Report indicates that iOS has taken over Android in smartphone platform market share

Apple and Google have been competing with each other for the number one smartphone platform spot in terms of market share, although it is safe to say that Android has been dominating for a good portion of the time. Well in recently released report from the folks at Kantar World Panel, they have reported that it looks like based on a 12 week period of smartphone sales which ended on the 28th of October, it looks like Apple’s iOS platform may have finally knocked Android off its throne, albeit barely at 48.1% market share, while Android sits at 46.7%.

According to Kantar, it seems that this lead that Apple is enjoying is greatly attributed to the release of the iPhone 5, in which the report claims, via consumer surveys and third party reports, managed to grab 13% users from Android and an additional 6% from Blackberry users and first time smartphone owners. Kantar believes that Apple will be able to beat its previous record of 49.3% market share within the next two periods, although whether that is possible and will actually happen remains to be seen.

Biscotti TV phone connects to the cloud, adds home security functionality

MyBiscotti

As a video conferencing solution, Biscotti’s TV phone scores high marks for form, function and charm. But apart from the cutesy name and appealing build, it’s more or less a $199 one trick pony — or it was, anyway. Which is why the company’s now tethering the peripheral to the internet-at-large and bolstering its functionality with the newly announced MyBiscotti Cloud Services. The version 2.0 software (available via an OTA update) pushes beyond simple two-way TV video chat with the addition of home monitoring features like the self-explanatory Time Lapse mode, as well as Live Image viewing, which culls streams from all networked Biscotti cams. Further, users that find themselves away from the roost will also be able to swap out settings on the fly simply by visiting the outfit’s dedicated site. As of now, there’s no extra cost for the expanded suite of services, but you will have to plunk down for the coffee biscuit-shaped peripheral. Official PR after the break.

Otterbox releases Commuter and Defender series cases for the Nokia Lumia 920

We’ve seen the videos in which drop tests have been conducted on Nokia’s latest flagship device, the Lumia 920. As expected from Nokia, the Lumia 920 appears to be capable of withstanding a beating and a fair amount of abuse before it shows signs of significant damage, but we’re sure that in spite of this, there are users who would prefer protecting the body of their Lumia 920 with a third-party case. If that describes you or someone you know, Otterbox has released a pair of cases for the Lumia 920 that should add on to the perhaps unintended ruggedness of the device.

These two cases come in the form of the Commuter series and the Defender series, with the former coming in a silicon and polycarbonate design that should protect your phone without adding too much bulk. The latter case on the other hand features a polycarbonate design with a built-in screen membrane and a silicon layer that will offer slightly more protection at the expense of added bulk. The Commuter series will set you back $34.95 while the Defender series will go for $49.95.

Apple’s new iPad mini print ads are pretty clever

The size of the regular iPad makes it a very pleasant experience when reading ebooks or surfing the web, although given its size, it also makes it a little harder to carry around. Portability might have been solved when Apple introduced the smaller iPad mini and if you were wondering if the iPad mini might be able to offer up the same reading experience as its larger sibling, Apple is here to help you imagine that with its recent print ads which were spotted in publications such as Time magazine and The New Yorker.

As you can see in the image above, Apple has placed an ad for the iPad mini behind the front cover of the magazine, replicating its cover albeit in the iPad mini’s size. It basically gives the viewer the idea that you will be able to enjoy your magazines at a readable size without compromising too much albeit in digital format. Of course comfort and readability all boils down to the user and whether they prefer holding up a full sized magazine or a smaller digital version, but if you were wondering how your favorite magazines might hold up in the iPad mini, perhaps these ads might give you an idea.

Retina Adobe Photoshop CS6 coming on the 11th of December?

Come 11th of December, Adobe will be hosting an event called “Create Now Live” and while it seems that the event could be centered around the Adobe Creative Cloud, it looks like there is a good chance that the event will also be when Adobe will be releasing a Retina version of its Photoshop CS6 image editing software. While it has not been officially confirmed, a video Adobe uploaded on YouTube seems to have hinted at that. If you were to watch the video above, you might notice that Photoshop is running on Apple’s Retina MacBook Pro, and when the video zooms in on the software, you might notice that the software appears to be pretty sharp looking which seems consistent with it being updated to support the MacBook Pro’s Retina display. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed but hopefully all will be revealed come 11th December, so check back with us then for the details.

Skullcandy unveils PLYR2 wireless gaming headset

Skullcandy has announced the launch of its latest gaming headset, the PLYR2. This device is wireless, and compatible with whatever your gaming preference is: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or computer/mobile. This is one of the two units in Skullcandy’s newly launched series of gaming headsets, the second of which will be available next year.

The headset’s most boast-able feature is its wireless connectivity, allowing gamers to eschew the shackles of wired connections. The device runs at 2.4GHz and offers the company’s Supreme Sound proprietary system, which aims to provide overall better audio clarity. The boom mic is adjustable with a mute mode that can be toggled on and off, while three different EQ modes provide an adaptable listening experience.

Skullcandy’s Vice President of Marketing and Creative Nate Morley offered this statement. “The crossover between sport and gaming has been growing for decades and has gotten to a point where the two are nearly inseparable – gamers love action sports and sportsmen love to game. This is why we’re developing new cutting-edge products, such as the SLYR, PLYR2 and PLYR1 which are both authentic to the Skullcandy ethos and can comfortably live and play in both worlds.”

You can pick up the PLYR2 now in black, white, or teal featured in the image above for $129.00 at Skullcandy.com, or via one of its retailers, including Gamestop and Besy Buy. If the PLYR2 is a bit out of your price range, you can grab the SLYR (wired) headset for $79.99. Early next year, Skullcandy will be launching the PLYR1 headset, which will offer 2.4GHz wireless audio/Dolby Surround Sound 7.1.
