Hyundai shows off Veloster C3 concept

Hyundai has unveiled a new concept car at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The car is called the Veloster C3 Concept and it’s sort of a convertible. I say it’s sort of a convertible because it maintains its fixed roofline and only the center section of the car’s roof opens in a manner similar to what Fiat does with the new 500 Abarth Cabriolet.

One of the more interesting aspects of the cars semi-convertible manner is that it also has a tailgate in the back allowing you to carry bulkier items if you push the convertible top forward. As you can see in the photograph, the car is carrying a similarly colored bicycle in the trunk area. Hyundai calls this particular open tailgate set up recreation mode.

The concept car features a special white paint job, minty green wheels in the back, black wheels in the front, and red touches. The floor the vehicle is covered in a mosaic of old skateboard decks. The engine the concept car is the 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder producing 201 hp.

I can’t say that I’m exactly the target market for the Veloster, but in general, I like the design of the car. I’m definitely not feeling the different colored wheels on this concept or the red interior matched with the colors on the outside of the car. There is no indication at this time if Hyundai will produce a version of the Veloster with this sort of convertible top.

The iPhone 5 Clears Its Final Regulatory Hurdle For Launch In China

apple china shanghai

Things seem to be on track for the iPhone 5 to meet its December release timeline in Greater China, since the device has now received approval for the final piece in the regulatory puzzle required for it to go on sale. The Wall Street Journal reports that it has now obtained its “network access” license, and the notice mentions China Telecom by name, though not a version of the phone that would work with China Unicom.

China Telecom backed up the timeline proposed by Apple CEO Tim Cook during a conference call earlier this month, saying at an event that the phone would arrive on its network by early December at the latest. At the time, China Unicom did indeed express skepticism about when exactly the phone would be hitting its network, suggesting it was all in the hands of regulators at that point. If China Telecom has an exclusive head start on iPhone 5, it could attract away some subscribers hungry for the device.

People are interested in watching the iPhone 5′s progress in China because there’s a feeling that the company would be better served by getting its devices to market in that country as quickly as possible among analysts. Rival devices from Android handset makers are said to be growing in market share, according to recent info from Gartner, as consumers wait on the iPhone (or give up waiting) in order to get the latest model.

Generally, devices go on sale in China within a few weeks of receiving this final regulatory approval. Apple may do its best to hasten the device out the door, however, but that could depend on its manufacturing capacity. A big reason why it often waits so long to enter China is ensuring it has sufficient stock to cover other markets first: shortages meant the wait for iPhone 5 in its original markets was long until very recently, with shipping times recently improving to just one week in the U.S.

Need a New Knee? Print One

While modern medical technology has not reached the stage where one is able to get a robotic prosthetics in the same vein as that of Anakin Skywalker when he received a lesson in lightsaber dueling against Count Dooku, we have arrived at the edge of the doorstep, where one might be able to print 3D cartilage constructs as and when required. This is what a bunch of researchers over at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine have demonstrated recently using a novel bioprinter that relies on a couple of low-cost fabrication techniques so that it can deliver a structure which is not only durable but biologically active.

An electrospinning machine will rely on an electrical current to generate the kind of extremely fine fibers required from a polymer, resulting in a strong and porous structure. Following that, a common inkjet printer will deposit layers of natural gel, while a solution of cartilage cells is also put into the structure. You end up with a hybrid synthetic and natural cartilage construct which does seem to resemble that of actual cartilage after eight weeks of implantation in mice under earlier experiments. Hopefully, humans will be next without any devious side effects.

iPhone 5 gets Chinese network license, expected to go on sale by mid-December

iPhone 5 gets MIIT network license, Chinese passport

The Ministry of Industry and Technology of the People’s Republic of China has rubber-stamped Apple’s iPhone 5 as being suitable for sale in the country. It’s the last of several regulatory hurdles the handset has had to leap through, and is expected to be on sale by Mid-December. The filings reveal that both a WCDMA and CDMA-2000 edition have been approved, confirming reports that it’ll be available on both China Unicom and China Telecom. Presumably Tim Cook and chums didn’t fancy building a TD-SCDMA version just for China Mobile, but don’t worry folks — Stephen Elop’s got your back.

New convertible VW Beetle debuts in LA

Volkswagen is on hand at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show and has unveiled the third-generation Beetle Convertible. The new Beetle Convertible shares much of the same design as the new third-generation Beetle Coupe with a wider, longer, and sleeker design. The new design is an attempt by Volkswagen to attract more male buyers to a vehicle more popular with women.

At the show Volkswagen showed off three special edition Beetle Convertible models, including one called 50s that is black on the outside, and tan on the inside. A version called 60s has two-tone seats and denim blue paint. The final special version was called 70s and was toffee brown on the outside with chrome disc wheels.

The special editions are more than just car show eye candy and will all be available when the new Beetle Convertible goes on sale next month. The vehicle will start at $25,790. The Beetle Convertible is available with a black or brown top and the top goes down in 9.5 seconds using power assist. The top to be operated at speeds of up to 31 mph.

The Beetle Convertible will be offered with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission for base models. Optional engines will include a two-liter turbo four and a two-liter diesel promising 41 mpg. The optional engines can be paired with a six-speed manual or a DSG transmissions.

Ubisoft’s new survey could clue us in on what to expect in the next Assassin’s Creed title

With Assassin’s Creed 3 having been released not too long ago, we guess it’s not surprising that Ubisoft is already planning its sequel and in a recent survey sent out to some of their customers, a rather interesting feature may or may not make its way into the next Assassin’s Creed title. According to the survey, Ubisoft probed its customers and asked if a co-op mode would be favored by players. Basically it asked if players were open to the idea of their friends being able to join them in a solo play mode and help them out with a mission. It sounds like a pretty good idea and to be honest, playing games with friends certainly makes it much more entertaining, so personally I would welcome such a feature, but what do you guys think? Ubisoft also asked how gamers would feel if they were to release the game next year. We get where they’re coming from – if titles are released too frequently, some gamers might be worried that quality could be lacking and that its developers are simply looking for a quick way to make some money.

All 6 Tomb Raider titles now available on Steam

As most Tomb Raider fans are probably aware by now, the franchise will be getting a reboot come 2013, and for gamers who want to relive the good old days before moving on, or for gamers who are wondering what the fuss behind Tomb Raider is all about, the good news is that Square Enix has announced via their blog that all previous six Tomb Raider games will be available for purchase and download via Steam! Given that the original Tomb Raider is such an old game, trying to find it at your local gaming store might be a bit tricky, so by putting it on Steam it will make the lives of some gamers a bit more convenient. Each Tomb Raider title on Steam will be retailing for $9.99 each, which means you will need to drop close to $60 for all 6 which doesn’t seem like a bad deal. So, anyone looking to relive the glory days?

Google’s Bradley Horowitz does not appear to be a fan of Facebook’s advertising

When it comes to the social networking space, there are a number of major players, such as Facebook, Twitter and recently Google+, albeit the latter does not have quite the same amount of clout as the former two. That being said, it seems that Google’s Bradley Horowitz in an interview with Business Insider was quoted as calling Facebook a “social network of the past”, and pointed out that the way Facebook introduced their ads was annoying and frustrating both users and the brands that are being advertised. He then goes on to claim that Google’s approach to social networking is more holistic and that instead of invading our news stream, social ads will show up in regular search results.

He also likened Facebook’s ads to a sandwich board who interrupts an intimate conversation between a man and his daughter. It’s not surprising that Google thinks that they can do better than Facebook, but with 100 million active users versus Facebook’s 1 billion, we think that they still have a long way to go, but at the same time do you agree with Horowitz’s sentiments on the way Facebook handles their ads?

This cutting board comes with a built-in iPad stand

Perhaps you’re trying to learn new knife techniques, or you’re trying to follow a recipe using your iPad, and unless the casing of your iPad comes with a stand, propping your iPad up could be rather tricky. Granted you could stick something behind it but that’s not the most elegant or permanent solution, but the folks at Chef Sleeve may have something for you in the form of the Cutting Board with iPad Stand. As you can imagine from the name, and image above, this is basically your run of the mill cutting board with a built-in groove that lets you prop your iPad up!

We haven’t actually used it for ourselves so we’re not sure how effective it will be at holding the iPad up, but for now it looks like a pretty novel and convenient solution. Of course we expect that you will need more protection if you hope to prevent your iPad from getting splashed from whatever  juices that comes out of the meat, fruit or vegetable you’re preparing, but if you’re in the market for a new cutting board and wouldn’t mind a built-in iPad stand in the process, it will be available via Chef Sleeve for $70.

HTC appoints new marketing chief, hopes to usher in a new era of brand awareness

If you have been following the news, you might have noticed that HTC isn’t doing as well as they would like, losing some of their market share to their competitor, namely Samsung. While the company might have attempted to rebrand itself this year with the launch of the HTC “One” series of handsets, we guess based on everything that has happened so far, it just wasn’t enough, to the point where HTC has announced that they will be appointing a new marketing chief. Benjamin Ho is expected to replace the current marketing chief, John Wang, whom together with HTC’s CEO Pete Chou, are expected to lead HTC into their “next phase of brand marketing and awareness”. We’re not sure what this could mean for HTC, but if you’ve been a fan of HTC but weren’t really impressed with the company’s offerings this year and think that they could have done better, hopefully 2013 will be better for the Taiwanese company.
