In some senses, we’ve been waiting for this moment since last May: Verizon is back to selling brand-new Windows Phone hardware. Starting today, the carrier is offering both the $200 HTC Windows Phone 8X as its flagship and the $100 Nokia Lumia 822 for the more cost-conscious. Both Windows Phone 8 devices have a slight spin on the stock formula. Verizon’s 8X is currently the only variant of the phone that supports wireless charging, if you’re in the position of choosing between Big Red’s network and AT&T’s; the Lumia 822’s differences are more cosmetic, but they may appeal to those who aren’t fans of the boxier 810 and 820. The only immediate caveat is a very monochromatic selection that won’t improve until the blue and red 8X editions start shipping from next week onwards.
Today, Olympus officially announced the M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 lens. The new lens is designed for street photographers, and is a fast and moderate 17mm wide-angle lens for the Micro Four Thirds system that features a maximum aperture of f/1.8, as well as depth-of-field and distance indicators. The aperture and focal length make it a great option for street, landscape, or low-light photography.
The lens is constructed mostly from metal parts and features the same Snapsnot Focus mechanism with a distance indicator as already seen on the premium 12mm lens, which allows for easy pan focusing with the built-in distance indicator. Extra-low reflection optical coatings were also applied to the lens to help reduce lens flare and ghosting, even when shooting against the light.
The focus ring on the new lens can be used to quickly snap between manual- and auto-focus modes, and sliding the ring back reveals range markings on the lens barrel that include distance and depth-of-field scales, which act as useful guides when optimizing the focal distance. There’s also a high Refractive index lens to help reduce aberrations.
The lens measures less than two inches long, which makes it compact and easy to carry around. The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.8 lens will be priced at around $500, and should be available sometime next month. A release date and price in the UK is still yet to be determined by Olympus.

For those who have taken the time and trouble to make use of Google’s voice search tool, if you were to look at it in a fair and objective manner despite owning all sorts of Apple devices at home, would have to (grudgingly perhaps?) admit that it works far better than what Siri offers. Well, Google themselves have integrated Google TV functionality into its voice search tool, with some rather futuristic results to boot. The setup is not as simple as that of talking to an omniscient computer as though aboard the USS Enterprise though. Just how does it work? Speaking into the remote and saying “CNN” will send CNN to your TV, while ordering streaming TV shows is a simple matter of speaking into the remote.
Should you be unable to remember the name of a particular show, you are able to provide a short description of things, where it will deliver accurate suggestions. Apart from searching for and playing TV channels as well as streaming videos, the voice search also works equally well for locating videos on YouTube. The new voice search capability can be found on the LG Smart TV (G2 Series), the VIZIO Co-Star, and the Sony Internet Player (NSZ-GS7).
Apple’s high-quality and costly products are often tagged as luxury devices by some. Because of that, thieves are now eyeing on iPhones and iPads as a lucrative option. According to the New York Post, two thieves stole iPad minis reported to be worth $1.5 million in a cargo building at the JFK airport in New York. The pair reportedly sneaked inside the airport before midnight on Monday and used forklifts to load two pallets of iPad minis into a truck.
The crime was eventually stopped when an airport worker decided to interfere and began challenging the suspicious duo. This forced the thieves to abandon the plan, leaving behind three more pallets of iPad minis. Investigators say that it was probably an inside job. Around 3,600 iPad minis were stolen. According to the report, the tablets were shipped by a company called Cargo Airport Services. Sources say that iPads came from China and were expected to be distributed at stores around the U.S.
Don’t worry, you won’t wake up tomorrow suddenly only to find out that you are “The One” in a Matrix-like environment, even though we have word that there is a new experiment in town that turns the inner ear of guinea pigs into a biological battery. Word has it that electrodes that have been implanted within the guinea pigs’ inner ears do seem to bear a strong resemblance to that of humans, where it managed to power the attached radio transmitters. To think that this happened without the guinea pigs suffering from any form of major hearing loss, perhaps such similar medical sensors that are implanted in human inner ears could be the path of the future?
Anantha Chandrakasan, an electrical engineer and computer scientist at MIT, said, “It will allow us to develop fully implanted electronics (e.g., inner ear sensors that have a wireless chip) without the need for a traditional battery. The system will be self-sustaining.” I don’t suppose that if you were to be more active, none of the extra kinetic energy collected will contribute to the net energy count?
Everyone has their own unique set of fingerprints, and this is more often than not traced when it comes to crime investigations. What other use do you have for your fingerprints? Well, apart from biometric payment systems, similar technology is being utilized at a hotel so that it will update one’s Facebook profiles automatically, after recognizing the particular guests’ fingerprints. The company who owns the hotel wants to install touchscreens throughout the hotel, where users will be presented with a selection of actions that will appear on their respective Facebook profiles.
Reports say that guests can access their own account quickly simply by placing their finger on a biometric sensor instead of typing a password. From there, one is able to capture a photo, update one’s current location to brag to their family and friends, as well as the hotel event that one is attending there and then. This system will launch sometime next year, and when that happens, you can do away with the RFID-enabled wristbands.
It’s less than 59 days away – thats what Chevrolet wants you to be pumped up about when it comes to their next beastly beauty in the 2014 Corvette viral campaign. The video you’re about to see shows “CONCEPTION” as far as exterior form and function go – some lovely circle patterns covering a vehicle you’ll not see the whole of perhaps for weeks. The creators of this vehicle want one thing, that’s for certain: to make you anticipate with great glee the oncoming next generation.
This vehicle is one that Chevrolet says will change everything, and, “with transformational advancements in design, engineering, and technology, the driving experience will never be the same.” Sounds pretty fabulous. The video will show you some tiny glimpses of what’s possible with the next-generation Corvette and has a very short quote from none other than the vehicle’s exterior design manager.
“Performance cars are definitely about form follows function. But I would say: beautiful form follows performance-driven function.” – Kirk Bennion, Exterior Design Manager
Below you’ll see a gallery of screen-grabs taken from the video you see above. You’ll get some definite clues as to what this vehicle will look like, some lovely patterning action, and some conceptual drawings to boot. As a bit of a bonus, you’ll also get two gigantic (3000 x 1689 pixel) images taken from the design floor focusing on airflow.
We’ll be keeping our eye on this next-level beast until it’s out on the market without a doubt. Today we’ll leave you with one more quote from Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer for this project.
“The all-new Corvette integrates more high-performance aerodynamic features than ever before, many taken directly from Corvette Racing. For example, the front grill and radiator flow paths reduce lift, improving vehicle stability at high speeds by keeping the car pressed to the pavement. In addition, functional vents increase track capability by channeling air to the brakes, as well as heat exchangers for the transmission and differential.” – Juechter
Let us know what you think you see and what you’re hoping to see in the comments below! Also be sure to tip us off if you’ve got any sweet insight on this monster in the weeks to come!
Jailbreaking your iPhone is not something that Apple looks upon kindly, but then again, it does offer a whole new world of options when it comes to using your iPhone with other apps that were not previously approved by Apple on the App Store, although it delivers far more flexibility than what is currently on the App Store. Chronic Dev developer planetbeing did share an image on his white iPhone 5 that is said to be on its way to be jailbroken, and if you have the necessary eagle eyes, there seems to be an abundance of unauthorized widgets located in the pull-down notification bar.
Right now, planetbeing claims that the entire jailbreaking “puzzle” is still being put together, as Apple did not make life easy for developers who want to jailbreak the device. At least some progress is better than no progress, don’t you agree? planetbeing said, “I would characterize it more as finding the missing pieces rather than debugging at this stage. Typically the messiest part of the jailbreak process has been installing it in the first place… We’re further along than WWJC. But again, I can’t give any specifics. The jailbreak itself is stable but we’re missing needed exploits. I can’t discuss what we’re missing.”
Dish has edged one step closer to its distant goal of having a 4G LTE network to call its own, receiving approval for its AWS-4 (40MHz) wireless spectrum standards by the 3GPP group. Dish used the announcement to air a few issues, including sending a plea to the FCC to get a move on and officially green light the frequency for use. The would-be wireless provider also sounded off on Sprint, which is asking the FCC to crop some of Dish’s spectrum and add it to the H Block, making it a more attractive acquisition when auctioned off. If the FCC were to grant Sprint’s request, Dish wouldn’t just lose airwaves, but the slow approval process would start anew with altered specifications. Unfortunately for the satellite TV outfit, Sprint is far from the only potential competitor trying to delay Dish’s network — in fact, none seem particularly willing to welcome the new guy without some serious hazing.
