Libon: Free Calls and Visual Voicemail for iPhone

Libon
is a free iOS app that allows users to call for free landlines and mobile numbers in a number of countries. According to Libon, the service offers free calls with HD sound, an audio quality that is not offered by competitive applications on mobile.

Only international Voip out calls are available, calls to local numbers are not possible, however, you can call other local Libon users, they need to download the client from the appstore. I did not try Libon yet, so I cannot confirm the quality of the service.

LG releases “Make phones, not war” ad

We’re sure that most of you guys are aware of the ongoing lawsuits between Apple and Samsung, a situation in which most people have referred to as the patent wars. Now it seems that LG has recently released an ad in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times in which it states (as seen above) that LG “makes phones, not war”. The ad then goes on to state how LG has collaborated with a variety of companies in the past, such as Qualcomm just to name a few. We’re not sure if their “Make phones, not war” slogan was simply stated as a general phrase, or perhaps it could be targeted at the Samsung and Apple situation.

After all HTC and Apple have managed to reach an agreement, and with that some expected Samsung to follow suit although the company did state that they do not have plans to settle, indicating that this patent war could be continuing. Then there is the alternative which is how Samsung is suing LG over its displays, and there is a chance that the ad could be referring to that as well. Either way we won’t speculate too much, but what do you guys think?

Microsoft may have inadvertently given Windows 8 pirates a working activation key

Back in early August, the final copy of Windows 8 was leaked online which we assume was much to the dismay of Microsoft. Pirates got ahold of the copy and distributed it, but thanks to Microsoft’s activation technology, the pirates had yet to figure out a way to fully activate the operating system. Instead pirates had to rely on third party KMS servers that would activate a copy for 6 months before it was required to be reactivated again. Not a huge deal but not exactly elegant, nor was it ideal either. Now thanks to what appears to be a slip up by Microsoft, these pirates have managed to find a way to fully activate Windows 8 without having to reactivate it again every 6 months.

It seems that Microsoft is giving away a free Media Center upgrade to Windows 8 users, an offer that is expected to run until January 31st 2013, and it looks like the pirates have discovered that the key used to upgrade Media Center will at the same time fully activate a pirated copy of Windows 8! According to the folks at The Verge who tried it out on a test machine, this procedure works and they have since reached out to Microsoft for a comment on the matter. We can only assume that Microsoft will be hurrying to patch this up ASAP, but in the meantime it looks like the pirates will be getting away scot-free.

JERUSALEM (AP) — A bomb ripped through an Israeli bus near the nation’s military headquarters in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, wounding at least 10 people, Israeli officials said.

The bus exploded about noon on one of the coastal city’s busiest arteries, near the Tel Aviv museum and across from an entrance to the Kirya, Israel’s national defense headquarters.

AOC unveils new 23-inch i2367fh IPS monitor with thin border

AOC has announced a new display for computer users with a 23-inch panel that it described as virtually borderless. I’d say that’s an apt description too because in the photograph you can hardly make out the border around the screen. The border around my PC display is at least half an inch thick.

The AOC screen is called the i2367fh and the company says it will work for normal computing needs and gaming. The high-performance panel uses In-Plane Switching technology and has a dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000,000:1. The display also has an integrated HDMI port and built-in speakers.

The integrated HDMI port means that you can use the monitor for things such as game consoles or Blu-ray players as well. The bezel around the screen is only 2 mm thick. The screen has a stand that is metallic and hook shaped allowing for two different modes of viewing.

The modes of viewing include a photo frame style without a base and the hook shaped stand can function as a normal computer stand. The native resolution of the screen is 1920 x 1080 in the panel has a 5 ms response time. The screen supports 16.7 million colors and has a VGA input. The display is available right now online for $199.

Jolla shows off Sailfish mobile OS in official video, pushes speed, multitasking

Jolla shows off Sailfish mobile OS, promises 'effortless multitasking,' speed galore

As promised, Jolla has shown off its newly launched Sailfish OS today, and said that UI will be all about speed and multitasking, while also cutting down on the finger dancing required to use it. The experience will start from the homescreen, where users will be able to control music playback or end a call using a “pulley” menu system without needing to open the respective apps. The Finnish startup also said that “many” Android apps would run on Sailfish handsets without modification, though a simple port would be required for best operation. Jolla foresees the software running not only smartphones from hardware players like new partner ST-Ericsson, but also tablets, smart TVs and in-car systems, for instance. To see it for yourself, check out the official video after the break.

Hulu Plus Lands On Nintendo Wii U, Uses GamePad For Second Screen Viewing

Hulu-Plus_Logo

Hulu Plus landed on the Wii at the start of the year and the company has now announced it’s arrived on the Wii U — utilizing the GamePad controller as a second screen so viewers can watch shows on their TV and view additional content, such as episode synopses, on the GamePad.

TV content can also be streamed to the GamePad so the tablet-style controller can be used as a mobile screen to view TV as you move away from the big screen in your living room. A button in the bottom corner of the GamePad’s screen is used to toggle the view between the screens.

Hulu Plus content is accessible direct from the Wii U’s home screen. When scrolling and searching Hulu content the GamePad automatically updates to provide info about the shows and episodes. The GamePad can be used to start watching instantly or to queue up episodes for future viewing.

Hulu said the Wii U will have a commercial-free Hulu Kids section — with more than 43 child-friendly shows on tap, including current season Nickelodeon programming.
