Australian Federal Government pledges A$20 million to help local gaming industry

Good news gamers, if you’ve enjoyed playing games that might have been developed by an Australian game studio, you might be interested to learn that the Australian Federal Government has recently pledged A$20 million to help further the local gaming industry. According to the Federal Arts Minister, Simon Crean, this move is expected to help Australia “reclaim their competitive advantage”. Of course gaming studios will be screened before deciding who gets the money and how much will be given, but so far we like the reasoning behind Crean’s decision:

“I used to think games were just things where you blow people up. I didn’t realise the great diversity of content that is involved. The game industry is vibrant and constantly changing, and the fact that it’s already worth so much both here in Australia and overseas really surprised me. Australia can, and should, secure a bigger slice of the action.”

Hitman: Absolution’s art director thinks the game was limited by current-gen consoles

It seems that when it comes to next-gen consoles, there are developers on either side of the fence. Some claim that current-gen consoles still have a lot of life left in them, while other claim that current-gen consoles are reaching the end of their life and reaching their limits, and apparently Hitman: Absolution was faced by said limitations. This was revealed by the game’s art director, Roberto Marchesi who was quoted in an interview with Trusted Reviews that there were things he would have liked to implement in the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of Hitman: Absolution but couldn’t due to the current hardware.

He was also quoted as saying that this “does start to show the limitations of the current technology.” That’s not to say that he didn’t enjoy making Hitman: Absolution for current-gen consoles – in fact Marchesi seemed to welcome the challenge, stating that, “The first games that will come out for the next generation of consoles will probably be just like an up-scaled version of everything […] All the textures will be ramped up twice, the resolution, everything…that’s really just a brute-force approach to making great-looking games, and, in a way, it’s much more of a challenge doing it with this current generation.”

The official Pokedex makes its way onto iOS devices in Japan

While there exist unofficial Pocket Monster apps in the iTunes App Store, we have a feeling that many Pokemon players might soon start switching over to the official app if and when it makes its way out of Japan. Yup the Pokemon Company has announced the official Pokedex for iOS. It appears to be similar to the Pokedex 3D Pro for the Nintendo 3DS and allows players to sort through Pokemon based on number, type, statistics and the likes. The base app itself will cost around ¥170, but users can add on more like the Kanto Dex, Johto Dex, Hoenn Dex and the Sinnoh Dex for ¥500 each. The app will be released today (16th November) and more information can be found on its website assuming you can read Japanese. At the moment it does not appear as though there are plans to bring the app stateside or to other countries outside of Japan, so unless you know how to read Japanese and have a Japanese iTunes account, you will just have to play the waiting game for now.

Motorheadphones helps you rock your ears out

Having a decent pair of headphones or earphones are useful, especially when you do have quite the delectable collection of digital audio files that are begging to be listened to. Firebox has made available a couple of Motorheadphones to rock your ears out – where you can choose from the £79.99 Bomber and the £99.99 Iron Fist. We ourselves have seen a bunch of rapper-sponsored Hip Hop headphones to date, so it makes perfect sense to bring balance to the scene with Rock taking up some sense of ownership, and which better candidate to make this particular stand for sweaty other than the mighty Motörhead

Merging hard wearing, ‘heavy-metal’ (in reality, it is actually very lightweight) construction alongside superior, velvet-coated comfort; either pair of headphones that you purchase will boast of a stripped back black design that feature the Heavy Metal heroes’ emblem on both cans. The Bomber is said to be ideal for wearing out and about, where it comes with an in-line mic and volume controls, while the Iron Fist sports a 3.5mm jack (6.3mm jack included), flexible ear cups, and both of them are officially endorsed by the band.

Netflix offers its first trailer for House of Cards

Netflix has been working hard to add additional streaming content from partners, but to bring its own original programming to its streaming service. In early October of 2012, Netflix announced that it would be launching a new original series called House of Cards on February 1. The series will be a Netflix exclusive.

The series will have 13 episodes for its first season. We didn’t know much about the TV show at the time it was announced, other than some of the major actors and actresses that would participate. Actors in the show include Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, and Kate Mara. The series is being directed by David Fincher and written by Beau Willimont and Eric Roth.

The show is based on a BBC miniseries that had the same name and is a political drama highlighting greed, love, and corruption in Washington DC. Netflix has now announced its first official trailer for the series to give you a better idea of what the TV show will be like. Netflix also announced another interesting tidbit that people who like the show will really appreciate.

That tidbit is that all 13 episodes will be available to stream whenever you want on February 1. That means if you have the time the day the series premieres to watch all 13 episodes, you can do it. I really like that aspect of Netflix’s original programming, having to wait each week for show you really like can be irritating.

Initial projects from 3net Studios include the world's first native 4K TV show

3net, the joint venture from Sony, Discovery and IMAX that’s a 3D channel and more recently a production studio, is ready to announce its first slate of content. While so far the channel has mainly sourced content from the three partners, the new slate of projects, with one that it says is the world’s first native 4K project for TV. Called Space, it combines 3D and Ultra HD footage to explore the universe. Of course, at $20k~ a pop for Ultra HD TV sets and a lack of anyone broadcasting in the format so far it may be a bit early, but it will probably air in standard HD/3D at first and when the tech catches up, it will be ready. Other shows in the works include Marksmen, a 3D motion comic, documentary Frozen In Time: Our History in 3D, Wingsuit Warrior: Jeb Corliss vs. The World and travelogue series Daydream. Anyone that scrounged for HD in the early 2000s is probably familiar with this type of demo-ready content, and if you’re one of the first with a 4K set, it will probably be in your library for a while before Hollywood is ready to sell you the same movies again, just in higher resolution.

Twitter adds new email sharing option for tweets

For a long time Twitter assumed if you wanted to share a tweet, you would just tweet it to your followers or friends. The problem with that was there still a large number of people out there who aren’t on Twitter that you might want to share with. Twitter has finally announced new a sharing option that will help keep friends not on Twitter in the loop.

If you’re an avid Twitter user who comes across something that you would like to share with a friend who isn’t on Twitter, you can now do that with e-mail sharing. Twitter announced the availability of e-mail sharing yesterday. Before this feature, one of the only ways to share a tweet with someone not on the service was to take a screen shot and e-mail that or post it to another service such as Facebook.

Twitter says access the new e-mail sharing option all you need to do is click the “More” icon next to the reply on the Twitter interface. The e-mail sharing allows you to add your own comment before you share.

The e-mail your friend receives will have your comments and the tweet in one message. The sharing service will allow you to share any tweet, even if it has a photo attached. I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who have been clamoring for an e-mail share option for a long time and it’s finally here.

When Darren Kersey plugged his mobile phone charger into the power supply of a picnic shelter in Gillespie Park, Sarasota, all he wanted was a little boost of his battery level. He certainly didn’t bank on getting arrested and spending the night in a cell. More »
