Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac rebranded as Windows Phone

For Mac users who prefer Microsoft as their mobile partner, Windows Phone 7 Connector has been the one bridging the divide so far. The sync app has just been updated to v3.0, gaining support for Windows Phone 8 and a concise new name — “Windows Phone” — to match its Windows 8 counterpart. The new app plays well with Retina Macs too, while other goodies in the changelog include drag-and-drop capability for transferring files in either direction, along with support for iPhoto 9.3.2 and Aperture 3.3.2. Hobbit airline safety video

Are you looking forward to The Hobbit that is set to be shown (the first part of the movie, at least) at the end of this year? If you answered in the affirmative, then you might want to take a trip to New Zealand by flying Air New Zealand, as the airline has managed to cook up a creative method of having you pay attention to the airline safety video by lacing it with characters from Middle Earth. Released in conjunction with the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey movie, the safety video does poke some bit of fun at the Hobbit lifestyle, without compromising on the safety information, of course.

The same folks over at Weta Workshop helped produce this video, which means just about everything has its fair share of authenticity. Heck, director Peter Jackson even managed to squeeze out some time from his busy schedule to make a cameo appearance. No idea on whether the visual distraction will help increase the message’s effectiveness, or will folks just concentrate on all that is Middle Earth without remembering to buckle one’s seat belt?

Mega announced by Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom

Back on October 18, we reported that Megaupload’s founder Kim Dotcom planned to launch a new file sharing service named Mega. Mega will replace the banned Megaupload file-sharing website, which now displays nothing more than a spiffy FBI notice. The new file-sharing network has been announced, and is set to launch in January.

The new website is said to be raid-proof due to hosting outside of the US and an encryption system that absolves Mega of responsibility for hosting copyrighted material. All files uploaded to Mega will be encrypted before they’re uploaded. An encryption key will be provided with each download that lets the downloader decrypt the file.

Because Mega will have no way to view the files uploaded to its system, Dotcom says it cannot be liable for any infringing material. Said Dotcom, “The new Mega will not be threatened by US prosecutors. The new Mega avoids any dealings with US hosters, US domains and US backbone providers and has changed the way it operates to avoid another takedown.”

Dotcom’s house was raided earlier this year, and he served a brief stint in jail. He’s slated for an extradition hearing in January, and faces prosecution in the US. Mega will go live sometime in January; whether it ends up being another Megaupload, destined to be raided and shutdown, is anyone’s guess.

Future police cars equipped to the brim with cameras and sensors

I’m sorry to disappoint you, but the police cars of the future will definitely not be able to fly and apprehend all the bad guys by themselves. However, Motorola Solutions (which is a different entity from that of the Motorola Mobility) did parade a Ford prototype that came loaded with cameras and sensors, with the ultimate aim to merge a bunch of different technologies in a manner that will increase an officer’s awareness, capability and safety. Equipped with a whopping seven cameras as well as a generous hard drive to make sure all that data is stashed away somewhere safe, we like the idea of the backseat camera the most – ensuring that the person sitting behind, cuffed and all, will not be able to try anything funny without being noticed.

Data recorded onto the cameras will help officers save time, too, as a software will be able to read license plates while file ticketing paperwork on the officer’s behalf. If only this is a car that can automatically book whoever is speeding – whether in front or behind the officer’s car.

China’s Tianhe-2 supercomputer could hit 100 petaflops in 2015, may have a race on its hands

Tianhe-1A supercomputer in China

China’s supercomputer development is as much driven by national reputation as by military prowess and science; the country chose to build the Sunway BlueLight MPP with domestic chips knowing that it wouldn’t get the absolute performance crown. It won’t be quite so modest the next time around. China’s National University of Defense Technology wants the Tianhe-2 supercomputer due in 2015 to crack an extremely high 100 petaflops, or five times faster than the record-setting Titan over in the US and a whopping 40 times faster than the Tianhe-1A. Before we hand the crown over, though, Top 500 supercomputer chart keeper Jack Dongarra notes to ITworld that China might have to sprint if it wants the symbolic title: the EU, Japan and US are all striving for the same benchmark, and they’re not backing off anytime soon. The nation’s trump card may have to be long-term plans for an exaflop-strength supercomputer by 2018, at which point we suspect the bragging will simmer down. For awhile.

US Cellular rolls out 4G LTE in 30+ markets

As LTE devices become more commonplace and data demands increase, many users are gravitating towards using 4G mobile broadband. Now more users with have access to the faster mobile network, with US Cellular announcing its plans to roll out new 4G LTE networks in over 30 markets. The network is slated for launch on November 5.

The roll out map is pretty impressive. The new LTE network will arrive in cities in Iowa, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia, although the specific cities were not listed. Soon after that, another roll out will take place in Rockford, IL, Medford, OR, Yakima, WA, and Knoxville, TN.

Says Senior Vice President of Marketing and Chief Marketing Officer for US Cellular, David Kimbell, “With more than half of our customers having access to 4G LTE speeds by the start of the holiday season, we are helping customers simplify and organize their lives more quickly and easier than ever. The 4G LTE network builds upon our award-winning customer satisfaction and is the only one that comes with a valuable rewards program and other unique benefits like Overage Protection and Battery Swap.” According to the press release, US Cellular has the highest call quality and satisfaction of all national carriers.

Customers with LTE devices will be able to download large files fairly quickly, and watch videos and stream music without much – if any – buffering. According to the press release, “customers [will] experience data speeds up to 10 times faster” than 3G data networks. The 4G network can also be used in conjunction with US Cellular’s mobile modems and hotspot devices for use with a laptop or tablet.

QR Code Clock is the bee’s knees

Just how many ways do you think there are around to make good use of QR codes? We have seen them being implemented at graveyards on tombstones before, which is rather creepy when you think about it, but here is yet another way of implementing QR codes without having to be an advertisement of sorts. I am referring to the QR Code Clock – the name itself says it all. The brainchild of Michael Ciuffo, the QR Code Clock could be said to be, in his own words, “technological convenience that really isn’t convenient.” We totally get what he means – most of the time, clocks are meant to be easy to read and decipher, whether they are of the analog or digital variety, but with the QR Code Clock, it is virtually impossible to crack unlike those brain busting watches from Tokyoflash, as all you need to do is snap a photo with your smartphone while using the relevant app in order to tell the time.

Definitely something only you and the other geeky minded folks will be able to appreciate. As for other folks who stroll by your home, they will most probably be wondering just what kind of weird device is there sitting on your shelf, changing its pattern every single second. It is rather ironic that by the time you get an answer from your QR code scanner app on the current time, it would be a few seconds slow.

Verizon HTC Droid DNA is more or less confirmed

The HTC Droid DNA which is more or less the US version of the Japan-bound HTC J Butterfly, is nudging closer towards an official arrival Stateside via Verizon Wireless. After all, it was not too long ago when we first took a peek at a leak from Verizon that pointed out the presence of the HTC Droid DNA, which is a 5” Android-powered handset that sported a cool 1080p display something that most folks thought that it would remain only in the domain of TVs just a couple of years ago.

Identified by its model number 6435LVW, it will, in all probability, launch on the carrier as the HTC Droid DNA. Verizon has kept mum on the situation so far, but as the name has popped up yet again on the website, all we need now is an official announcement from the folks over at Verizon. It is our hope with fingers crossed that Verizon could announce the Droid DNA sometime during the week before Thanksgiving in order to do well during the upcoming holiday season. Would you want to pick up this high end smartphone from HTC when it arrives on Verizon, or do you have some other handset in mind?

Saudi Arabia: Fuel Truck Crash Triggers Explosion That Levels Building, Killing 10 (VIDEO)

By Angus McDowall

RIYADH, Nov 1 (Reuters) – At least 22 people were killed when a fuel truck crashed into a flyover in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Thursday, triggering an explosion that brought down an industrial building, Saudi state television reported.

Al-Ekhbariya television quoted a Saudi civil defence official as saying that at least 111 people were also injured in the incident.

The civil defence department confirmed there were deaths from a traffic accident involving a gas tanker that hit a bridge in eastern Riyadh, causing a gas leak and an explosion in a nearby heavy machinery and vehicles warehouse, according to the state news agency SPA.

“The truck driver was surprised by a road accident on its route, causing it to crash into one of the pillars of the bridge,” spokesman Captain Mohamed Hubail Hammadi said.

He said the incident resulted in a “number of deaths and injuries”, without giving specific details.

The civil defence chief, Saed al-Tweijri, said the fire had been brought under control. He blamed the tanker driver for the accident, which he said had resulted in the gas leak setting off an explosion in the warehouse.

The building, several storeys high, was almost levelled by the blast, with only one corner left standing. Several adjacent buildings were damaged and nearby vehicles, including a minibus on the flyover, set on fire, witnesses said.

Television footage and pictures posted on social media showed a body lying by burnt-out vehicles and at least two charred bodies seated in a car.

More than 100 emergency personnel were combing the wreckage on the flyover and searching for victims in the rubble of the building, which housed the operations of Zahid Tractor, a distributor of heavy machinery.

“I was inside the building when the blast came. Then boom, the building collapsed. Furniture, chairs and cabinets blasted into the room I was in,” said survivor Kushnoo Akhtara, a 55-year-old Pakistani worker, who was covered in dirt and bleeding from multiple cuts over his body. “My brother is still inside under the rubble. There are lots of people in there.”

Saudi Arabia is still on holiday after the Muslim Eid al-Adha feast, which began last Friday.
