Dream Act-Lite Plan Circulating Among Republicans: Report

Republican senators are working on a Dream Act-style bill called the ACHIEVE Act to give legal status to some undocumented young people, the Daily Caller’s Matt K. Lewis reported Thursday.

The GOP plan would be a watered-down version of the decade-old Dream Act initially put forward by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). The Dream Act was never able to get through both chambers of Congress, and most recently failed in the Senate in 2010. With renewed interest on immigration reform, there is an effort to come to some sort of bipartisan solution, and the ACHIEVE Act is reportedly a plan being floated to do so.

The ACHIEVE Act would allow some undocumented immigrants to attend college or serve in the military under a W-1 visa, Lewis reported. They could then apply for another four-year visa to work or do further studies, and then apply for permanent residence without welfare benefits. Citizenship “could follow,” according to the details posted.

Jimmy John’s CEO, Obamacare Opponent, Donated To Swanky Private Health Clinic

A CEO who has publicly railed against the cost of providing health insurance to his employees has donated tens of thousands of dollars to a private health care clinic in his Florida community.

In an interview with Fox News host Neil Cavuto last month (see above), Jimmy John Liautaud detailed his plans to reduce workers’ hours in order to avoid the Affordable Care Act’s requirement to provide health coverage or pay a penalty.

Liautaud, who owns the Jimmy John’s national sandwich chain, is listed as a “Super Founder” for the medical center at Key Largo’s ritzy Ocean Reef Club. The club’s website describes it as one of America’s most exclusive club communities. Amenities include 54 holes of golf, a 175-slip marina, a private airport and its own school, which members’ children can attend seasonally. In 2011, Liautaud paid $4 million for a home at the Ocean Reef Club, according to a local business journal.

Padma Lakshmi doesn’t watch “Top Chef.” Just add her to the growing list of TV stars who don’t tune in to their own shows.

In the new issue of “Playboy,” Lakshmi said TV food personalities aren’t interesting to her.

“Bobby Flay, I’m sure, is a great guy, but I don’t watch ‘Iron Chef.’ I don’t even watch ‘Top Chef,’ to be honest,” she said.

Fighting Off Age At The Pharmacy Counter

We wrinkle. We have night sweats. We forget names and wake, with brittle, unwanted consciousness, in the middle of the night.

And we hate those indignities of aging — including those that extend to the bedroom — and mobilize to fight them using the tools of modern medicine.

As a consequence, sales of medications that target symptoms of normal aging are soaring, according to data recently released at the American Public Health Association’s annual meeting.

Firefox browser add-on lets us try Firefox OS in an all-Mozilla universe

Firefox browser addon lets us try Firefox OS in a very recursive way

We’ve had the chance to experiment with early versions of Firefox OS for awhile — just not in Firefox the browser, where you’d nearly expect it to have shown first. At least one person appreciates that seemingly natural fit. A new Firefox OS simulator add-on, r2d2b2g, lets us try Mozilla’s upcoming mobile platform from within the company’s own browser for everything that doesn’t depend on native hardware, including the browser and Firefox Marketplace. The goal is ostensibly to let developers test truly optimized web apps, although the simulator is also a good excuse for the curious to try Firefox OS without the hassle of a dedicated client or a real smartphone. If you can get by the early state of the simulator and the Xzibit jokes that come with putting Firefox on your Firefox, the extension is already providing a glimpse of a web-focused mobile future to Linux, Mac and Windows users at the source below.

The Gilded Age: Lesser Figures Of The Enlightenment

Jean-David Mansuer and Pierre Pluteau

The individual contributions of these French economists are considered marginal, yet they are remembered because of a single incident in 1801. When Pluteau arrived at his favorite restaurant to find Mansuer seated at his regular table, he became enraged, even though several other tables were available. After a lengthy philosophical argument the men fought a duel on the muddy banks of the Seine. Both drowned. A community council was convened to prevent future needless deaths, and today Mansuer and Pluteau are jointly credited with the notion of call-ahead reservations.

This Is What a Shrink-Wrapped Space Shuttle Looks Like

I’ve seen the space shuttle in every possible way and angle. Even at the launch pad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. But I’ve never seen it completely shrink-wrapped, as if someone just ordered one from Amazon. More »

Anonymous Attacks Israeli Websites To Show Gaza Support In Conflict

As Israel and Hamas continued their deadly conflict in Gaza Thursday, the hacker group Anonymous rallied to the Palestinians’ side, launching a digital attack against websites belonging to the Israeli government.

Beginning early Thursday morning, the hacker group announced a mission to crash and deface websites belonging to the Israeli Defense Forces, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and other Israeli websites belonging to security and financial corporations, according to Global Post.

On Twitter, an account linked to Anonymous called on followers to bring down more than 40 websites belonging to the Israeli government and military. The group is known for launching so-called “denial of service” attacks that overwhelm websites with traffic, causing them to crash.
