Visualized Qualcomm's patent wall

Just like how a rock star would hang all of his or her vinyl records on the wall, Qualcomm has a dedicated “Patent Wall” at its San Diego headquarters to show off 1,395 of its patent files. But that’s just a fraction of the 13,000-something patents owned by the company, of course. Sadly, we weren’t allowed to take photos of Paul Jacobs’ pool of gold coins behind that wall.

New Hypercars Get Even More Horsepower

Just when you thought that having 1,000 horses underneath the hood in the Bugatti Veyron was the epitome of vehicle engineering, that just proved the start to the 2,000 horsepower mark. In the coming year ahead, Koenigsegg and Hennessy will roll out new versions of their Agera R and Venom GT respectively, and you can expect the performance of both to blow the mind away. The Hennessy Venom GT2 has its official details released to date, projecting a possible top speed of 287 mph, which is far more speed than the average driver (and road) is able to handle.

As for the Agera R from Koenigsegg, it tips the scales at a massive 2,932 pounds, and mathematicians would be quick to whip out their calculators, touting that if it were to have a 1:1 ratio, that would mean carrying a cool 1,329 horsepower under the hood to match it’s weight in kilograms (1,329kg). Christian Von Koenigsegg says that the One:1, however, is to be “slightly lighter than the Agera R”, with a power range that will be “somewhere between 1250hp and 1350hp.” I shudder at the thought of its price.

Researchers create objects from moon rock using 3D printer

Imagine a future where individuals stationed on the moon will be able to scoop up a bunch of moon rock, pour it into a machine, and print out an object they need. Such was an idea presented by Washington State University researchers, who used imitation moon rock in combination with a 3D printer to create objects. While it still has a long way to go, they successfully created three cylinders.

WSU researcher Amit Bandyopadhyay and his fellow colleagues utilized a synthetic form of regolith, which is more commonly known as moon rock, in the experiment. The regolith was added to the 3D printer, where it was melted and used to create the cylinders featured above. This could eventually be used to create needed parts or to perform repairs on the lunar landscape.

Said Bandyopadhyay in an interview with NBC News: “The other option is we can actually weld a joint using local material. You may have a good-looking piece in your hand but good for nothing in terms of properties, or you can print something so that it can be functionally useful.” You can hear the rest of what he has to say in the video above.

Although for now the idea is little more than a future-minded concept, it could one day prove essential for colonies on the moon. Whereas having materials on-hand for needed objects and repairs would be both incredibly expensive and impractical, moon rock is as plentiful as sand on the beach. By eliminating the need for materials, wait times for material shipments would be a non-issue, and repairs could be made ASAP.

HyTAQ Flying Robot

You cannot deny it, but a name like HyTAQ (Hybrid Terrestrial and Aerial Quadrotor), which also ties in nicely as being “high tech”, is irresistable to name your robot, right? A team over at the Robotics Lab at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) developed the HyTAQ, where it has a cylindrical outer protective cage, which is attached to the quadrotor using a shaft connected by a couple of rotating joints, which allows the HyTAQ to fly or roll over the ground, as and when the need arises.

The quadrotors will deliver the thrust required for aerial and terrestrial locomotion, and there is no need for further actuators which would be counter productive, as the weight of the entire system would be increased. When the HyTAQ is on the ground, the rolling cage would mean the robot needs to overcome just rolling resistance to move forward, and it will jump over an obstacle that it finds difficult to roll over. This is far more energy efficient, and in an aerial-only travel test, its battery lasted five minutes while moving 1,969 ft (600 m), although when rolling over a smooth surface, it was able to last for 27 minutes, traveling a distance of 7,874 ft (2,400 m).

Fasotec Prints Pre-birth 3D Baby Models

You can say that majority of the parents out there are proud of their progeny, and do not mind showing off photos of their newborns. What happens when one is able to make use of today’s technology and capture a 3D image of an unborn child? Well, I guess that means the bragging will only happen earlier, and Fasotec of Japan has come up with a new kind of technology that delivers pre-birth 3D models of their babies. This service is being offered by the Hiroo Ladies clinic in Tokyo, where the process will require taking in ultrasound scans of a pregnant woman’s abdomen, while printing it out in a 3D model which parents are able to keep as a souvenir.

The process is known as Bio-Texture Modeling, and Fasotec also has a service which relies on CT and MRI scans so that customers are able to enjoy 3D printouts of their internal organs and skeletons. You would need to fork out a rather hefty $1,250 to take advantage of the Bio-Texture Modeling process for your next generation though.

LG and Verizon team up to provide 75 channels for Smart TV owners

Verizon and LG have teamed up to eradicate set-top boxes with the magic that is the Smart TV. Now Verizon FiOS customers can watch 75 broadcast channels on their Smart TV in addition to the provider’s Flex View service, which provides access to over 25,000 on-demand shows. Both a FiOS Internet and TV subscription is required, however.

Some of the channels offered by the service include HBO, TBS, VH1, the NFL Network, and the Food Network. Those who also have access to Flex View will have the added ability to buy or rent from a library of thousands of movies and TV shows. Flex View can be used from a mobile device or PC in addition to the Smart TV.

Vice President of Samsung’s Smart TV and Innovation Samuel Chang offered this statement. “The expansive selection of channels from FiOS TV and on-demand content from Verizon’s Flex View library further strengthens LG’s Smart TV platform, giving consumers of all ages a virtually limitless amount of entertainment on TVs, Blu-ray players, PCs, even tablets and phones. As we see more and more consumers adopting the multi-screen universe, LG continues to seek content and alliances that broaden our Smart TV offerings to provide the best experience on whichever device consumers choose to use.”

Security controls are available, allowing parents to limit what their children have access to. The FiOS app is available for all 2012 LG Smart TVs, which include models LM9600/8600/7600/6700/6200, LS5700, PM9700/6700/4700, as well as the BP620 Blu-ray player. Users can download the application via the LG Smart TV Smart World service.

Super Guitar Licks Rock Star Jacket Lights Up Any Concert

A rock concert is nothing if there are no crazy costumes, loud music, a banging performance and fantastic tunes and riffs, although you are always more than welcome to leave out the bat biting finale. Well, the only way you can get away from wearing strange looking costumes and yet pass off as being perfectly normal or even cool, would be in a music video, or in a concert as a celebrity. Fashion designer Christian Joy might be on to something here, as she is famous for her eclectic range of stage costumes for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and recently she was challenged by silicon giants Intel to come up with something that would reshape her world with nothing more than an Ultrabook. Her effort gave birth to this design project known as the Super Guitar Licks Rock Star Jacket, which currently falls under the prototype stage.

Basically, the Super Guitar Licks Rock Star Jacket functions as a denim jacket that is high tech as it has been fitted with LEDs that will respond to guitar music, lighting up whenever you play to create different patterns. Rock on!

C-Explorer 5 Personal Submarine

Big boys’ toys, now that is the dream that many of us men have when we first graduate and get a job, until we realize that the only way to make tons of money the legal way is through business and not working for someone else. The C-Explorer 5 personal submarine could be said to be one of the more unique modes of transportation you can afford if you are a tycoon, where it comes with five comfortable seats, an air conditioning system and an optional iPad controlled audio system.

Thanks to U-Boat Worx of the Netherlands who built and designed it, the C-Explorer 5 is by far and large the most spacious and comfortable sub from their catalogue, but the asking price of $2.4 million each would definitely mean it is available only to a select few. Sporting a depth rating of more than 325 yards, the C-Explorer comes with a powerful LED lighting system, but there are no built-in lasers to protect you from zombie sharks underwater.

Angry Birds Star Wars Hoth Level Coming

Anything to do with the Star Wars franchise seems to be a winner, never mind that there are irritating characters from time to time like Jar Jar Binks. Now that Disney owns the whole Star Wars stable, here we are with the second instalment of the Angry Birds Star Wars game, which incidentally, the game itself has already arrived at the pinnacle of the iTunes charts in a record 2.5 hours right after it was launched. In fact, from tomorrow onwards, Rovio will introduce new levels that will see battles take place on the Ice Planet of Hoth. Enjoy the trailer above, and check out the rather porcine-like looks that the AT-AT Walkers have.

We do wonder whether Rovio is keen to explore an Angry Birds Star Trek expansion, now that would be interesting, and will the Borg assimilate them Federation birds?
