Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, Last Surviving Mumbai Attacker, Executed In India (VIDEO)

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, Nov 21 (Reuters) – India executed Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of a militant squad that killed 166 people in a rampage through the financial capital Mumbai in 2008, hanging him on Wednesday just days before the fourth anniversary of the attack.

Kasab, a Pakistan national, was the enduring image of the bloody assault, which traumatised India and raised fears of copycat attacks on foreign cities. Pictures of the young gunman wearing a black T-shirt and toting an AK-47 rifle as he strode through Mumbai’s train station were published around the world.

The hanging took place early on Wednesday amid great secrecy, underscoring the political sensitivity of the Nov. 26, 2008, massacre, which still casts a pall over relations between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India.

He was buried inside the prison where he was hanged, officials said. India said it would hand over the body to Pakistan if a request was made.

“All the police officers and personnel who lost their life in the battle against the terrorists have today been served justice,” Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said shortly after Kasab was hanged in a jail in Pune, southeast of Mumbai.

It was the first time a capital sentence had been carried out in India since 2004. There was relief on the streets of Mumbai as news of the execution swiftly spread.

“When I heard the news of Kasab’s execution today, I remembered those horrifying moments of the attack. My eyes were filled with tears,” said Vishnu Zende, who was working at Mumbai’s train station on the day of the attack.

In August, India’s Supreme Court upheld Kasab’s 2010 death sentence over the attacks on a string of targets. Nearly 60 people were gunned down in the train station alone. President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his plea for clemency on Nov. 5, although this was not made public until Tuesday night.

“FOOT SOLDIER”

Ten militants arrived on the Mumbai shoreline in a dinghy on Nov. 26, 2008, before splitting into four groups and embarking on a killing spree. They held off elite commandos for up to 60 hours in two luxury hotels and a Jewish centre in the city.

India accuses Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) of organising the attacks and says Islamabad is failing to act against those behind the raids. Pakistan denies involvement and says it is prosecuting seven suspected militants for their role.

“Kasab was a foot soldier, the generals are in Islamabad, in Pakistan, and full justice will be done when they are brought to justice,” Gopalapuram Parthasarathy, a former ambassador to Pakistan, told Reuters.

India and Pakistan’s relations have gradually improved since the attacks, with progress made on trade and economic ties.

Possibly because of the planned execution, India on Tuesday asked Pakistan to postpone a visit this week by its Interior Minister Rehman Malik, saying the dates were “not suitable for us”. Malik was due to put the final seal on a deal to ease visa restriction for travellers.

Kasab’s execution happened very quickly for India’s usually glacial justice system. Three people convicted of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi are still on death row, 21 years after he was killed by a suicide bomb.

Islamabad was informed beforehand about Kasab’s execution, said a Pakistani foreign ministry official who asked not to be identified.

“If all judicial procedures were followed then the decision is acceptable,” the official said.

Raju Ramachandran, one of Kasab’s lawyers, said Kasab was a worried man when he last met him before the death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. He was scared that he would be hanged and asked the lawyer, “Can you please help me get out of jail?”

New Volkswagen Beetles Recalled, Experiences Front Passenger Airbag Issues

It seems that vehicle recalls seem to be getting more and more common these days, and Japanese car manufacturers are not the only ones who are affected, as the recently revealed 2012-2013 Volkswagen Beetles are not exempt. They are the latest batch of cars to be recalled no thanks to issues surrounding the front passenger airbag’s sensor which potentially are unable to detect a child’s car seat. The repercussions of that? Assuming you get into a collision and your child is strapped in his or her child car seat in front, the airbag would still deploy, thinking that an adult is seated in front instead, and this could result in suffocation.

Volkswagen will notify those who are affected, and will replace the faulty control modules for free. Of course, owners who prefer to take the more proactive approach can also call up Volkswagen themselves and make an enquiry. Only 2012-2013 Volkswagen Beetles that were manufactured between February 2012 and August 2012 and equipped with leather sport seats were affected, meaning there are less than 2,500 of such models plying our roads.

Vodafone and Visa announce mobile payments app for Android-toting Aussies

Vodafone and Visa announce mobile payments app for Androidtoting Aussies, Windows Phone on deck

Sometime next year, Vodafone subscribers in Australia can expect to taste the sweet fruit of mobile payments, which comes thanks to the carrier’s partnership with Visa. Computerworld Australia reports that Vodafone SmartPass is currently being tested on Android phones in the land down under, which relies on an NFC-enabled SIM card. It’s also said that the carrier plans to introduce a Windows Phone app, although it has no intention of developing a solution for iOS, which is due to the iPhone’s lack of NFC. While mobile payments still remains a mere pipe dream for many, it’s said that Vodafone will eventually bundle the SmartPass app on all smartphones that support NFC. Unfortunately, the technology may remain cumbersome, as it’ll require users to load currency into a prepaid account for use — something Google has already kicked to the curb. If you’ll recall, Vodafone first announced its initiative with Visa in February of this year, although at the time, it was said that only a few European counties would make the initial cut. To learn more about what Vodafone has in store for its Aussie constituency, feel free to hit up the source link.

Mazda Atenza launches with i-ELOOP regenerative braking

DNP Mazda 6 launches with iELOOP regenerative braking

Nearly a year after Mazda announced its i-ELOOP regenerative braking technology, the company has finally launched a car that implements it: the 2013 Mazda Atenza. Known as the 2014 Mazda 6 in the US, both sedan and wagon models are on sale today throughout Japan. The aforementioned i-ELOOP technology uses capacitors instead of batteries to power the car’s electronic components, and will supposedly increase fuel efficiency by up to ten percent. Other technologies incorporated in the vehicle include i-stop, Mazda’s idling stop system and i-ActiveSense, a collection of safety technologies utilizing cameras and millimeter-wave radars. Customers can opt for either diesel or gasoline SkyActiv engines in either manual or automatic transmission. Suggested retail price ranges from 2,500,000 yen ($30,797) to 3,400,000 ($41,884) including tax. US customers won’t be able take a test drive until the sedan model shows up in US dealerships next year, though it’s unclear if either diesel or wagon options will make it stateside.

Sure, using Skype to keep in touch with family and friends has been one of the more popular ways since the explosion of VoIP programs, but we do know that not everyone knows how to use Skype on a computer to carry out Skype-to-Skype conversations, so sometimes, if you want to keep in touch with family and friends far and near over their mobile phones or landlines, you can always use Skype Credit to make that call. Matt Barkley On Staying At USC: ‘I Don’t Regret It One Bit’

LOS ANGELES — Whenever Matt Barkley thought about his final run down the Coliseum tunnel, the Southern California quarterback never imagined doing it with no helmet, no pads – and his throwing arm in a sling.

Instead of facing Notre Dame for a shot at a national championship, the Trojans’ star quarterback is sidelined with a sprained shoulder. Instead of playing for the nation’s No. 1 team, Barkley’s unranked teammates are playing against it.

Nissan Leaf 2013 To Be Cheaper

Have you decided to jump aboard the electric car bandwagon just yet? Sure, unless you settle for the high end models that cost more than a hundred grand each, electric cars do not have the kind of sprinting performance that petrol powered engines have, but at least they do their part in helping you keep the environment nice and green – to a certain extent, of course. One of the electric cars that we have taken out for a spin so far is the Nissan Leaf, and it seems that 2013 will bring good tidings to Nissan’s flagship electric car.

What kind of improvements do you think we can expect to see in the 2013 model of the Nissan Leaf? Well, there is an expected small, albeit not negligible range boost, where a full charge is said to bring the 2013 Nissan Leaf a cool 228km – with all the other electronics turned off, of course, thanks to its lithium ion battery pack. This is an improvement from the 2012 model that eked out 200km on a full charge. Not only that, a new battery gauge informs the driver the remaining power left in percentage points, in addition to miles remaining, of course.

The 2013 Nissan Leaf has also been priced to move, costing around $31,000 for the base model in Japan, which is a cool $6,000 less than the 2012 edition. I guess this means the second hand market for the 2012 Nissan Leaf model is going to suffer.
