Windows Phone 8 random reboot fix coming soon

We reported last week that Microsoft was looking into complaints stating that HTC and Nokia handsets running Windows Phone 8 were randomly rebooting. The company didn’t have much to say on the issue aside from that it was “currently investigating reports of these incidents.” Now, a little over a week later, Microsoft says that it has pinpointed the problem and will have a fix out soon.

In addition to randomly rebooting, Windows Phone 8 users are also having issues with email syncing. These trail on the recent launch of the mobile OS, which already has an uphill battle against the powerhouse likes of Android and iOS. The longer it takes for Microsoft to push out a fix, the more it could suffer in the long run as consumers shy away from the buggy system.

Microsoft plans to roll out an over-the-air fix sometime in December, but did not specify what problem is causing the random rebooting and email syncing issues. “We’re continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have identified a cause with our partners. We are working to get an over-the-air update out in December.”

There’s no word on whether the update will be pushed out to all Windows Phone 8 users, or if it is only for those with certain handsets. Until the fix is released, users experiencing this issue may alleviate the problem by uninstalling Skype, something that has been reported to lessen the number of random reboots. Those experiencing email syncing issues, however, are out of luck for awhile.

Microsoft Sells 40 Million Windows 8 Licenses

Just a month after its official launch, Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8, has already sold 40 million. And that number is growing. Announcing the milestone via Microsoft’s Windows blog, the company says that Windows 8 is also outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades. “The journey is just beginning, but I am pleased to announce today that we have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses so far,”said Tami Reller, Chief Marketing Officer for Windows.

Microsoft’s announcement today will not only bring in more Windows 8 users, but it will also attract more developers to build apps that are compatible with the new platform. So far, the number of apps on the Windows Store is increasing steadily, with over 20,000 apps this week. Microsoft plans to up the ante to 30,000 apps by the end of the year. Microsoft adds that some apps in the Windows Store are already earning as much as $25,000. That’s because developers can keep the 80 percent of the revenue they make from the downloads.

OCZ Vector SSD review roundup: consistently fast

OCZ Vector SSD review roundup consistently fast

When OCZ gave us a peek at its Vector SSD, we were curious as to how the drive would fare with a Barefoot 3 controller built through the team from its Indilinx buyout. Would it be the validation of a new strategy, or produce classic rookie mistakes? As long as you’re fine with the OCZ badge, it’s mostly the former. Reviews don’t have the Vector winning outright in every benchmark, but it’s one of the more reliably quick drives on the market; multiple sites point out that Barefoot 3’s balanced approach to techniques like garbage collection (freeing up data blocks for future use) keeps the overall speed high. Write performance is the strong suit, staying closer to the ideal where others sometimes trail off quickly. Drawbacks most center around the less predictable factors — Barefoot 3 doesn’t have an established track record for reliability, and the pricing isn’t always favorable against high-end peers like Samsung’s SSD 840 Pro. That OCZ managed to do so well with its first in-house controller is still a positive sign, and those willing to give the Vector a shot may find it worth the initial uncertainty.

Scavenger Hunt Proposal Includes Music, Loved Ones (VIDEO)

We’ve seen engagement scavenger hunts, proposals set to a special song, and even videos that use friends and family to pop the big question, but we’ve never seen a proposal that combines all three!

Stephen Kaes did just that this month when he proposed to Nicole Frie, his girlfriend of four and a half years, with a video scavenger hunt. The clues in the video featured lyrics from romantic songs, which were written on signs held up by family and friends.

Kaes told HuffPost Weddings via email that he got the idea for the scavenger hunt while brainstorming with his sister.

Female Military Members Sue To Serve In Combat

SAN FRANCISCO — Four female service members filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging the Pentagon’s ban on women serving in combat, hoping the move will add pressure to drop the policy just as officials are gauging the effect that lifting the prohibition will have on morale.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, is the second one this year over the 1994 rule that bars women from being assigned to ground combat units, which are smaller and considered more dangerous since they are often in battle for longer periods.
