University of Athens prints polymer circuits with lasers, speeds us towards lowcost electronics

The dream of ubiquitous technology revolves around cheaper materials, and polymer circuits could help make the dream a reality… if the solvents used to produce the circuits didn’t cause more problems than they cured, that is. The National Technical University of Athens has developed a more exacting technique that, like most good things in science, solves the crisis with lasers. The approach fires a laser at a polymer layer (covered by quartz) to throw some of that polymer on to a receiving layer; by moving the two layers, the scientists can print virtually any 2D circuit without resorting to potentially damaging chemicals. Any leftover worries center mostly around risks of changing the chemical composition as well as the usual need to develop a reliable form of mass production. Any long-term success with laser-printed polymers, however, could lead to more affordable technology as well as more instances of flexible and wearable gear — there might not be much of a downside to ditching the circuit status quo.

Is Twitter’s Latest Mobile App Update a Glimpse Into the Future?

Twitter has slowly been pushing itself through a kind of reinvention, hoping to come out the other side as a whole new social media butterfly. The most recent part of this transformation came last night in the way of updated mobile apps, and they hint at what the rest of Twitter may turn into. More »

KeySquare: A Keychain That’s Definitely Not for Squares

I’ve lost plenty of keys, off carabiners as well, so I’m always looking for a more secure option for my keys. Unlike carabiner keychains, KeySquare wasn’t designed to help you climb mountains, but it was specifically made for carrying your keys.

KeySquare is cut and machined from a solid block of stainless steel, and hand-finished for durability. There’s a long slit which will attach securely to a belt loop, but it’s still small enough to slide into a pocket. It also doubles as a bottle opener.

KeySquare was launched as a Kickstarter project, and with 26 days left in funding, they have amassed over $31,000 – blowing through their $10,800 goal. It will most definitely be made and in order to snag yours, you’ll have to pledge $36 (USD).

Nintendo launches iOS Pokédex app in Japan

Pokéfans take note, because Nintendo has released a new Pokédex app and, of all platforms, it’s on the iOS App Store. This is officially the company’s first paid app to go live on the iOS App Store, which is a pretty big deal considering how much Nintendo likes to rail against the idea of smartphone gaming. Sadly, it’s only available on the Japanese App Store at the moment, and there isn’t any word on whether or not it will make its way overseas.

In any case, this Pokédex app only covers the Pokémon of the Unova region at first. The app itself costs 170 yen, but four additional packs that add Pokémon from previous games can be purchased for 500 yen each. That puts the total cost of this app at just about $26.70, so Pokémon trainers might be better off going for the recently released Pokédex 3D Pro for the 3DS instead, which features almost every Pokémon for $15 (a price some still find too expensive).

The app is compatible with iOS 6 iPhones, iPods, and iPads, and it’s even been optimized for the iPhone 5′s screen. For those who have never used either of the Pokédex apps on the 3DS, the concept is pretty straightforward: you select a Pokémon and the app not only shows you a picture of that creature, but also gives you a slew of information on it. If it’s mostly the same as the 3DS Pokédex apps, then it should be a handy tool for serious Pokémon players to have on hand.

Of course, this isn’t the first app that Nintendo has released on the iOS App Store – last year’s Pokémon Say Tap? has that distinction. It is, however, the first paid app that Nintendo has put out, so there’s some significance there. Perhaps we’ll see more companion apps for other platforms in the future? We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Diving Pigs Make For Tastier Bacon, Says Chinese Farmer Huang Demin

One Chinese pig farmer says he has an usual way to produce better tasting bacon. Huang Demin of Ningxiang county in Hunan province makes his pigs dive, every day, from a roughly 10-foot-tall wooden platform into a pond.

China Daily writes that Huang believes the diving improves the pigs’ immunity against disease, enabling them to eat more and grow faster. The quality of the pork, he claims, is greatly improved as a result.

Whether or not that’s true, we can’t deny that a sty’s-worth of diving pigs makes for quite a spectacle. Not that they seem to enjoy it; Huang has to push the pigs forcefully before they’re willing to jump. The amount of squealing in the video below seems to confirm that — but Huang says they love it in the end. He sells the meat for three times the price of a normal pig.

BitTorrent lands deals with 20 TV makers for peer-to-peer video

Vestel BitTorrent TV

The file sharing crew at BitTorrent has so far taken only tentative footsteps into the living room with its certification program. If CEO Eric Kinkler’s comments to Multichannel News are any indicator, though, the company is ready to make itself at home. He reveals that BitTorrent has signed pacts with 20 electronics makers to include its peer-to-peer service for media streaming in new TV sets, some of which will ship as soon as the end of 2012. Kinkler isn’t naming the partners, but he notes that most of the torrent-ready screens are destined for Asia and Europe rather than the US — many TV builders in American shops already have a raft of streaming video deals with the likes of Netflix, the executive says. Don’t anticipate seeing a row of BitTorrent TVs in the local big-box store, then, but do expect the firm to make a name for itself beyond software and the occasional router.
