Sol And Christine Moghadam, Trying To Adopt Children, Accused Of Child Trafficking And Imprisoned (VIDEO)

When Sol and Christine Moghadam went to Ghana to adopt two boys and two girls, the couple was taken at gunpoint and put behind bars. They were accused of child trafficking, the couple recounted to CBS Friday in the video above.

The pair, from Irvine, Calif., had already adopted two boys, Ethan and Isaac, and were celebrating a Ghananian judge’s approval of adopting Stephen, Derrick, Phillis and Illeana — four siblings who were about to be put in an orphanage.

Moments before the Moghadams were going to go to lunch to celebrate, police arrested them and said they had forged the judge’s approval. They had to watch as the children were ripped out of their arms and taken to an unknown place.

Apple officially killing Messages beta for Lion users next month

It’s been a long time since we talked about the Messages beta for Mac OS X Lion, but today it’s working its way back into the news. It seems that Apple is gearing up to pull the plug on the last few stragglers who have enjoyed access to the Messages beta after the launch of Mountain Lion, sending out an email today that says the beta will soon be ending. Our own Craig Lloyd had one of these emails land in his inbox just a few minutes ago, and you can check it out after the jump.

As it turns out, Apple has decided a solid end date for the Messages beta: December 14, 2012. That’s just under a month from now, so if you’re still using the Messages beta on Lion, your days are numbered. Of course, if you want to continue using Messages, it can be found in OS X Mountain Lion, which Apple unsurprisingly suggests users upgrade to. Here’s the email for Apple:

The Messages Beta program for Lion will end on Friday, December 14, 2012. We hope you’ve enjoyed the opportunity to preview Messages.

If you’d like to continue using Messages, upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store. Messages is one of many great new apps and features built right into OS X Mountain Lion.

Thank you for your participation in the Messages Beta program.

Mountain Lion, which currently is at version 10.8.2, is available on the Mac App Store for $20. That’s not too bad a price for an OS upgrade, so it isn’t much of a surprise that we saw so many Mac users take advantage of it back when it launched back in July. We reviewed Mountain Lion when it launched, deciding that there was a lot of value in the new version of Mac OS X, especially for just $20.

With that in mind, it might not be a bad idea to upgrade anyway. After all, you get a full version of Messages along with all of the other features Mountain Lion brings with it. Did any of you get this mysterious email popping up in your mailbox today?

Twinkie Shortage Shows Hostess Fans Went A Little Crazy Over Bankruptcy

Steve Ettlinger, author of Twinkie, Deconstructed, a book on the ingredients found in processed foods, received 13 interview requests by Friday afternoon to comment on the bankruptcy of junk-food maker Hostess Brands.

Ettlinger, a writer living in New York City, first realized how worked up people got about Twinkies after his book came out in 2007. “The popularity of Twinkies was something I discovered,” he said. “Now people call me the Twinkie man.”

“There’s something peculiar about them because they’re so small and blond,” Ettlinger said. “People feel really strongly about it.”

iFixit pries open Google’s Nexus 4, exposes somewhat stubborn battery (update: repairability verdict, LTE chip)

iFixit pries open Google's Nexus 4, exposes somewhat stubborn battery (update: repairability verdict)

The warranty-voiders over at iFixit decided to spend their Friday evening tearing into a freshly delivered Nexus 4 and have given us a peek inside Google’s smartphone darling. After removing a pair of screws and spending a few minutes prying off the rear cover, the teardown specialists found that the backplate’s sparkling exterior isn’t the only thing that makes it special. In addition to serving a cosmetic purpose, the hind side plate packs a handful of pressure contacts that power the handset’s NFC antenna and connect its wireless charging induction coil. Extracting the battery required evicting additional screws and a fair amount of elbow grease to wrangle the 2100 mAh pack free from adhesive. As for the motherboard, its removal was a relatively easy process comprised of freeing it from a couple of connectors. The outfit’s final verdict on the device’s repairability isn’t in just yet, but you can tap the source link below to gaze at the LG-made phone’s innards.

Update: iFixit has given Mountain View’s smartphone a 7 out of 10 score in terms of repairability. The three point mark-down stems from a tricky battery removal experience and the glass front, which is fused to the display and its frame. Also, despite the lack of LTE support, a close look at the motherboard reveals a Qualcomm WTR1605L seven-band 4G LTE chip.

Alexander R. Richter, Wisconsin Student, Accused Of Sexually Assaulting The Kids He Babysat

MILWAUKEE — A Wisconsin college student is accused of molesting six young children and videotaping the assaults under such titles as “Monster Unleashed,” and police said Friday they think there are more victims.

Alexander R. Richter, who attended Gateway Technical College, was jailed on 49 felony charges after authorities say he volunteered to baby-sit his classmates’ children and then repeatedly had sex with the boys and girls on camera as they cried and begged him to stop. Police said they have identified six children in videos and photographs recovered from Richter’s home in Racine, about 30 miles south of Milwaukee.

Scott DesJarlais Backed By Pete Sessions, FedEx, Tea Party In Waning Days Of Election

Scandal-scarred Tennessee Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R) didn’t get a lot of help from his party after revelations emerged about the physician lawmaker’s past affair with a patient, who he also urged to get an abortion.

But federal election records show that more than $30,000 did come rushing in at the last moment. That help included a donation from one very prominent member of the party that rushed to DesJarlais’ aid just as Democrats were trying to unseal court records detailing DesJarlais’ multiple affairs in his 2000 breakup with his then-wife.

That donor was National Republican Campaign Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-Texas), who donated $2,000 to his embattled colleague. An NRCC spokesman did not immediately answer an email request for comment.

Sid Mohn: A Gift Bigger Than Ourselves

We each have a long list of things to be thankful for — each and every one of us. So let’s remind ourselves of those whose list is much shorter and of the fact that we’re able to change that by helping to ending poverty once and for all, one gift at a time.
