Spotify confirms web app in the works, currently in closed beta (updated)

Spotify confirms web app in the works, currently in closed beta updated

There have been rumblings that Spotify would unveil a browser-based client. Well, the company has just confirmed to us that such a service is not only in the works, but is currently in beta testing. The trial version is being rolled out slowly to users over the coming weeks and months, though it may be sometime before the general public is granted access. The statement we received didn’t specify an official launch date, the company simply said it “will have more information in Q1 of next year.” We weren’t able to squeeze too many details out of the spokesperson but, according to a report from The Verge, there is a basic set of features that mirrors what you see in the desktop app. That means a what’s new section, simple search and Spotify Radio, though no support for apps at the moment. Now you’ll just have to cross your fingers that you’ll be one of the lucky few granted testing privileges sooner, rather than later.

Update: As you can see, a lovely reader sent us in a screenshot of the web app and it seems to be designed with fingers in mind. There’s big icons, sliding panes (three of ’em in total) and easily tapped buttons. You can see the full width shot — including the large, mostly blank control pane — in the gallery below.

Update 2: And thanks to one Thomas Kjemperud anyone can now gain access by using this link which activates the beta through your Facebook account. Enjoy!

White Humpback Whale Spotted Near Norway (VIDEO)

It’s like “Moby Dick” in real life. A rare white humpback whale has been sighted off the coast of Norway.

British maritime engineer Dan Fisher, 32, spotted the humpback whale while on a boat trip to Svalbard, Norway, and snapped photos from the ship’s mast. The pictures were later published in The Daily Mail.

The short video above shows the white whale in the company of its pigmented peers. The whale surfaces, blows a spout and then dives under the water again.

Voters Found 2012 Election ‘Frustrating,’ According To Pew Poll

Voters are more than happy to see the end of the 2012 campaign, increasingly worried about the accuracy of elections, and somewhat doubtful about the prospects of bipartisanship in Washington, according to a Pew Research Center poll released Thursday afternoon.

The poll, which followed up with voters Pew had previously interviewed before the election, sheds some light on voters’ retrospective opinions of the campaign, as well as the contours of Mitt Romney’s loss, and on both parties’ expectations moving forward.

Voters are unlikely to look back fondly on the 2012 election. About half of those polled said this year’s election included less discussion of issues than past elections, and 68 percent said negative campaigning and mudslinging were both more prominent than usual.

Nexus 4 on backorder for 3 weeks

Google’s latest Nexus devices, the Nexus 4 smartphone and the Nexus 10 tablet, are proving to be hot items. We knew that the Nexus 4 sold out within a half-hour of being released on Tuesday, and that the Nexus 10 sold out shortly afterward. Today, we just received an email saying that the Nexus 4 has been put on backorder for three weeks.

Frankly, we’re not surprised by this, but it appears that Google actually oversold the Nexus 4, meaning that those who ordered one and were given a delivery date of just a few days away are now being sent emails that say their shipment has been delayed. However, Google notes that many people who purchased the device in the first several minutes of it being available will receive their unit on time.

“Thank you for your recent purchase on Google Play. Due to overwhelming demand, your Nexus 4 is on backorder and is expected to ship within three weeks. We’ll send you a notification when your order has shipped and will credit the shipping charges.”

It’s disappointing indeed, especially if you were originally told a delivery date of just a few days from now, but that’s the nature of the beast when it comes to hot items. For those who were able to be some of the first ones through the door, consider yourselves the lucky ones. The not-so-lucky ones get to wait a whole three weeks before they get to enjoy some Nexus love.

The Nexus 4 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 2GB of RAM and either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage. There’s also an 8MP rear camera with a 1.3MP front-facing shooter. The screen is a 4.7-inch WXGA IPS display covered in Gorilla Glass 2. The phone sells for $299 unlocked for the 8GB option, and $349 for the 16GB option.

Gift Guide: The iPad Mini

giftguide12-ipad-mini

Short Version

This is the iPad mini you’ve no doubt heard about. The one Apple introduced in October, the one that reviewers have mostly loved, and the one that’s been my constant companion since I got one on launch day. You may know it as the iPad mini, but for all intents and purposes, this is the new iPad.

Long Version

Features:

  • Thin and light design
  • Same huge library of 250,000+ iPad apps
  • Battery life that easily stretches into the 12 hour range

Info:

The iPad mini is…

… the best iPad. And maybe the best Apple product in recent memory. That may sound hyperbolic, and you can retort with complaints about screen resolution all you like, but as someone very well-versed in buying and using Apple products over the past 10 years, I can safely say at this point that the iPad mini is the one I’d be least inclined to give up.

Buy the iPad mini for…

… anyone who loves their existing iPad but wishes it were more portable, people new to tablets who want an easy and pleasant first experience, those who’ve tablets from other manufacturers but were disappointed and subsequently discarded them. The LTE version is likely best for frequent travelers, but the Wi-Fi model will be ideal for homebodies and people who generally split their time between two, Wi-Fi equipped locations, like home and school.

Because…

… there’s nothing quite like the full iPad experience in a package that you can hold with one hand. Critics will say this isn’t a wise purchase because Apple will inevitably introduce a Retina display to the iPad mini line. That’s likely true, but all the use you or your loved one will get out of this generation of iPad mini make it more than worthwhile to pull the trigger now, and the difference between this screen and that of the 4th generation iPad is a non-issue after just a few minutes of use. This is a gadget gift that won’t end up resting in anyone’s closet, or living exclusively on the nightstand, and it’s rare you can say that about any device.

Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender to Star in Video Game Inspired Movies

Let’s be honest, Hollywood doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to adapting video game properties to movies. I’m looking directly at you Dwayne Johnson and that sorry excuse for a Doom movie. Now we have a couple more video game movies set to go into production starring some big names.

video game movies

Reports are indicating that Tom Hardy, the dude who played Bane in the The Dark Knight Rises, will play Sam Fisher, the trident-goggle-wearing protagonist from the Splinter Cell series of video games and books. While Splinter Cell is coming to movie theaters is cool enough, Michael Fassbender has reportedly signed up to star in a movie adaption of the Assassin’s Creed video game.

Fassbender will be best known by geeks all around the world for his turn as Magneto in X-Men: First Class. Fassbender also played a slightly insane, but awesome cyborg in Prometheus. Here’s hoping both of these video game movie adaptations turn out much better than Doom. Or Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Or Tomb Raider. Or Final Fantasy. Or Prince of Persia. Or Super Mario Bros.
