Apple quietly delays some international iPad mini 4G preorders

Delivery times for some preorders of the iPad mini WiFi + Cellular have slipped back into early December, with Apple quietly updating its tracking system from the original “late November” estimate for international buyers. Some shoppers checking their order status today have found that Apple has pushed back the delivery to December 4, even if they placed orders for the 3G/4G-enabled tablet shortly after it went up for sale.

According to SlashGear’s checks with UK orders, the change in shipping estimates appears to have impacted the cheapest WiFi + Cellular model, the 16GB version. That, as per the screenshot above, now lists a December 4 delivery date; however, the same constraints don’t appear to have affected more expensive versions.

A separate order for the 32GB iPad mini WiFi + Cellular – placed at the same time as the 16GB order – shows that it is expected as much as a week earlier than its cheaper counterpart. Apple suggests it will arrive between November 26 (in keeping with the “late November” timescale originally promised) and December 3.

Sales of the iPad mini with 4G kicked off in the US at the end of last week, though demand for the tablet means that new online orders aren’t expected to ship for another two weeks. A similar delay is listed for new international orders.

Update: Looks like the delays could be color dependent, too. Al Sutton‘s order for a 32GB white & silver iPad mini WiFi + Cellular has also been pushed back to December 4:

The Seven Deadly Rings

If the Seven Deadly Sins were somehow transformed into rings, then these would be them. Presenting Stephen Webster’s collection of rings that are so sinfully bad that they’re good:

seven deadly rings

A description of the rings:

Envy is, of course, a representation of the green eyed monster lurking under a lush green peridot while for Pride a purple tanzanite is surrounded by a ruff of peacock feathers. Gluttony are wide-open cherry red bejewelled lips with glossy white teeth just waiting to chomp up anything edible. Wrath shows a woman’s hands clutching a chalice of poison.

Greed looks like a pile of gold coins topped with diamonds, while Sloth features an aquamarine set lazily in a plush red cushion. Lastly, Lust is a tangle of arms and legs surrounding a gorgeous, deep blue stone.

They’re extremely limited too, since only seven of each of the seven Deadly Sins rings will be made. Which sin is your favorite?

OK Slingshot Man, This Poison Arrow Is Officially Going Too Far

Watching watermelons and sheets of plywood meet their demise at the hands of a twisted slingshot creation is entertaining. But Joerg Sprave’s latest creation, a custom crossbow bolt that’s been modified to deliver a lethal dose of poison, is a little disheartening since it was created for killing, not just smashin’ stuff. Hitman: Absolution Contract Mode can be accessed even if bought pre-owned

hitman absolutionBuying brand new games can get pretty expensive, and hardcore gamers who burn through games quickly will find themselves burning a hole in the wallets fairly quickly as well, which is why there still exists a market for pre-owned games which caters to gamers who don’t necessarily need to play the latest and greatest the moment it has been released. Now the good news is that if you were thinking about picking up Hitman: Absolution pre-owned and were worried that you might not be able to access Contracts because the online pass might have been used by its original owner, fret not as Square Enix has confirmed that they will be dispensing with the online pass system.

What this means for pre-owned game buyers is that if you were to pick up Hitman: Absolution secondhand, you’d still be able to access the game’s Contract Mode for free. In a statement Square Enix released to the folks at CVG, “We’d actually planned to have this mode accessible via a code in the game’s box, but we really want to make it available to anybody that plays the game – so we want to take a new approach.”

Opera launches Unlimited Music service in Russia

Opera is probably a name that many have come to associate with browsers, not just for the desktop, but for the mobile as well. Now it seems that Opera wants to venture outside of its core competency and has since launched a music service of its own called Unlimited Music. The soft launch of their music service was done in Russia and much like other music services, Unlimited Music is expected to be subscription-based where users can download and stream their favorite songs. However according to an Opera spokesperson, Opera is not the owner of the content, but rather the enabling layer which basically means that Opera is working with another provider.

Android and Windows Phone users will get to stream and download music, while iOS users will only get the streaming option. Opera’s Unlimited Music service will cost 150 Rubles a month which is about $4.73 and will launch with 2 million tracks, a combination of both Russian and non-Russian music. Opera will be trying out their service in Russia first before deciding on whether to expand to other markets around the world.

Microsoft expects Windows Phone 7.8 to stick around for a while

With Windows Phone 8 being Microsoft’s latest and greatest iteration of their mobile operating system, we’re sure that there are many WP7.x owners who are worried that Microsoft would leave their version by the wayside to focus on WP8 and the future. After all with WP7.5 devices not being eligible for upgrade to WP8, we guess we can’t blame them. Microsoft’s answer to that problem is with WP7.8, an update which is expected to be rolled out to WP7.5 devices in the near future, but with the next major WP iteration expected for 2013 (we’re assuming Microsoft is making major updates on a yearly basis like Android and iOS), what will happen to WP7.8 owners?

Well it seems that Microsoft has plans for WP7.8 and if you thought it was merely to satisfy WP7.5 owners for the time-being, you could be wrong. According to corporate vice president of the Windows Phone division, Terry Myerson (via TechRadar), he has revealed that Microsoft expects WP7.8 to exist for quite a while. We’re not sure how long is “a while”, but it seems that WP7.8 is expected to be the lower-end of WP devices, which means that Microsoft and their OEM partners will create WP7.8 devices with lower price points in order to get the Windows Phone platform into as many hands as possible.

Giant solar prominence caught on video

The sun is very harsh environment to say the least. The surface of the sun often interrupts with massive flares and other phenomena that can send radiation hurtling towards the earth. Those eruptions can interfere with television, GPS, and radio broadcasts among other things here on Earth.

The sun had a massive solar prominence last week that was captured on camera by an orbiting NASA spacecraft. The first solar prominence occurred at 1 AM EST with a second occurring four hours later. As you can see in the image, the solar prominence was so massive that part of it was outside the camera’s field of view.

The photograph and the video of the massive solar prominence was captured by the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory. The massive red plasma loop was made of electrically charged hydrogen and helium. The good news about the massive eruption that occurred last Friday was that it was not aimed at Earth.

These massive storms have become increasingly common due in part to the fact that the sun is in the middle of its 11 year solar weather cycle most active phase. This particular active phase is expected to peak in 2013. You can check out the video of the giant solar flare below.
