AP Reporter Matthew Lee Hammers State Department Press Secretary Over Gaza Crisis (VIDEO)

A journalist with the Associated Press exchanged heated words with State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland during a press conference on Monday over her refusal to be more specific or forceful regarding the U.S. role in the Gaza crisis.

Reporter Matthew Lee bombarded Nuland with a series of questions, often cutting her off mid-sentence, suggesting that the State Department’s approach to diplomacy in Gaza — specifically, that it takes place out of the press’s sightline — had not achieved satisfactory results. He began:

MATTHEW LEE, AP: You say that it would not be helpful for you to discuss any of your conversations, that quiet diplomacy is the way to deescalate that problem. You’ve been doing your quiet diplomacy for almost a week. How’s that going so far?

Facebook speeds to slow a bit during HTTPS transition

Security is a paramount issue surrounding Facebook, with the company regularly tweaking its security settings, sometimes to the chagrin of users. The social network began implementing changes to its infrastructure years ago with the goal in mind of eventually transitioning all users to HTTPS connection. The change is opt-out, and has the potential to cause a tad slow down in speeds.

Facebook began rolling out the transition to HTTPS for users in North America this past week, and will do so for users in the rest of the world soon. The transition was announced in 2011. Said the social network via its Developers blog, “We feel that HTTPS is an essential option to protect the security of Facebook accounts, and since Apps on Facebook are an important part of the site, support for HTTPS in your app is critical to ensure user security.”

HTTPS security has been utilized during the login process, helping keep usernames and passwords safe. Back in January of 2011, the company then began allowing users to opt in to HTTPS browsing, but did so with a warning. “Encrypted pages take longer to load, so you may notice Facebook is slower using HTTPs.”

Users can choose to opt-out of using encrypted browsing once it is implemented if they don’t feel it is necessary, or don’t want to deal with the slightly reduced browsing speeds. You can access the opt-out setting by going into “Account Settings,” then choosing “Settings” on the left-side menu. Click “Edit” next to Secure Browsing and uncheck the box.

Republicans Say Election Losses Just Mean They Need Better Candidates

WASHINGTON — Republican losses in the 2012 elections were not a progressive leap for America or a repudiation of conservatives and the Tea Party — it was just proof the right ran bad candidates, according to two Republican senators with ties to some of races where their side fell short.

The most remarkable losses were in Indiana and Missouri, where the GOP had been looking at near-certain wins until their right-leaning standard bearers both took controversial positions on abortion. Missouri Rep. Todd Akin declared women don’t get pregnant from “legitimate rape.” Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock proclaimed that pregnancy from rape is “something God intended to happen.”

Republicans also fell short in other states that had looked like reliable pick-ups for them back at the start of the election cycle, losing races to Democrats in North Dakota, Montana and Wisconsin.

SAN FRANCISCO — Strong-armed fill-in Colin Kaepernick made all the right throws, looking every bit a capable NFL No. 1 quarterback.
