Some Shooting Challenges are crazy-popular, others, usually falling over the holidays, are eerily quiet. So this week, for our Rockwell remake results, we’re going to highlight our favorite of a small bunch, by Andrew Drozd. More »

Eddy Cue will lead Apple Maps following Williamson’s departure
Apple Maps has been a black-eye on all iOS products ever since it came out and still stands as the most ridiculed and, sometime hated, Apple feature. Apple Maps disclosed secret-military bases, Bloomberg reports that Richard Williamson, the leader of the Mapping team at Apple was fired by his manager, SVP Eddy Cue. This has not been officially announced at this point. (more…)

Pentagon Wants EMP Grenade
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe have seen the devastating effects of an EMP blast before – mostly in comics, and more recently, in a plethora of sci-fi movies. Well, it seems that the EMP blast is something that the Pentagon is looking for, and to be more specific, they way an electromagnetic pulse grenade for their troops – the sooner, the better, of course. Imagine tossing one of these bad boys in the vicinity of the enemy’s main computer, and when it goes off, watch havoc ensue as all electronics within range will fry and be rendered as useless. Needless to say, the Pentagon figured out that such real-life capability would come in handy, and has put up a request for a Tony Stark wannabe to invent one.
Basically, the EMP grenade is meant for individual soldiers to put down IEDs without having to load them down with something far too unwieldy, complicated and large. In general, IEDs are blown up on purpose remotely, but situations are not always ideal for that to happen, so disabling it from a distance is always a far better option. After all, it is better to err on the side of caution, no?

Google adds Drive integration to new Gmail composer, ups attachment limit to 10 gigs
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you’ve used Gmail to send attachments, chances are you’ve hit that 25MB limit once or twice. Beginning today, Google is rolling out a new Drive integration feature, letting you insert files that you already have in the cloud, effectively boosting the limit 400 fold to 10 gigs. The feature isn’t available to everyone just yet, but if you’re using the new composer tool and see the Drive logo in the bottom toolbar, you should be good to go. Simply click the icon and choose your file — if the intended recipient doesn’t already have access, you’ll be prompted to give them the nod. And, because the file is already stored in the cloud, any changes you make after the message goes out will be visible to your recipient, effectively letting you tweak that presentation or term paper after the submission deadline has passed. You’ll find the full scoop at the source link below.

Toshiba TabletMan Wows The Crowd
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe tablet market is definitely a crowded one – at any one time you are able to find dozens of tablets, and with the crazy kind of fragmentation that the Android operating system has (although it does seem to be getting better now), choosing the right kind of tablet for your needs gets more and more challenging. Well, it seems that the Toshiba TabletMan is one of the more recent and definitely zanier efforts in attempting to draw attention away from the hugely successful iPad from Apple.
The Toshiba TabletMan debuted at the SITEX tech conference in Singapore last week, where he was specially suited up in order to help Toshiba with the promotion of its tablet range. Coming in black rubber, electro-luminescent lights, and 11 Toshiba tablets that would certainly remind one all too much of Tron, the Toshiba TabletMan proceeded to tour the city-state, where random folks were asked to record their wishes for the future onto the different tablets. These recordings were automatically uploaded to Toshiba’s YouTube and Facebook accounts for that added viral touch, now how about that?
The Toshiba TabletMan is said to continue his tour of Asia in the coming weeks, although I do wonder its effectiveness in spreading the word.

Ever since Google Drive made its debut in April this year, you could say that millions of folks have already flocked over to the platform, using Drive as a digital place to stash away, create and share files. Of course, Google always seeks to improve the way they do things, as well as make life generally easier for the masses, which is why from today onwards, you are able to perform sharing of content with others in a manner that is easier than ever before. In fact, you can now insert files from Drive straight into an email without having to leave your Gmail, now how does that sound?
With Drive, you can now have a field time inserting files of up to 10GB in size, which is 400 times more compared to a traditional attachment. I guess this means you can start sending complete video files that were encoded in your favorite video compression format to another person without batting an eyelid, and it is definitely worth looking into if you are an avid resident on the cloud.

If you thought that your parents were being unreasonable, asking you to call them when you have arrived at the prom, and arriving at the hotel or prom venue when the event is over, perhaps you might want to head on to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and live there as a female for a month to truly appreciate the kind of freedom you have here. For the longest time, women in Saudi Arabia cannot travel without consent from their male guardians and are unable to drive, and the latest development shackles them even more. It seems that women there are being monitored by an electronic system, where it is capable of tracking any cross-border movements to ensure that all the ladies and perhaps, one’s harem remain where they should.
As of last week, Saudi women’s male guardians started to receive text messages on their handsets, where these messages will reveal the location of the women under their custody should they happen to leave the country. Of course, it is all good and well if you are traveling with them, but if you are at the office, thinking that all is well at home, while receiving such a text message, hold on to your beard and think carefully just where they might have gone.
Needless to say, this electronic tracking system of women has received more condemnation in general than approval. What do you think?

BlackBerry Patagonia 9620 Leaked
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhile we do know that Research In Motion (RIM for short) is about to bet the entire farm on the release of the BlackBerry 10 operating system next year, here we are with a leak of an upcoming hardware known as the BlackBerry Patagonia 9620, which will carry with it a QWERTY keyboard, paying homage to the BlackBerry devices of old. Of course, you will not find BlackBerry 10 running on this bad boy, but rather, there will be BlackBerry OS 7.1 that runs proceedings from underneath the hood, where it is aided by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor alongside 768MB RAM.
These specifications are nothing much to shout about, sporting a 2.44-inch, 480 x 360 resolution display, 2GB of internal memory that can be augmented via a microSD memory card slot, a 5-megapixel camera at the back, GPS navigation, Wi-Fi connectivity and PTT support. No idea on availability, but Nextel Mexico does seem to have locked it down for a December release. This would surely rank among the budget-minded who want a BlackBerry for their everyday use.

HP and network gateway hardware developer Nomadix have settled a patent infringement lawsuit that dates back to 2009, where Nomadix sued HP, as well as a handful of other, smaller companies, for unauthorized use of the company’s patents. Nomadix said they were seeking damages and injunctions over use of their “fundamental innovations” in mobile computing and network access technology.
Nomadix included eight of its patents in the lawsuit out of the 100 or so patents that the company currently owns. Financial terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed, but according to Nomadix, the settlement includes a license to HP for certain portions of Nomadix’s patent portfolio dealing with internet access technologies.
Nomadix is best known for developing internet gateway products, and is a subsidiary of DOCOMO interTouch, which acquired Nomadix in 2008. Nomadix had filed its original patent suit against HP in 2009, and also included 10 other companies in the lawsuit — most of which are smaller companies like Wayport, iBAHN, Guest-Tek, LodgeNet, Aruba Networks, and Superclick.
The chairman of Nomadix, Charles Reed, says that the company is “pleased to conclude the litigation between [Nomadix and HP] in a manner that respects Nomadix’s patents.” Reed continued by stating that company will continue to “enforce” their patent portfolio in litigation, but he says that it’s “gratifying” to reach a settlement with HP that “recognizes the value of Nomadix’s patents.”

Apple’s Eddy Cue reportedly fires Richard Williamson, who oversaw the iOS 6 Maps team
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe aren’t apt to ever hear this in official fashion, but Bloomberg has it on good authority that Apple’s newly-promoted Eddy Cue has just fired the guy who was unfortunately leading the Maps team at the time of iOS 6’s release. If you’ll recall, Cue was placed in charge of both Siri and Maps during an executive shakeup back in October, and it seems that he’s clearing the runway in order to make things better in the months to come. The report also mentions that Cue is “seeking advice from outside mapping-technology experts and prodding digital maps provider TomTom to fix landmark and navigation data it shares with Apple.” It’s assumed that the goal here is to install a new leadership team within the Maps group, but it’s unclear if it’ll happen prior to Google’s own standalone iOS app becoming available. For those curious as to why such a drastic move had to be made, head over to Apple’s Cupertino campus and use iOS 6’s Maps app to search for “convenience store.” Evidently, the closest one is some 1.5 hours north in San Francisco. True story.
