Richard Lustig, 7-Time Lottery Winner, Gives Tips On Winning The Powerball Jackpot

An Orlando man is offering up some tips on how to win the Powerball jackpot, which is up to a record $500 million.

Seven-time Lottery Game Grand Prize winner Richard Lustig has some advice on how to increase one’s odds of winning. “Luck has nothing to do with it,” he told WKMG Orlando.

He advises treating the lottery like it’s a job, playing each and every week, according to WKMG. “Playing smart” each week includes sticking to a budget and only buying the amount of tickets one can afford. “You don’t want to wake up Thursday morning and realize you’re a loser and then pull your hair out trying to replace the money you spent,” he told WKMG.

Louisville To Join ACC After Conference Presidents’ Vote: Report

— The Atlantic Coast Conference’s presidents and chancellors have voted unanimously to add Louisville as the replacement for Maryland, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday morning.

The person said ACC leaders also considered Connecticut and Cincinnati over the past week before choosing to add the Cardinals from the Big East. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the ACC has not publicly discussed future expansion plans.

Sea Level Rise Accelerating Faster Than Initial Projections

From Climate Central’s Michael D. Lemonick:

Sea level is rising as the planet warms up, but how much it will rise, and how fast is still something climate scientists are working out. And according to a study released late Tuesday in Environmental Research Letters the ocean is already rising faster than the most recent authoritative report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was projecting as recently as 2007.

“Results show that global temperature continues to increase in very good agreement with the best estimates of the IPCC,” the authors of the new study write. “The rate of sea level rise of the past decades, on the other hand, is greater than projected by the IPCC models. This suggests that IPCC sea level projections for the future may also be biased low.”

Microsoft rumored to launch yearly updates for Windows

While some might think that Microsoft‘s next big update to its operating system lineup will be called “Windows 9,” there are reports that claim Microsoft is working on a new platform for how the company handles future Windows operating system releases, and they’ve codenamed it “Windows Blue” for the time being.

No one’s really sure what Microsoft has planned, but according to ZDNet, several sources are saying that Microsoft will be bringing an interim release sometime mid-2013, and will include UI changes and alterations to the entire Windows platform and pricing. We’re not sure if it’ll be some kind of normal service pack, or if it’s a more rounded service pack that would come with new features, as well as bugfixes.

Either way, Microsoft may be moving toward rapid-release updates of their Windows OS, meaning updates to their operating system every year or so — similar to what Apple is doing with OS X. This means we could see versions of Windows that stick with the “8″ prefix, but with a decimal tacked onto it, like Windows 8.1, Windows 8.2, etc. For now, though, Microsoft is calling it Windows Blue.

The update would be low-cost to ensure that users upgrade, just like OS X, and the upgrade process would be simple. So, once the update is released, the Windows SDK will be updated as well to support the new update, and Microsoft will stop accepting apps for Windows 8, and will begin to push developers to create apps for Windows Blue. It seems like a streamlined process, and one that Apple has had success with already, so we’re interested to see how it works for Microsoft’s platform.

Mallory Owens, Alleged Anti-Gay Hate Crime Victim, Says Attack Wasn’t Motivated By Sexuality

The victim of an alleged Alabama hate crime is dismissing claims that the attack was somehow motivated by her sexuality.

Mallory Owens, 23, told CBS affiliate WKRG that the alleged Nov. 22 attack was “just a bad, bad night.”

Though her family has said she was beaten by her girlfriend’s brother Travis Hawkins Jr. because of her sexuality, Owens noted, “A lot of things have happened between us, but it doesn’t make me hate her brother. I don’t hate her family at all, or anybody for that matter.”

Nassim Taleb Deigns To Sit For An Interview

How much does Nassim Taleb dislike journalists? Let me count the ways. “An erudite is someone who displays less than he knows; a journalist or consultant the opposite.” “This business of journalism is about pure entertainment, not the search for the truth.” “Most so-called writers keep writing and writing with the hope, some day, to find something to say.”

Tom Ricks Turns Down MSNBC: ‘You’re Just Like Fox, But Not As Good At It’

Tom Ricks may have called out Fox News, but it appears that he’s no fan of MSNBC either.

The Pulitzer Prize winner recently accused Fox News of “operating as the wing of the Republican Party” during an interview on the network. His appearance lasted about 90 seconds.

Now, add MSNBC to the latest cable news network Ricks has dissed. The Washington Post’s Melinda Henneberger reported:

Grover Norquist Targeted In Fiscal Cliff Debate, Denounces ‘Sugar Plum’ Republicans

WASHINGTON — With Republicans showing signs of bending on taxes for the richest Americans as the nation nears the so-called fiscal cliff, Democrats mounted an effort Wednesday to put a little more public pressure on the GOP and its anti-tax pledge.

The cliff is the combination of expiring Bush-era tax cuts and mandated budget cuts that start in January. President Barack Obama and Democrats propose extending all the tax cuts for income under $250,000, while letting rates revert to the Clinton-era 39.6 percent for the top 2 percent of earners.

Most Republicans have adamantly opposed any such tax hike, adhering to a “no new taxes” pledge they signed with anti-tax champion Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform.
