Vivian Norris: Narcissists and Children of Narcissists: Yes It Is Getting Worse!

Could it be that the fact that the 1960s me generation of so-called free love, dedication to self more than to community and others is now taking its toll in bringing the West an epidemic of Narcissism? And what of the children of these self-centered people? As we well know, many of the so-called free love baby boomers have morphed into yuppie greed mongers. And these folks reproduced! So now we have a bunch of narcissistic CEOs, who have passed on their own messed up “priorities” to their offspring. The emptiness and danger to our planet as these folks actually have any kind of power over others is frightening.

I have been been speaking to a number of people in Europe and the US over the past few months, including therapists, healers, mothers, young women, environmentalists, high school students, journalists…basically a cross-section of human beings, and every single one of them agrees, Narcissism is more prevalent than ever before. It is getting worse! It seems every person I speak to about this has a horrific story of encountering people who lack empathy, act like bullies, believe themselves to be part of some kind of elite, or who have abused others, including their own children, in order to fill their narcisisstic egos.

The trail of destruction has lead many to the therapist’s office, and the number of books being sold on the subject of narcissism, emotional vampires, victims of abusers, is simply astounding. Articles are appearing left and right with titles such as “Is your Boss a Psychopath?”, “How to Spot a Narcissist”, “Emotional Vampires”, or my favorite,’How to be a Narcissist Witout Being a Jerk” (as if that were possible).

Jason Salzman: GOP Leader Says CO Election Results Signal "Anti-Christian Bent" in CO

During the campaign, Republicans argued that restrictions on abortion and women’s health should be accepted as religious freedoms, not a war on women. Sen. Greg Brophy’s comments leave me thinking he won’t back away from the election rhetoric.

End The Drug War: David Sirota Calls Out President Obama To Take A Serious Step Toward Legalizing Marijuana

What’s next? Amid all the munchie-themed jokes from reporters, political elites and late-night comedians, this remains the overarching question after Coloradans voted overwhelmingly to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana in the same way alcohol is already legalized, regulated and taxed. Since those anti-drug war principles are now enshrined in Colorado’s constitution, only the feds can stop this Rocky Mountain state – if they so choose. But will they? And should they even be able to?

Best Tweets: What Women Said On Twitter This Week

We’ve written about Ryan Gosling before in Tweets of the Week — and on HuffPost Women in general — but this week it would be inexcusable not to. That’s because Monday was Ryan Gosling’s birthday!

In honor of the actor’s 32 glorious years on this planet, we compiled his best quotes over the years, and we weren’t the only ones with Gosling on the brain. Buzzfeed agreed with us that he was once again robbed and should have been People’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” and Ryan got plenty of love from women on Twitter.

Stephanie McMaster was probably spot-on when she tweeted: “I bet Ryan Gosling doesn’t even blow his candles out. He probably just winks at them and they faint.” And Anna David wisely used his name to indicate something that’s the best of its class: “Okay you guys I get it, Chrome is the Ryan Gosling of browsers. Maybe I’m intimidated because I can’t seem to pull the trigger.”

Koregan Quintanilla, Abandoned Boy, Gets Birthday Wish And Meets Texas Fireman Who Saved Him

ARLINGTON, Texas — When fourth-grader Koregan Quintanilla was talking with his classmates about where they wanted to go more than anyplace else in the world, his answer wasn’t an amusement park, sporting event or kids restaurant. It was “his” fire station.

Koregan was abandoned in 2002 at an Arlington fire station when he was just a few hours old. Texas’ Baby Moses law allows a parent to leave an unharmed infant up to 60 days old at a fire station or hospital with no questions asked. Child Protective Services then takes custody of the babies.

Homeless man jailed for charging his cellphone in a park

28-year old Darren Kersey is homeless, and he needed to charge his cellphone badly. So he decided to use an electric outlet at a public picnic shelter in Gillespie Park. But to Kersey’s surprise, he was arrested instead by a police officer for stealing city utilities. Sarasota Police Sgt. Anthony Frangioni arrested Kersey on Sunday last week and told the 28-year old that “theft of city utilities will not be tolerated during this bad economy.”

The officer also told Kersey that he should have charged his cellphone at local shelters, and not in the park. Kersey was eventually jailed because he was not able to pay the $500 bail. Thankfully, on Monday this week, Judge Charles Williams dismissed the case against Kersey saying that Frangioni lacked “legal justification to make the arrest.”

The Herald Tribune contacted Frangioni for a statement, but didn’t comment on the report. Gillespie Park is a quiet reserve that has a small pond, a playground, and a few picnic shelters. Interestingly, the Herald Tribune reports that two homeless people on Monday were also charging their cellphones on the same area where Kersey was arrested. The incident happened just a couple of hours earlier.
