Qeexo’s FingerSense technology will differentiate between fingertips, fingernails and knuckles on your touchscreen

There are times when our fingers might be dirty and we might have to resort to using our knuckles to interact with our smartphone or tablet. Then there is also the issue with people with long fingernails, or those with fake fingernails who might find it cumbersome to use touchscreen displays, but since touchscreens these days don’t react to fingernails (unless they’re resistive), it could be quite inconvenient for some. Interestingly a company called Qeexo is looking into developing a touchscreen that will be able to distinguish between our fingertips, our fingernails and our knuckles. (more…)

Light by Moore’s Cloud is a color changing light cube

Lately there’ve been a number of LED lights turn up seeking funding to come to market on various crowd-sourced funding sites that allow users to customize the color of the light. Two of the most recent we have talked about have been LED light bulbs that are screwed into normal light sockets. Today another LED color changing light has turned up, but this one isn’t a bulb.

The device is called the Light by Moore’s Cloud, and it’s a small cube filled with 52 different LEDs. The multiple colored LEDs inside the cube allow users to choose from any combination of up to 2 million colors. Users can change the color of the light using an app for smartphones and tablets.

One of the more interesting features of this little cube is that it has integrated Wi-Fi and runs Linux allowing the light to be accessed from anywhere in the world to change the light color. The light can also be color matched to anything you can take a photo of using a smartphone camera.

The developers of the project say that the Light can talk to other devices, including other Lights and pretty much anything else on the Internet thanks to its open software platform. One interesting possibility that opens is being able to touch one Light in your home and have others throughout the house light up as well. Light can also generate animations such as candles, flames, fireworks, or rainbows. A pledge of $99 will get you your own Light. The project is seeking $700,000 and has raised $159,757 with 34 days to go.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 gets Android 4.2 Jelly Bean AOSP port

If you own an Acer Iconia A500 tablet, you’re probably wondering if and when Acer will get around to releasing the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update for your device. Well instead of waiting around for Acer to get a move on things, one XDA developer has decided to take things into his own hands and he has since been working on an Android 4.2 AOSP port for the A500 tablet. So far the port has been a success, although we guess success might not be the best choice of words here. While he did manage to get the port up and running, there are still many features lacking and are not working at the moment, such as the camera, audio, and Bluetooth just to name a few. Of course given the early stages of the port, this is to be expected. While this port might not be for everyone to flash onto their A500 tablets, it is still a good sign that indicates that while an official update may or may not be worked on, an unofficial one is at the very least. We’re not sure when randomblame will be able to get this port finished and up and running, but more details can be found in the XDA forums.

RIM’s CEO believes Blackberry 10 is a “true mobile computing platform”

With a variety of smartphone platforms to choose from, such as iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry and etc., it’s hard to say which one is the best. Each has their own strength and weakness, and each user has their own reasons for going with their preference. At the moment both iOS and Android reign supreme, with either platform owning a fairly sized chunk of the pie, but RIM is hoping to steal some of that pie from iOS and Android with their upcoming Blackberry 10, but the question we’re sure many are asking is that will they be able to?

RIM’s CEO (unsurprisingly) seems to think so, and in a statement, Thorsten Heins was quoted as saying that he believes that iOS is a downsized computer operating system, while Blackberry 10 has been described as a “true mobile computing platform”, a term which is most definitely up to debate. This is a surprising chance on his stance, given that not too long ago he was quoted as saying that he believed Blackberry 10 had a shot at being number 3, which we admit was a pretty modest and realistic goal for the time being. While we have yet to try Blackberry 10 out for ourselves, based on what we’ve heard and read and seen so far, it looks like it might have some promise, but we guess we will wait until next year to find out.

Sony promises topend handset to compete with GS III and iPhone, implies its existing flagship doesn't

Sony Mobile’s sales chief, Dennis van Schie, has gone on the record with a pledge that just about crosses the line from marketing to manifesto. Speaking to the Financial Times Deutschland, he said Sony “will create, in the near future, a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III.” Such a claim doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement of the manufacturer’s existing top-end offering, the fast yet flawed Xperia TL, but it does raise our hopes for CES, since FTD reports that the superphone in question will be presented in early 2013 at both the Las Vegas show and Mobile World Congress. On a related note, van Schie also promised that Sony’s chaotic array of online storefronts would become better integrated by the end of 2013, with every user being able to use a single ID across all their devices to access content — something that sounds simple, but evidently isn’t.

Nintendo Wii finally gets a YouTube app in the US

If you’re a fan of watching streaming video on YouTube from individual users or professionally made content such as movie trailers and TV shows, you probably know that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have had YouTube apps for a long time. If you own the Nintendo Wii, you were out of luck when it came to an official YouTube app. At least you were until this week.

YouTube has announced that its official app for the Nintendo Wii is now available to download in the United States. The official app is designed for big-screen TVs and to be used with the Wii Remote. The app offers the ability to browse through various YouTube videos, and to browse through the channels you enjoy right from your big-screen TV in the living room.

The app is available to download from the Nintendo Wii Shop Channel, and YouTube says that it will be bringing the app to additional countries in the coming months. When users sign into the YouTube app on their Wii, they will find the channels they are subscribed to. Users can also navigate through categories such as gaming, music, training videos, and more.

I’m sure a lot of Wii owners will be very glad this app is now available. Since you can rent movies from YouTube, this would give users yet another streaming option to go along with Netflix. The app also offers an on-screen search to allow you to search for specific videos using the motion control Wii remote.

Nobody Takes Internet-Based Careers Seriously, Still

“You’re a writer? Neat! Wait, on the internet? But that isn’t really a job, right?” Weirdly it still seems like, at least some of the time, people think careers tied up with the internet aren’t real. More »

Android 4.1.2 ROM leaked for Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100)

If you own an international Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100), you might be pleased to know that a leaked Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean ROM has made its way onto the internet, and based on the feedback of those who have flashed it, this build appears to be pretty stable which could be an indication that Samsung could be close to rolling it out to the masses. As expected, this ROM will bring the same features and experience that one might be able to expect from Jelly Bean, which means that users can look forward to Project Butter along with a host of other features. This ROM does contain minor bugs according to some, but then again that’s more or less to be expected. In any case this will require you to know how to flash ROMs onto your phone, so if you are unfamiliar perhaps you should give this a miss until the official update has been rolled out, or you could always go ahead and do your homework before proceeding. The ROM and the flashing instructions can be found here and as always, proceed with caution!

Gold Blackberry 10 SDK will be arriving 11th December

RIM will be officially launching Blackberry 10 on the 30th of January 2013 (be sure to check back with us then for the details!), and they are also expecting to make Blackberry 10 handsets available within 30 days of its launch which is most definitely a good thing. For those wondering about the progress RIM has been making so far, the Canadian company has announced that the gold version of the Blackberry 10 SDK will be made available to developers on the 11th of December. While this is good news for developers, it is also good news for regular folks since it is an indication that everything appears to be right on schedule. The gold version of the SDK will allow developers to finalize their testing and tweaking of their apps before submission and will be able to rest assured knowing that it should have no problems running on the commercial release of Blackberry 10.
