EyeSee Mannequins Keep A Close Watch On Shoppers

Do you sometimes wonder whether the mannequins in shopping centers and malls might actually come alive one day due to some serious form of magic, or being part of a government conspiracy? Well, we might be moving slightly closer to that day of the latter, considering how certain stores such as those under the Benetton Group SpA umbrella have decided to install EyeSee mannequins in their premises. These EyeSee mannequins certainly live up to their name while having a secret task – that is, to monitor the store using a camera that has been embedded into one of the eyes, while using the rest of its body to parade the latest fashion craze that Benetton wants the world to wear.

These visuals will be fed into facial-recognition software, where it is capable of logging in age, gender and race of the people it observes. Originally, such technology was meant to identify criminals in crowded public areas such as at airports and train stations, but it seems that retailers have found a different use for it, to help them personalize store offerings. What do you think of such an idea – it is rather unnerving for us, knowing that mannequins do see what we’re doing. Better make sure I quick that nose picking habit whenever the missus goes out shopping for clothes – a mannequin might be watching!

Disney Movies Online To Kick The Bucket

Not many people would have heard of Disney Movies Online, let alone take advantage of it – which means it makes perfect sense for the new owners of the Star Wars franchise to shut down Disney Movies Online, which is an online movie streaming service. This means the Disney Movies Online will reach the end of their rope by the time 2013 rolls around, and this bit of news should not come as a surprise to anyone, considering it only offers movies from just a single studio (people like choice in case you do not know by now).

As for the small group of folks who are actually subscribed to Disney Movies Online and would be willing to shed a few tears upon hearing news of it demise, it seems that they can make use of a similar redeem code that came bundled with their discs, in other platforms such as iTunes or Windows Media Player. That’s some sort of redemption at the very least, and for those who were optimistic enough in the past to drop serious coin so that they can access Disney Movies Online until the end of February 2013, you are able to put in a request for a refund.

3D Book Scanner Does 250 Pages Each Minute

We are moving into the world of 3D, starting with virtual surround sound to state of the art 3D movies recently, so what about books? Sure, they too have undergone the digital revolution in recent memory, and there is a growing belief among bookworms that preserving one’s printed past is essential. In fact, Dai Nippon Printing has just announced a rather remarkable machine which is capable of scanning books at a speedy rate of 250 pages per minute, and they have laid claim to it as the world’s fastest, thanks to the efforts of Professors Masatoshi Ishikawa and Yoshihiro Watanabe who hail from the University of Tokyo.

This high-speed scanner works differently from the way your multifunction home printer does, where it will use a robotic mechanism that flips through the book, while a pair of powerful cameras above will capture a 3D image of each page. This method is also different from standard issue high-speed scanning devices that require cutting the pages out, which means your tome can be scanned without being mutilated. There is a software within that does all the analzying and correction of each page, resulting in an ultra-crisp 400 pixel per inch (ppi) scan of the page – perfect for conversion into other digital formats like an e-book or PDF. This 3D Book Scanner will most probably hit the markets next year at an undisclosed price.

Samsung's $249 Chromebook lights up benchmarks with the latest Ubuntu build

A Googler managed to load up Samsung’s latest Chromebook with Ubuntu and spelled out the process for like-minded DIYers in October, and now some benchmarks of Mountain View’s $249 machine running Raring Ringtail — which is still in development — have surfaced. With a 1.7GHz dual-core Exynos 5 Dual processor under the hood, the ARM-based machine can hang with — and in some cases beat — the likes of a 1.8GHz quad-core Intel Atom D525 chip and a 1.4GHz quad-core Calxeda Highbank node in benchmarks using the Phoronix Test Suite. The rig also holds its own when pitted against a PandaBoard equipped with an OMAP4460 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Hit the source link to dig into pages of the test results for yourself.

GTA 5 PC Fate Remains Unknown

There has been plenty of buzz surrounding Grand Theft Auto 5 in recent weeks, where we do know that the game itself has been confirmed to arrive on the PS3 as well as Xbox 360 sometime in spring next year, but other than those two consoles, there has been no mention of other platforms to date. If one were to turn back the clock and look at history objectively, majority of Rockstar games do make their way to the PC platform, and we have more or less an idea on when that would happen, but when it comes to GTA 5, the issue of a PC version of the game remains in the balance, as Rockstar’s Dan Houser mentioned that other platforms are under “consideration.”

This is what Houser said in a recent interview, “Everything else is up for consideration. That’s all I can give you. The main thing is we are not… we are a third-party publisher. We’re not Nintendo, we’re not Sony, we’re not Microsoft. We love all of them in different ways. But we can do what we want wherever there’s the appropriate business opportunity and chance to find a market. If that’s on Apple we put something on Apple. Wherever it might be. I think that’s the fun in what we do. We see ourselves as a content company that uses technology. We don’t make it; we use it to make the most fun stuff.”

Do you hope for it to hit the PC platform if you don’t own either one of the two consoles that GTA 5 is headed for?

Kinect Helps Patients Feel At Ease

Being hospitalized is no fun for anyone, and it can be an emotionally as well as financially draining time for the family involved. Well, in order to up the fun factor while reducing all the stress and glum looks at hospitals, a children’s clinic in Miami that specializes in treating children with cancer and blood disorders intends to spice things up with the help of Microsoft Kinect that has the intention of putting patients at ease during the treatment process.

Of course, the Microsoft Kinect is not the only piece in the puzzle, as there will be many other kinds of technology that are being implemented and used to help reinforce patients’ mind-body connection via engaging play and entertainment. The use of technology will also generally function as a method of reducing patients’ fear of technology as well as the kind of treatments they undergo. Perhaps the Wii U has a role to play in this segment as well in the future, and if hospitals and clinics are on a tight budget, the current Wii might suffice?

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch With Windows 8 Arriving Soon

It was not too long ago when Lenovo introduced their ThinkPad X1 Carbon notebook, where this particular mobile computing device came with a lovely carbon fiber body which enabled it to carry a 14-inch display without compromising on portability, especially when it tipped the scales at a mere three pounds. Well, it seems that Lenovo is not content with that, having revealed plans to roll out a spanking new model of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon that was created specially to cater for the new Windows 8 operating system from Microsoft.

There is a product listing for the new version which has been dubbed as the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch, where it has already appeared on the Lenovo website. So far, details remain scant and few at this point in time but the page did reveal that the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch will feature a 10 point touch screen in addition to Windows 8 touch gesture support, of course. It also does seem to point (pun not intended) towards the ability of this new notebook’s screen and keyboard to be positioned in a manner where both of them are flat on a surface, similar to its predecessor. No idea on pricing as at press time though.

Blizzard Black Friday Lets You Save $20 On Hit Titles

Blizzard knows that times are hard these days, and there will always be a market of price sensitive gamers who do not want to pick up a game when it is first released simply because they know that the games will go on sale months down the road. If you happen to fall under that category, then you might be interested to find out that Blizzard is also joining in on the Black Friday sale, letting you save $20 on Diablo III and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.

In fact, Blizzard claims that these savings are “too epic to be contained within a single day”, which is why the Blizzard Black Friday discounts are already set in motion. For this week only, you will be able to save $20 each on Diablo III and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty in the Blizzard Store, making us wonder what are you going to do with the $40 that you save assuming you picked up both titles? Perhaps that extra money could be used to pick up other Black Friday deals on World of Warcraft and its expansions, but this is only available at select retail locations. YouSendit A Windows Phone 8 Exclusive

Do you have any complaints about Microsoft’s SkyDrive when it comes to hosting and sharing your files with the rest of family and friends? Well, here is an alternative that you might want to check out – assuming you own a Nokia Lumia 810, 820, 822 or 920, of course, as the official YouSendIt application from the Nokia Collection is now available. This is an exclusive app for the Windows Phone 8 platform, where it was announced as so back in September this year.

YouSendit enables you to send, share, sync and even sign your documents on the phone itself, and it does not matter if you want to stash away photos or videos, it does seem as though YouSendIt is able to handle all of it without missing a beat. The service will comes in three different varieties, including free (2GB), Pro (5GB at $9.99 per month) or Pro Plus (unlimited at $14.99 month). It is definitely not as good a deal as SkyDrive for the power user, but for the majority in enterprise and business, YouSendIt is more ideal thanks to its emphasis on sending and sharing files.
