Apple Maps’ turn-by-turn navigation still M.I.A for Australians

During the whole fiasco with Apple Maps, it was suggested that one of the reasons Apple decided to drop Google Maps and release their own solution early was due to a couple of reasons, one of them being that Google had reportedly refused to include voice guided turn-by-turn navigation in their iOS update. It’s not really that big of deal if Apple could offer a replacement or an alternative, which they did, although unfortunately it seems that Australia is still left out of the loop.

It turns out that Australia was supposed to get turn-by-turn navigation this month, but according to Apple’s website, this particular feature will not be making its way down under until sometime in November, although no specific dates were given. Heading on over to Apple’s website, it seems that Australia is the only country that has yet to receive this feature, while 52 others have already received it. This probably won’t sit well with Australians as there have been complaints in the past over how Apple products in Australia are more expensive than other countries in the world, despite Australia’s currency being stronger than the US.

Sanpei Optics combines sunglasses and earbuds into one

Sunglasses with built-in earphones, now where have we heard that one before? This is most definitely not a new concept and has been seen before in the Oakleys Thump pair of sunglasses, probably one of the more odd-looking sunglasses we’ve seen to date. Now if you aren’t a fan of the Thumps and wanted something a bit more sleek and subtle, then this Indiegogo project for Sanpei Optics might be something worth taking a look at. As you can see in the photo above, Sanpei Optics combines a pair of sunglasses with integrated earbuds into a simpler and cleaner look, and the good news is that the earbuds can actually be detached, allowing the sunglasses to be worn normally.

There are two models the project is trying to create – the I.M.I.O (Inspire Me, Inspire Others) and the G.I.Y.A (Give It Your All). The difference between the two is that the I.M.I.O has been designed for prescription lenses in mind, while the G.I.Y.A isn’t. If you’re interested in getting your hands on either sunglass when the project is successfully funded, an early-bird special will let you buy it at $90, with its normal price set at $150. More info on the sunglasses can be found on its Indiegogo page where you will also be able to pledge a donation.

Lord of the Rings Online finally gets a Mac client

One of the drawbacks to owning a Mac is that not many games are released which are compatible with both Windows and Mac. Usually Mac compatible games are released later and while installing Bootcamp with Windows is an option, we guess it might be an inconvenience and unnecessary expense for some gamers who don’t think the cost is justified just to play a couple of games. Now the good news is that if you have been meaning to get Lord of the Rings Online but were bummed out by its lack of Mac support, you will be pleased to learn that the game will finally be getting a Mac client.

According to Turbine’s VP of Product Development, Craig Alexander, who spoke to the folks at TUAW, it seems that the Mac client for Lord of the Rings online will be coming this week. Apparently why the Mac version of the game took so long was because the developers were trying to build a native port, rather than depend on emulation or other methods. The Mac version is expected to be identical to the PC version, and it seems that the expansion for the game, Riders of Rohan, was developed with the Mac’s client in mind. The client will be downloadable as a beta and will be able to be downloaded directly from Turbine’s website when available.

Voyager 1 encounters mystery at the edge of our solar system

The Voyager 1 probe has been soaring through the solar system for 35 years. Voyager 1 is currently the most distant man-made object from the Earth in history. Scientists believe that the probe recently left the suns protective sphere of influence. The sphere of influence I’m talking about is the Sun’s magnetic bubble called the heliosphere.

Scientists analyzing data being sent back from Voyager 1 have discovered a mystery at the edge of the solar system’s magnetic boundary with interstellar space. The probe is so far from Earth that it takes over 17 hours for signal to travel from Voyager 1 back to the Earth. Scientists have been anxiously watching key data, including the particle energy count and the magnetic field strength indicator and orientation in an effort to determine precisely when the probe leaves our heliosphere.

Scientists previously believed that when the probe entered an area known as the heliosheath the magnetic field would begin to fluctuate, and the number of high-energy cosmic rays would decrease the magnetic fluctuations. However, scientists looking at the data throughout 2010 found that the opposite actually occurred. When the probe entered the heliosheath, the magnetic field became more chaotic and the number of high-energy particles detected by Voyager 1 actually increased.

This is the mystery that scientists are working to solve right now. The researchers suspect that the magnetic fluctuations in the area surrounding Voyager 1 are somehow energizing charged particles within the heliosheath and therefore, increasing the number of detections by Voyager 1. The scientists are also working now to determine if Voyager 1 has finally left our solar system, and is now cruising through interstellar space.

Paul Ryan’s Future Unclear If He Loses

JANESVILLE, Wis. — Professor Ryan? Lobbyist Ryan? Maybe back to plain-old Congressman Ryan or future President Ryan?

If Paul Ryan loses his bid to become vice president, he is still a man with options. The wonky chairman of the House Budget Committee is one of the Republicans’ best voices in explaining fiscal issues. Should Mitt Romney’s presidential bid fail, Ryan will be a much-sought-after figure in political and business circles.

Red Bull Air Force uses its wings in Malaysia

Red Bull has been behind some very impressive stunts of late. The biggest stunt the energy drink has ever been involved with was Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking jump from 120,000 feet over the surface of the earth. Skydives from insane altitude isn’t all Red Bull sponsors.

The Red Bull Air Force recently took its wing suit flyers Jon DeVore, Miles Daisher, and Othar Lawrence to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The goal for the stunt team was to pilot their wingsuits as close as possible to some of Malaysia’s highest and most iconic buildings. The pilots use their wingsuits to fly between the Petronas Twin Towers.

Interestingly, some of the members of the Red Bull Air Force performed the wingsuit stunts in the Michael Bay blockbuster Transformers 3 in downtown Chicago. The wingsuit pilots were flying at around 120 mph in an urban environment filled with buildings and other hazards. You have to watch the video to see the stunt being performed.

These guys pass so close to the buildings that from some angles, it looks as if they’re about to crash into the building. I can only imagine how sphincter-puckering flying between those twin towers would be. Watch the video below and see for yourself.

These pumpkin speakers could be a great idea for next year’s Halloween

Yes we know, Halloween has unfortunately passed but if you’re already thinking of how you can make 2013’s Halloween even more awesome, then these pumpkin speakers are definitely something worth checking out. While you won’t actually be able to buy them for yourself, it might give you an idea for a project next time and we guess you could sub out the pumpkins for other types of fruit, like a large watermelon perhaps. These pumpkin speakers were put together by Steve Meade and they are actually a set of 500-watt speakers. As you can see, they are connected to a car stereo and while the concept itself might seem somewhat simple, the carving out of the pumpkin along with the wiring was probably quite a complicated and lengthy process so we have to give Meade his due. Great idea, but rather unfortunate as these are probably one of the few speakers we’ve seen that will actually rot within a couple of days.

Gresso’s Regal Titanium luxury phone will cost you $4,500

If there’s one thing that can be said about luxury phones is that they tend to be made out of premium quality materials. They might not necessarily be the best designed phones, nor the most powerful, but it’s certainly quite hard to beat materials such as diamonds, titanium, and other rare gems. That being said, luxury phone maker, Gresso, is back with another luxury phone offering in the form of the Regal Titanium, which as the name has probably given away, will be made from titanium. The use of titanium which not only gives off a rather classy and refined look, will also help prevent the phone from being dented and should be able to withstand some level of abuse, although for $4,500 we wouldn’t dare put it to the test.

The phone itself will be running on Symbian S40 and will include tri-bands (900/1800/1900), Bluetooth connectivity, a 2MP camera, 30MB of internal storage that can be expanded via microSD and will be powered by a li-ion 860mAh battery that promises 5.4 hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby. Like we said earlier, it will be priced at $4,500 and will be available in limited quantities, so if you have the cash to spare, pop on over to Gresso’s website for the details.
