The words “labor dispute” make a lot of people imagine big men on a picket line. This, despite the fact that the high-profile workers’ struggles of the past year happened in jobs dominated by women stuck with low wages and little respect: from domestic workers securing benefits in New York state, to Chicago’s teachers’ strikes, to this week’s Black Friday actions organized across the country against Wal-Mart.
Maryland accepted an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference on Monday. Rutgers did the same on Tuesday, expanding the conference’s roster to 14 teams and its footprint to the East Coast.
The new additions would bolster the Big Ten’s reputation for strong academics. Both universities are members of the Association of American Universities, as are all current Big Ten institutions, with the exception of Nebraska.
Their athletic heritages are mixed, however. The Rutgers football team has finished the season ranked in the Associated Press top 25 once in the last 35 years, although it is currently ranked No. 21.

On your way to the airport? While today may not be the busiest travel day of the year, despite the common misconception, there are certainly a lot of people on the road. If you’re part of the pre-Thanksgiving travel crowd, you may find that the hectic schedule throws a wrench in your routine.
As you make your way to your gate or down the interstate, hungry and perhaps even stressed out, it can be tempting to stop at the fast food drive-thrus or airport bakeries and restaurants — a sure way to get extra calories you don’t really need.
“Traveling wears you down, which can make it harder for you to make good food choices. But there are plenty of good options out there,” says Joy Bauer, MS, RD, CDN of Joy Bauer Nutrition Centers and the nutrition expert on the Today Show. So what are they? We asked Bauer and Lisa Young, Ph.D., R.D., C.D.N., a nutrition professor and HuffPost blogger, to take us through a healthy on-the-road eating plan:
Thanksgiving And Eating Disorders: How Our Biggest Feast Can Be Harmful For Disordered Eaters
Posted in: Today's ChiliThanksgiving is a time of feasting and family; outsized in not only i’s portions, but in its expectations of familial harmony. And while it’s a holiday to celebrate the bounty of our blessings, for many — particularly disordered eaters — it can be a stressful reminder of psychological and behavioral patterns that are hard to break under the best of circumstances.
“People need to be mindful that holidays are an evocative, associative time because they are such particular days,” says Geneen Roth, author of Lost and Found and Women Food and God. “And so it becomes easy to say things like, ‘Last Thanksgiving, things were better.’ For example, if you’re not in a relationship and you really want to be and you once were, then unfortunately, what can happen is that your mind can start in on you — you can build an unhappy story about the holidays that can lead you to eat. We tend to build stories and the stories we build often lead to feelings that lead to eating.”
“Freudians would say that people who eat compulsively are literally swallowing their problems — they’re reverting to the earliest, simplest stages of gratification: putting things in their mouths,” says Andrew Getzfeld, PhD, an adjunct professor of psychology who specializes in eating disorders at New York University.
— Merely the premise of “Rust and Bone” sounds uncomfortably maudlin: A wayward single father and part-time fighter falls into an unexpected romance with a beautiful whale trainer who’s just lost both her legs below the knee in a freak accident. Both must undergo drastic transformations that render them as vulnerable as newborn babies. Both are literally and metaphorically broken and must help each other heal.
But it’s the stripped-down way director and co-writer Jacques Audiard tells this story that, for the most part, makes it more compelling than the feel-good plot suggests. With intimate camerawork that explores the lonely corners of his characters’ lives and a prevalent naturalism, Audiard avoids trite, sentimental uplift. This isn’t as powerful as his epic, gripping “A Prophet” from 2009 or as thrilling as 2002’s “Read My Lips.” But it has a quiet intensity and, ultimately, a hard-won sense of optimism.

Jaguar has partially pulled the wraps off of its newest sports sedan, the Jaguar XFR-S, promised to be the fastest and most powerful in the marque’s history. Set for its official global debut at the LA Auto Show 2012 at the end of the month, the new XFR-S will be an even more extreme version of the existing Jaguar XFR, and only the second car to bear the exclusive R-S badging.
The first of those cars, the XKR-S, is a $132,000+ slab of coupe or drop-top insanity, promising a 4.2s 0-60mph dash courtesy of its 550hp supercharged V8 engine. The XFR-S will be more passenger-friendly (it at least has rear seats) though is likely to be no less focused on squeezing out maximum performance: the XFR already has a 510hp supercharged V8 good for a 4.7s 0-60mph run.
It’ll be a rare sight on roads, however, with Jaguar saying that only 100 of the XFR-S cars will be made available in the 2014 model year for the US market. Pricing is a mystery, though with the XFR coming in at $83,200, and the XKR-S carrying a roughly $35k premium over its XKR sibling, figure somewhere around the $120,000 mark.
Jaguar will also be bringing its F-TYPE convertible to the LA Auto Show, the car making its first appearance in the US ahead of sales in summer 2013. The new 2013 Range Rover will complete the trio of new cars, and will also likely be the first to hit US roads, expected to go on sale come December.
