Krell teams with 2014 Acura RLX as home audio hits the automobile

This week at the Los Angeles Auto Show the folks at Krell Industries have announced that they’re bringing on their high-end performance audio system knowhow to the auto industry for the very first time. They’ll be doing with first with the fabulous 2014 Acura RLX, and will indeed be replicating the home theater system power they’re known for in this vehicle by the time it rolls out inside 2013. With 30 years of knowhow under their belt, we’re pumped up to hear just how great this system aims to be.

With Krell, you know you’ve got super-accurate three-dimensional dynamic sound from top to bottom, in and out, no matter where you’re sitting. Inside a room with Krell across the board, you’ve got a beast of a system without a doubt. Here in the 2014 Acura RLX, you’ll have a completely original system tuned precisely for this vehicle alone.

“We’ve been in business for more than 30 years; we’re well known for making the highest-performance audio products for the home and we are excited to bring our sound quality to the automotive environment. Every aspect of the system’s design was dissected and optimized to achieve a system that is sonically breathtaking.” – Krell Industries President Bill McKiegan

The setup will include many of the same high-powered technologies here in the vehicle that Krell implements in their home audio packages. Starting this party is a set of high quality bipolar power transistors, this implementation resulting in an amplifier 1/3 less distorted than what Krell notes is “a leading competitor’s flagship luxury car amplifier.” This setup also works with both headroom as well as power enough to work with the road and any sort of environment – you’ll hear that album no matter what.

You’ll be working with Zylon mid bass drivers – six of them – made with the world’s strongest super fiber made specifically for speaker manufacturing. This material is made to hold still when the audio is off (instantly) and make all the right moves when the sound makes it so. Less vibration once the sound stops means a cleaner sound in the end – it’s just that simple.

The tweeters you’ve got in this system are made of lightweight magnesium cones created to enhance musical detail and extend high frequencies without making your eardrums bleed from harshness. To keep vibration at a minimum and strength at its maximum, all metal grilles are employed over each speaker.

To top it all off, there’s a carbon fiber composite subwoofer to provide many fine beats. With this beast you’ll have 100 Watts of low frequency sound with “substantial impact” and an extremely clear delivery. Jeff Conrad, Vice President and General Manager of Acura Sales has made it clear that they intend this system to “set the bar for performance audio in the automotive world.”

Keepin’ it real fake: pay peanuts, get a WP-flavored lemon

Keepin' it real fake pay peanuts, get a WPflavored lemon

Either this latest KIRF contender apes Windows Phone to a seriously piratical degree, or someone has simply chopped in a screengrab from an HTC device. Either way, the aptly-named Lemon T109 could at least have tried mimicking the latest version of Redmond’s mobile OS instead of Mango. The handset, which has just popped up in India for the equivalent of $54, accepts a pair of SIMs and boasts a 3.7-inch HVGA capacitive touch display. There’s a “long” 1,200mAh battery that helps fuel features like the King Movie Player, an automatic call recorder and a 1.3-megapixel snapper circa 2004. We’re not sure what the “PC Tablet” accessory refers to, but the free wristwatch on offer could possibly help sweeten the citrusy deal — especially since the other core specs are MIA. The phone may not look like it’s going to smoke anything, but if you’re in the area and desperate for vitamins after all that fried bacon, a tap on the source link might just help you meet your match.

Ready for Takeoff? These Aviation Christmas Ornaments Will Make Your Tree Look Fly

I’ve seen my fair share of geeky Christmas ornaments in recent years, from Star Wars Boba Flakes to Mars Attacks! Christmas ornaments. It’s fun because you get to dress up your tree in ornaments that show off your true, geeky nature. For example, if you’re into sci-fi, then the aformentioned ornaments will obviously tickle your fancy.

If you’re a huge airplane buff, then you’ll probably find these aviation Christmas ornaments off the wall.

PlaneOrnament AThey don’t look like airplanes though, instead, they look like traditional tree ornaments. Upon closer inspection, you’ll see that each ornament features a specific event or special celebration in aviation history, like the 25th Anniversary in Space and the Berlin Airlift. One even shows off the history of the Boeing Flight Test.

PlaneOrnament B

When I was a kid, I remember wanting to be a pilot back then. That was the time when I first heard of Amelia Earhart’s story, and her passion for flying just really got to me. I ended up being an engineer instead, but if opportunity presents itself in the future, I’d definitely jump at the chance to earn my wings. Here’s to hoping.

Each of these Christmas ornaments are available online for $4.71(USD). If ornaments aren’t your thing but airplanes are, then you can find a whole bunch of other aviation-themed stuff on Skygeek.

These Big-Ass Headphones Are Your Better-Than-Beats Deal of the Day

It’s hard to pinpoint when big over-ear headphones went mainstream. It was probably when Dr. Dre/Ludacris/Michael Phelps started endorsing mediocre cans for big bucks. Regardless, big-ass headphones aren’t just for big city cool kids anymore, they’re for everyone: elementary schoolers, teenagers, even your mom or dad. The problem is that when those people ask for headphones for the holidays, they’re asking for (and receiving!) Beats headphones, which, to be frank, are way overpriced. Do them one better this season by giving them the Audio Technica ATH-M50, which is only $105 from Amazon today. More »

popSLATE iPhone 5 case comes with separate e-ink display

Smartphones cases are becoming pretty dry nowadays — it’s mostly just the same old thing for every case. However, one case in particular, called the popSLATE, slaps on a 4-inch e-ink display on the back, effectively giving your iPhone 5 two screens. It’s currently trying to get $150,000 in funding on Indiegogo.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen something like this, though. During IFA 2012 back in August, we checked out a similar concept that involved a smartphone with two screens — one LCD, and the other e-ink. However, the popSLATE case simply adds an e-ink display to your existing iPhone 5, which seems a bit more practical at this point in time.

The 4-inch e-ink screen is always on, but the company claims it’s very energy efficient. The screen can be used for all sorts of things, including notifications, sports scores, maps, and lists and notes. Plus, since it’s always on, you don’t have to worry about the screen going into sleep mode with the rest of the phone when you’re reading something. The company is building an API for the screen, which means that we should be seeing a lot of third-party apps add support for the second screen.

The company is still in the early stages of development and the case itself is only in its prototype stages, but the company has already gathered a team of designers, engineers and developers to make the case. They also have a partnership with E Ink in order to use the latest e-ink technology. Two colors will be available at launch (black and white), and it will start at a price of $79 for the first 500 supporters, then $99 and up from there.

Humble Bundle teams with THQ for Darksiders, Metro 2033, Saints Row: The Third on the cheap

Humble Bundle teams with THQ for Darksiders, Metro 2033, Saints Row The Third on the cheap

THQ may not be an “indie” or tied to Android, but the ailing game publisher is teaming with the much beloved Humble Bundle folks to offer a flexibly priced batch of great THQ games. Zelda-alike Darksiders, spooky shooter Metro 2033, destruction sandbox Red Faction: Armageddon, and the entire Company of Heroes pack highlight the bundle’s standards, while 2011’s greatest Kanye simulator, Saints Row: The Third, comes with the rest should you choose to spend over the average payment price (currently around $5). You’ll have to drop at least $1 for Steam keys to the main titles, but that’ll also net you soundtracks to those main titles as well — sadly, the offer is only available on PC. You’ve got two weeks to make your decision, though we’d call this a no brainer.

Moebius Hanger Bends Time and Space To De-Wrinkle Your Shirts

Don’t even try to wrap your head around this twisted plywood hanger. It’s clearly only designed to support the shirts, belts, scarves, and other accessories of the world’s greatest mathematicians and physicists. No one else has any chance of understanding the mysteries of the universe that let this hanger exist. More »

Humble THQ Bundle includes Company of Heroes, Metro 2033 and more

If you know anything about the Humble Bundle, it’s that you can get a bundle of great games for whatever you want to pay for them. It’s arguably one of the best business models there is, and taking a donations approach instead of a fixed price opens the gates for greater revenue. THQ is one game studio that needs revenue, so they’ve decided to throw together a Humble Bundle of their own.

The bundle includes Darksiders, Metro 2033, Red Faction: Armageddon, Company of Heroes, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor. You can pay whatever you want for these six games, but if you pay at least the average donation amount (which is currently $5.21 at the time of this writing), you’ll also get Saints Row: The Third thrown in as well.

However, while you can pay any amount that you want, you’ll have to pay at least $1. Any amount lower than that and you will only receive the soundtracks to the games, which would still be a good deal, but we’re guessing you want the games more than anything. Of course, we would recommend paying a lot more than $1, since some of the proceeds go to Childs Play and the American Red Cross (and you can choose how much of your donation goes to each).

The games include Windows versions as well as Steam versions, so you’ll be able to import the games directly into Steam once you purchase the bundle. The Humble THQ Bundle has already raised over $220,000 and it keeps rising, so this will no doubt bring a little bit of cash incoming to THQ, which has no doubt been struggling for revenue the past couple years.

Fuji X-E1 Review: Wonderful for Stills, But It’s No Jack of All Trades

The Fuji X-Pro1 was a hit. But at $1700 for the body alone, it was (and still is) bonkers expensive. The new X-E1 is Fuji’s reaction to that. With a pared down body and new kit lens, Fuji could maintain its enthusiast appeal—and attract a broader market. More »
