Google Maps comes to Nunavut, lets you Street View your way to an Arctic Char fishing hole

Think it’s cold in Chicago? You’ve probably never wintered in Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost territory. This past August (long before the temperature in Cambridge Bay hit negative double digits), Google explorers ventured above the Arctic circle to bring the mapping giant’s Street View tech to the village of 1,500, complete with a walk down Omingmak Street and a peek around the Youth Recreation Complex (which, fittingly, houses an ice hockey rink). You can even stroll past Our Lady of the Arctic Catholic Church or toss a few darts at Ikaluktutiak Elks Lodge No. 593. So, what are you still doing hanging around here? Hit up our source link below to grab your lil’ slice of ice before the thermometer hits 0 this spring.

Windows Blue OS Update In The Pipeline?

Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 operating systems – the former being for computers while the other is meant for the mobile platform, has been around for just a short while, but it seems that the software giant is preparing to roll out an OS update which will be known as Windows Blue, which might even replace Windows 8 in a matter of months. It certainly sounds very far fetched, but who knows? Stranger things might not have happened, but this could very well be the first time. Word has it that Windows Blue will resemble Windows 8 a whole lot, albeit with just some minor user interface tweaks, and will most probably retain the Windows 8 to keep things uniform, although stuff underneath the hood might be different.

It is said that Microsoft wants Windows Blue to be on everyone’s computer, and that would also require Microsoft to price it right, or even release it for free so that users can perform the upgrade. From hence, it is said that Microsoft will roll out regular annual updates that will be standardized across desktop and mobile devices. What do you think of this idea?

Gran Turismo 5 gets Corvette C7 Test Prototype download

As of this morning, PlayStation 3 owners can download a camouflaged Corvette C7 Test Prototype in Gran Turismo 5. This comes from a collaboration between Chevy and the game’s developers, Polyphony Digital, to create an authentic driving experience. The actual vehicle is slated to be unveiled in January.

The developers were careful to replicate the game version of the prototype in such a way that even the smallest details are present. This comes in addition to the last six generations of Corvettes, all of which are available for gameplay in Gran Turismo. Says the announcement, the Corvette is one of the most popular cars amongst gamers.

Vice President of Chevrolet Global Marketing offered this statement. “Until now, only the most skilled drivers on the Corvette team have been authorized to push the test prototypes to the limits on some of the most challenging track surfaces in the world. Through this unique collaboration with Gran Turismo, Chevrolet is able, for the first time, to give performance car enthusiasts access to such an exclusive driving experience.”

You can nab the download from the PlayStation Store for free. The Gran Turismo franchise has seen sales in excess of 67 million since it was first launched, and holds the title of the all-time highest selling PlayStation console exclusive. Says Polyphony’s President, “As car enthusiasts, we’re thrilled to give fans this extraordinary level of access to the seventh generation Corvette that otherwise would not be possible.”

U-Boat Worx unveils underwater limousine

U-Boat Worx, a Dutch manufacturer of submarines, has released its “subsea limousine,” the C-Explorer 5. This nifty underwater vehicle, aside from looking like something out of countless science fiction movies, can seat four and is aimed at the affluent end of the market. It was unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in September, and is now available for about $2.4 million.

The CE5 is targeted at resorts and well-off citizens who have always wanted to take a stroll under the water. It’s a pressurized vessel constructed of steel and acrylic capable of descending up to 1,000 feet into the murky depths of whatever body of water you happen to be closest to. It can hit speeds up to 3 knots, which is about 3.5mph.

Like many smartphones, the vessel’s battery life comes in at around 8 hours of operation, with an optional upgrade to 16 hours for those concerned about running out of power in the middle of a watery nowhere. Should something go awry, the CE5 can support its crew for 96 hours. The batteries are high-capacity lithium-ion.

Steering is achieved via dual-2kWh thrusters and an options dual-1.2kWh thrusters for side-to-side movement. For the average sojourner, however, it’s the CE5′s interior that is likely to be most impressive. You’ll find LED lighting and air-conditioning rounded out with a pleasant design and round pod-like window. The CE5 offers a remote-controlled device that’s tethered to the vessel for exploration, as well as an external arm, and HD camcorder, and sonar.

Samsung printer hack could let the wrong ones in (updated)

Samsung printer hack could let the wrong ones in

Typically, when we think of hacks, our minds conjure images of compromised security systems, personal computers or server farms, but printers? According to Neil Smith, a researcher from the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team, unauthorized access to those devices could be a very real threat — if you happen to own a Samsung model. Discovered and submitted to the agency this past Monday, the exploit unearthed by Smith takes advantage of an “SNMP backdoor” : an internet protocol that allows for remote network administrative control without authentication. The vulnerability — which would give hackers access to data sent to the printer, as well as control over it (think: ceaseless printing!) — affects most units released before November of this year. For its part, Samsung’s promised a patch will be forthcoming. But, in the meantime, if you want to avoid exposing any personal data or the possibility of a seemingly possessed printer, it’s best you steer clear of rogue WiFi connections.

Update: CNET has published a statement from Samsung outlining the update schedule for affected printers. Firmware that fixes the issue will be available for all “current” models by November 30th, and for “all other models” by the end of the year. The company also recommends disabling SNMPv1.2 or switching to SNMPv3 mode until the updates are released.

Summer McLane: How to Un-Invite Family And Friends From Your Wedding

Divorce Causes: 5 Communication Habits That Lead To Divorce

By Deb Dutilh for YourTango.com

Studies show that a lack of communication is the number one reason couples get divorced. Nagging is a major culprit — relentless reminders, suggestions and advice on how, when and why we should do things. But what are some of the other bad communication habits that erode away at relationships?

1. Inauthenticity. How many times do you catch yourself saying “yes” when you really mean “no?” Do you say, “I don’t know” for fear of being judged, dismissed or rejected? When we systematically accept things against our will, shut down to keep the peace and rationalize why that’s okay, we set ourselves up for resentment and anger down the line.

Huawei Honor 2 passes through the FCC with North America-capable 3G, not much else

Huawei Honor 2 passes through the FCC with North American 3G, not much else

Huawei upped its ante in the smartphone games with the Honor 2 just weeks ago, but with few mentions of where the phone maker might place its bets outside of its native China. An FCC filing has at least raised the slim chance that Huawei might look to North America. The newly-tested device doles out HSPA+ support on the 850MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands, letting it work with the 3G of just about any American or Canadian GSM carrier. Without any LTE to speak of, though, the Honor 2 variant is more likely to appear on a smaller network that doesn’t yet have access to the faster data, such as T-Mobile or Wind — if it shows up at all, that is. As FCC approvals only occasionally spoil a launch, we’ll mostly be waiting to see if Huawei or carriers step forward before anticipating the mid-tier phone on this side of the Pacific.
