Barnes & Noble reports Q2 2013 earnings digital content sales up 38%, Nook unit rakes $160 million

Barnes & Noble’s Nook unit didn’t have its greatest quarter. The $160 million in revenue the new Microsoft-backed spin off raked in was slightly better than last year’s $152 million, but still a significant drop from $220 million. In a sign of the growing ubiquity of e-readers however, digital content sales were up 38 percent while the units overall revenue was up just 6 percent. Of course the Nook is still losing money, having cut $51 million from the company’s bottom line. If you step outside of the digital realm things are looking slightly better for the book purveyor, as profits were up to $65 million — a 15.6 percent increase over the same time period last year. As we enter the holiday season things should start to look up for B&N and there were good signs during the four day shop-stravaganza from Black Friday to Cyber Monday as sales of Nook hardware doubled from last year. For all the fun financial details hit up the source.

Eric Hartsburg Plans To Remove Tattoo Of Romney On Face

The indignities of losing a presidential race don’t stop on election night.

Since Nov. 6, Mitt Romney has seen his Facebook followers dwindle, and his merchandise land in the discount bin. Now, a professional wrestler with a Romney/Ryan logo facial tattoo is planning to remove it, calling Romney’s post-campaign performance “pretty shameful.”

Eric Hartsburg told Politico the final straw came when the former GOP presidential candidate attributed his loss to President Barack Obama’s “gifts” to minorities.

Angus T. Jones Of ‘Two And A Half Men’ Will ‘Likely’ Be Leaving After Current Season (REPORT)

“Two and a Half Men” fans may have to say goodbye to Jake Harper.

Actor and Evangelical Christian Angus T. Jones’ religious testimony, in which he called the CBS show “filth” and urged viewers to stop watching, left fans wondering whether or not the 19 year old would return for another season of “Two and a Half Men.”

Jones, who has played Jake since the show premiered in 2003, will “likely” leave “Two and a Half Men” after the current season, according to E! News. He plans to finish out Season 10 and then make an exit. “He won’t be in every episode,” a source told E! News of Jones. “How much they use him will be up to [creator] Chuck Lorre. The intention wasn’t ever for him to be in every ep this year anyway. Now it might be less.”

iPhone 5 Receives Network Access License In China

Apple is working hard to gain the approval of selling the iPhone 5 in China. Finally, its efforts are paying off. That’s because the Ministry of Industry and Technology of the People’s Republic of China has just rubber stamped the iPhone 5, granting Apple the proper network verification of the device and the right to sell it in the country. Today’s report is based on a document taken from a regulatory website which reveals an Apple device that’s similar to the iPhone receiving a network access license.

China is considered to be the world’s largest mobile market. Getting the required certification for the iPhone 5 should be on top of Apple’s main priorities. Apple plans to launch two iPhone 5 versions in China – one supporting WCDMA and another for CDMA-2000 network. The said two versions of the iPhone 5 will be going on sale via China Unicom and China Telecom. The iPhone 5 is expected to be available in the country next month.

Stuart Stevens Sticks With Message: Our Ideas ‘Carried The Day’

Mitt Romney adviser Stuart Stevens defended the failed GOP presidential candidate and himself on Thursday, repeating an argument from his Wednesday Washington Post op-ed that the candidate carried the day, but still didn’t win.

That op-ed was met with widespread criticism, in part because of Stevens’ insistence that since Romney won voters who made more than $50,000 per year and won the white vote, he was, in a way, successful.

He told CBS’ “This Morning” that he was “not at all” saying the race was divided into support from the haves and the have-nots. He also defended Romney’s claims post-election that Obama won because of “gifts” to base constituencies, such as women and Latinos.

Yoshi’s Island Wii U Listed

It was not too long ago that the Nintendo Wii U was released, and here we are with word that Yoshi’s Island Wii U is going to make its way to the latest Nintendo console. Still, this unannounced Wii U title was apparently dismissed by Nintendo in a flash, claiming that the debug menu which showed up the Yoshi’s Island Wii U was just a “mockup”, and needless to say, of no important consequence. However, online retail listings on Best Buy and Future Shop do seem to point out otherwise, making references to the Yoshi’s Island Wii U title. Guess Nintendo was not all that truthful, and Yoshi’s Island Wii U was even listed as a full-scale title with HD graphics.

Best Buy said, “Take Yoshi on an epic adventure to remember in Yoshi Land for Nintendo Wii U. Check out Yoshi as you’ve never seen him before: in glorious high definition. Enjoy dual-screen control thanks to the Wii U Touchscreen GamePad, while you’ll also be able to experience full integration with Nintendo’s MiiVerse service.”

Guess Yoshi’s Island Wii U will eventually end up as a full retail game instead of being a downloadable title, and neither will be it a rehash of old Yoshi’s Island games. Whoop-de-doo, perhaps?

A 3-D Optogenetics Chip Developed At The MIT Media Lab Promises Better Control Of The Brain

Optogenetics, which pairs light-sensitive genes with a light source to selectively switch brain cells on or off, has shown promise as a research tool and a potential therapy. But the technology mostly delivers light to one spot, whereas brain activity usually involves complex sequences of activation in different locations. A new device takes optogenetics into three dimensions, with the ability to send patterns of light to neurons at various coördinates in the brain.

Verizon lauded by Consumer Reports: Only LTE earns AT&T approval

Verizon’s cellphone service has come out top of the pack for major US carriers, with sterling 4G performance the only thing to rescue AT&T from poor ratings across the board. Based on a survey of more than 63,000 subscribers by Consumer Reports, the feedback praised Verizon for its voice and data quality, the knowledge of staff, and how promptly issues were resolved.

In contrast, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint were all given “middling to low marks” in those categories, with voice and text service judged to be particularly disappointing.

However, while Verizon may have got to LTE first, it isn’t deemed the best 4G offering of all the networks. “[AT&T] users reported the fewest problems with that higher-speed service, which most new smart phones now use” Consumer Reports concludes.

It’s prepaid service which gets the biggest nod, however, with Consumer Reports recommending several no-frills and/or regional providers for the individual or family that wants the most for their dollar. US Cellular takes the top recommendation, with Credo Mobile in second place; if you’re not in the coverage of either, Verizon is in third place.

In fact, the organization found, the majority of those who jumped from contract to prepaid made a monthly saving. Two-thirds saved more than $20 per month, helping offset the higher upfront cost of the device.
