The Taliban Mistakenly Outed Every Single Person on Its Mailing List

If you didn’t already know that the Taliban had a mailing list, your mind is already blown. But here’s a solid one-upper: the Taliban spokesperson accidentally CC’d everyone on that list in an otherwise pedestrian email, outing some people who likely didn’t want the world to know they were subscribers. HTC Droid DNA headed for Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless just announced that they will be offering the HTC Droid DNA, which is touted to be the highest resolution Android-powered smartphone to date. What is that you said about the iPhone’s vaunted Retina Display? It is no match for the HTC Droid DNA that sports a higher pixel density, and also a far larger display at 5” with Full HD resolution support. Needless to say, the HTC Droid DNA is the flagship device of HTC, and it looks set to make its mark this holiday season among smartphone buyers.

HTC used to be on the cutting edge of smartphone offerings with their Desire range, but time has seen them lose out on other more competitive companies, with Samsung leading the pack where top of the line Android-powered devices are concerned. Well, the HTC Droid DNA will certainly drag the Taiwanese company back into contention, and hopefully it will be able to win back confidence among smartphone users who are looking to upgrade their devices later this year.

Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Tami Erwin said, “We think it’s poised to be a real blockbuster for the holidays and certainly into 2013.” Just how much will Verizon Wireless price the HTC Droid DNA? Well, it looks priced to move at $199 a pop, where you will need to sign up for a two-year contract of course. The HTC Droid DNA will go up on sale this coming November 21st, which is one day before Thanksgiving, marking the unofficial start of the shopping season.

As a refresher, the device itself will come with a generous 5” display as well as boast high-resolution image quality for photographs and video. Boasting a pixel density of 440 pixels per inch, it outdoes Apple’s iPhone 5 by far and large (which has a pixel density of 326ppi) and the Samsung Galaxy S3 at 306ppi.

Taxi service apps could be hit by a proposed ban on GPS metering

Taxi service apps could be hit by a proposed ban on GPS meteringTaxi and car-sharing apps which quote for journeys based on GPS data could find themselves outlawed by regulators. Transport authorities across fifteen US and Canadian cities are looking at a set of rules that would prohibit anything except physical metering to calculate the cost of a trip. The proposals would also put the kibosh on demand pricing, whereby quotes automatically rise when more people are making bookings, and also on the use of drivers who don’t have proper taxi licenses. Some of these practices are already banned in a number of states, and in fact three online transport services — Zimride, SideCar and our old friend Uber — were fined in California this week precisely for allowing unqualified hands to take the wheel. If the current proposals are adopted, the role of smartphones would likely be restricted to hailing regular taxis or putting electric money into traditional cabbies’ pockets.

Your Car Finally Gets the GoPro Mount It Deserves

There’s nothing more resourceful than an amateur filmmaker on a budget, but these days there are more and more affordable tools that can make any production look professional. And while the VectorMount GoPro hood mount can’t replace a Hollywood-style drivable film rig, it doesn’t limit low-budget directors to just a static shot on a moving vehicle. More »

What Are Your Most Powerful Memories of Technology?

I’ve got some family shit going on right now, and it’s making me nostalgic. The memories floating to the surface are overwhelmingly of my sister and my parents. But right there along with my family are the times I spent with technology—a surprisingly prominent cast member in the movie inside my mind. More »

Kobo Arc now on sale in Canada, UK, and France

Kobo has announced that their newest device, the Arc tablet, is available for purchase in Canada and the United Kingdom, while France will have it stock starting on Monday. Kobo is an often forgotten brand, thanks to the dominance of Amazon’s Kindle series of products, as well as Barnes & Noble’s NOOK ereaders and tablets. However, it seems Kobo is looking to make an international dent in the market with its Arc tablet.

The Arc tablet will be available at Indigo-Chapters, Best Buy, and Future Shop stores in Canada, while the UK will have the tablet in stock at WHSmith, and at Fnac Booksellers in France. Pricing will start at $199.99 for the 16GB model, while $249.99 will get you a 32GB version and $299.99 for the 64GB variant.

The Kobo Arc is Google-certified, and features a 7-inch 1280×800 HD display (215ppi), with a 1.5GHz OMAP 4470 dual-core processor running the show. It comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but surprisingly, Kobo says that they’re already working to roll out an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

With access to Google Play, as well as the company’s own content, Kobo Arc users have access to a wide range of Android apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and of course, books (and lots of them). While the Kobo Arc looks to be a real competitor in the 7-inch tablet market, the bigger companies currently have a hold on it, especially Google, who recently launched an updated Nexus 7 tablet, as well as their new Nexus 10.

Legend Of Zelda LEGO Hyrule Map: It’s Dangerous to Go Along, Take Bricks

It’s easy to get lost during a video game adventure. Here, take this. This LEGO Hyrule map won’t fit in your pocket, but it will help you get your bearings while you seek Princess Zelda.
zelda overworld map
This LEGO map of Hyrule is from original Legend of Zelda and was created by madoruk for BrickCon 2012. The detail is amazing Each LEGO stud on the map represents one 16 x 16 section of pixels in the game. The full map measures 256 x 88 studs. I need this now!

This would look great on any Zelda fan’s wall. Especially if you get lost in the game so badly that you have been trying to create your own map.

NTT DoCoMo readies first dual-mode HSDPA, LTE femtocell for December

NTT DoCoMo readies first dualmode 3G and LTE femtocell for December

LTE’s frequent gotcha has been indoor coverage: as it often relies on high frequency ranges outside of the US, the signal can drop off quickly at home or in the mall. There have been LTE femtocells before to fill in the gaps, but NTT DoCoMo claims to have the first mini cell site that would cover our needs much more thoroughly. The Japanese carrier’s new base station run simultaneous 112.Mbps LTE and 14.4Mbps HSDPA (sorry, no HSUPA upload speeds) on the 2GHz band to keep 3G data and voice working side-by-side with 4G, piping both through a wired broadband connection; there’s no need to sacrifice the basics or legacy support just for a better LTE signal. NTT DoCoMo plans to sell the dual-mode femtocell to local homeowners, offices and stores in December. Sadly, there’s no immediate word of plans for femtocells that support networks abroad, although the technology’s existence gives us hope that we’ll see it spread to other providers — and that black holes in cellular coverage will be distant memories.
