate the cloud computing market in the foreseeable future. So more and more enterprise IT leaders are taking a pragmatic, creative approach and adopting a wide range of cloud solutions.
Unlike nearly all other cloud events, CloudBeat 2012 is putting those customers (the adopters) front and center to share their experiences and insights on what really works, who’s buying what, and where the industry is going.
The speaker roster tops that of any other cloud event this year, and the program features a series of never-before-seen case studies lined up with customers including Harvard University, PepsiCo, Dignity Health, Kaplan, and Church of Latter Day Saints, to name a few.

Google Maps has been providing users with indoor maps of malls, airports, and other popular hot spots for the past year or so, but it’s only been available on Android devices, until now. Google announced via Twitter that indoor maps have finally arrived on the desktop. Now you can explore malls and airports from the comfort of your own web browser.
Indoor maps might not be as useful on the desktop web browser than the mobile version, but if you plan on marking out your shopping route ahead of time or you think you may get lost in the airport while traveling over the holidays, the desktop web browser is a great place to plan your route and think ahead of time.
Indoor maps for the desktop is rolling out today, but it comes with a bit of a catch. The desktop version of indoor maps is only offering the main floor of buildings currently, and there’s no word yet on when the ability to view additional levels will be added. Android devices currently have the ability to view multiple levels of buildings.
The other catch is that indoor floor plans are limited to only about 10,000 floor plans in a number of different countries. So, if you live in a smaller town, don’t expect indoor maps to arrive for your local shopping mall for a while — the feature is currently only available for buildings in bigger cities.

Though the Marvel Comics game by the name of Avengers Initiative is indeed available for an elite collection of high-powered Android devices, it’s the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor that’s breaking out the best of the best. The review you’re about to set your eyes on is done on none other than the ASUS Transformer Prime, the first device to sport the Tegra 3 – but chances are you’ll be breaking it out on the super-popular Google Nexus 7 tablet: and lucky you – that device works with a Tegra 3 as well.
This game was introduced for the market the week of Thanksgiving, 2012 – that’s right now, here, at the time of this posting, and here we’ve also got a special promotional price that’s making the download extra enticing. Right now you’ll be able to pick this game up for $4.99 USD – in the future it’s likely to be raised by a buck or two, but for the moment a five-spot will make it yours. It’s developed directly by Marvel Games is ready to not just promote the Avengers movie series, but to be a high-powered game of excellence in and of itself.
Again what you’re looking at in the demo here is the ASUS Transformer Prime, a device that’s more than a few months old but is still one of the most awesome tablets on the market, Tegra 3 and all. This game begins with the Hulk and will be continuing on with updates, special events, and more playable characters and storyline in the future. In other words – this game is set to be a gift that keeps on giving. All “episodic content” updates will be free, mind you – with Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man in the mix for 2013!
Enhancements for NVIDIA Tegra 3-toting devices include improved character textures, slightly more life-like environments, Iso-8 effects (game element with super fun crystal bashing), and realistic clothing – rendering sweetness in-frame! The only thing you might want to be wary of here is the download size – at 1.3 GB, it’s certainly going to be a space-eater you’ll want to think twice about. Otherwise it’s a straight up must-have winner – grab it through the NVIDIA TegraZone right this minute!

In anticipation of a greater holiday season this year, many retailers are now kicking off their sales a few days early. According to the National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to spend about 4.1 percent more this holiday season than last.
Unfortunately, it’s not just retailers who will be using unbelievable offers to lure consumers into parting with their hard-earned cash on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Mobile Tuesday or in the days that precede them. Cybercriminals are also hard at work to offer the most enticing online scams. And if you don’t take the necessary online precautions, your holiday cheer could come to a screeching halt.
Whether you end up shopping now or later, you’ll want to check this list of recommendations that can help you stay clear of some typical and not so typical holiday security threats. (more…)

Well, what’s this, then? Another little tablet from Apple? We surprised ourselves by being quite fond of the first iPad mini, which crossed our desks just a few weeks ago. It strikes the perfect blend of size, performance and capability, but without a proper wireless connection its usability on the road is definitely hampered. Thin and light devices like these were meant to come with you when you leave the house, and you shouldn’t leave high-speed data behind.
So, we’re very glad to now be testing the $459 LTE version of that very tablet, this one Verizon-flavored. It’s every bit as thin and very nearly as light as its WiFi-only predecessor but can send and receive your precious (and also your more disposable) data with way more oomph than before. Is such freedom of connectivity worth the $130 price premium? And, just how bad is the hit to battery life? Let’s find out, together.

It looks like Android 4.0 for the HTC DROID Incredible 2 is still in the works
Posted in: Today's ChiliSo we know that HTC was supposed to release the Android 4.0 ICS updated for the DROID Incredible 2, but so far we’ve only seen a leaked Android 4.0 ROM back in August, with HTC coming forward and acknowledging that there would be a delay in the update sometime back in September. Given that it’s already past the middle of November, we’re sure that there are many DROID Incredible 2 owners wondering if and when the update would arrive for their handsets. With HTC being rather quiet on that front, it would have been safe to assume that the update might have been cancelled or simply forgotten, but thankfully HTC has responded to an enquiry on Twitter about the status of the update.
According to the HTC rep who posted on Twitter, it seems that the company has had some connectivity issue with the software, which apparently explains the delay. It looks like they’re still working on a resolution and they will release more information when it is available. Whether this means the update will arrive next week or next year is anyone’s guess, but for now it’s still a glimmer of hope for DROID Incredible 2 owners.

As some of you guys might have heard, back in September the ITC ruled that Apple did not violate Samsung’s patents, a move which we’re sure Samsung was not pleased by, although as we’re sure that you might be aware of by now that the ITC has since decided to go back and reevaluate its decision. While it remains to be seen if the ITC will stick to their original ruling or reopen the case, Samsung’s Shin Jong-kyun had this to say about the matter, claiming that “without Samsung-owned wireless patents, it’s impossible for the Cupertino-based Apple to produce its handsets.” Shin was also the same person was said a while back that unlike HTC, the Korean company had no plans to reach a settlement agreement with Apple. What do you guys think? Is Shin right in saying that Apple’s iPhone would not exist were it not for Samsung’s patents?

If you were looking to get your hands on an LTE-enabled Android tablet, you might be interested to learn that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has officially launched on Verizon’s network. Unfortunately as is the case with most tablets, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will not be subsidized which means you will have to pay full retail, although the upside is that if you were to get it from Verizon with one of the carrier’s data plans, you will be able to enjoy 4G LTE connectivity while on the go.
Priced at $499, customers can look forward to a 10.1” 720p HD display with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board. It will come with 8GB of internal storage (that’s the model that Verizon is offering) which can be expanded via microSD, so don’t worry too much about not having enough memory. The tablet will also come with a 3.2MP rear-facing camera and a VGA front-facing camera. Not the most powerful tablet we’ve seen to date, especially given that the Nexus 10 is already on the market, but we guess it ultimately boils down to personal preference. In the meantime you can check out our review of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 here.
