Wahoo Balance Smartphone Scale: Wireless Weigh-Ins to Combat the Holidays

It’s never good when your bathroom scale gives you inconsistent readings. That’s probably one of the reasons why people seem to like these new high-tech scales that can track your weight history via your smartphone. There aren’t too many available on the market yet, so it’s good to see more alternatives popping up like this one from Wahoo Fitness.

The Wahoo Balance Smartphone Scale is powered by Bluetooth, and it allows you to track your weight and BMI over time. It will send your weigh-ins directly to your iPhone or iPad via a free app. The scale itself can manage up to 16 different users and it can hold up to 130 weight readings. Keep in mind that it only works with the Phone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (5th generation), iPad (3rd and 4th generations), and iPad Mini – presumably because it’s using Bluetooth 4 tech.

The scale is available for pre-order now for $99(USD). Orders will start shipping in the first week of December, so they could make a nice gift idea – assuming the recipient doesn’t think you’re trying to send them a message about their weight.

Let Your Phone Bunjee

Klutzy Alison coming at you. I’m always dropping something. Unfortunately the phone is part of that whole klutziness thing. Yep, it can be expensive. So any device that can prevent the extra (and unnecessary) investment is well worth it. But I still need quick access to take a call or snap a picture.

Some inventive folks in the UK decided that bunjee jumping was a good inspiration for a phone tether. Makes sense. myBunjee® adapts to any phone. Simply slip the harness over your unit and clip the other end to your coat, bag, jeans or anything secure. The extendable coil means the phone can only go so far – yet is still within reach. And myBunjee provides a great extra layer of protection from theft.

What makes myBunjee even more unique is the fact the units can be branded on the back. Imagine your company’s logo on a device attached to all your customer’s phones. Or maybe you need a functional gift for hundreds of employees. Who needs another pen set or squishy toy? Get people something they will use!

myBunjee founders recently appeared on the famous fundraising show Dragon’s Den. Four of the five dragons were interested and funding commitment has been made. So expect to see much more of myBunjee.  Units are available on their site: the classic at £6.95, the beaded version at £9.95 and a lanyard version (non-bunjee) at £7.95. All are available in multiple colors. If you prefer a branded version simply contact them for rates. As phones become our lifeline it makes sense to keep them close…and attached. And it provides a great branding opportunity for businesses out there.

Setting aside the smartphone: two weeks with Samsung’s Galaxy Camera

Setting aside the smartphone two weeks with Samsung's Galaxy Camera

Exploring the world with the hottest cameras and smartphones, I’ve grown accustomed to drawing discreet glances from curious gadget enthusiasts. In Tokyo, it was Canon’s EOS M camera that netted polite peeks. In Hong Kong, it was the Galaxy Note II. From the moment I exposed the striking Galaxy Camera in Bangkok, however, those subtle scans turned into full-on stares, with several courageous passersby even inquiring about the latest Android-based Samsung device dangling from a strap around my wrist.

“Is that a phone or a camera?” Well, it’s certainly not the best camera, nor is it a passable “phone,” but for this early adopter, at least, it was poised to replace both. When Samsung first revealed its Jelly Bean-powered superzoom hybrid at IFA, the challenge became clear — there wasn’t room in my life for two Galaxy gadgets, but a 21x zoom-equipped all-in-one sounded mighty promising. After I finally unpacked it, the 4.8-inch, touchscreen-equipped, 16.1-megapixel shooter didn’t leave my side once during the next two weeks.

It streamed music in the gym, downloaded email on the go, and provided walking directions and historical context as I explored Thailand. But the Galaxy Camera’s impressive zoom also brought me far closer to the action than even the most powerful camera phone, and a micro-SIM from iPhoneTrip enabled instant uploads to Dropbox and Instagram far from the nearest open hotspot. As you may have gathered from our review, the Galaxy Camera wasn’t designed to replace anyone’s smartphone, and with the jumbo footprint and mediocre battery upping the inconvenience factor, could such a device feasibly become your one and only? You’ll find the answer after the break.

Back in 2008 Mcor Technologies unveiled its brilliant Matrix 3D printer that created models from a stack of regular old copier paper. It was a cheap way to dabble in 3D printing, and now the company has unveiled a new model, the Iris, that adds a bit of color to your creations. More »

Meizu MX2 Is Now Official

It was slightly more than a week ago when we reported that we spotted the Meizu MX2 in the wild, and it did not take too long before this spanking new smartphone has become official. Yes sir, the Meizu MX2 has just been announced on an official basis, and underneath the hood, this bad boy packs in a quartet of 32nm Cortex-A9 CPU processors, accompanied by 2GB RAM, carry a 4.4″ display at WXGA resolution (which amounts to 1280 x 800 pixels) alongside a rather impressive 347 ppi pixel density. Shame that it does not fall under the phablet category to keep up with the times, but perhaps there is some good as well for it being a decent sized smartphone.

Apart from a speedier GPU, there is also Meizu’s version of Flyme 2.0 running on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Folks living in China will be able to get their hands on the Meizu MX2 when it hits retail shelves in that part of the world from the middle of December onward in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, retailing for $400, $480 and $640, respectively – and these will no doubt be unlocked devices. There is no word on a global release of the Meizu MX2 just yet, so stay tuned.

Apple Buys ‘Lightning’ Trademark From Motorcycle Company Harley-Davidson

Who would have thought motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson owned something Apple Inc. might desperately desire?

Back in September, Apple debuted its “Lightning” dock connector, a new charging port for iPhone 5 that the company said would make its way onto future devices. The port also happened to share a name with a line of patented Harley-Davidson bikes that were never released.

Patently Apple reports that Apple recently purchased the European trademark, originally claimed by the infamous motorcycle company in 2005.

Facebook Censors Picture Of Woman’s Elbow That Looks Like A Breast (PHOTO)

Facebook has something against elbows — at least, elbows that somewhat resemble bare breasts.

That was the conclusion of a recent Facebook experiment perpetrated by the operators of the Theories of the Deep Understanding of Things (TOTDUOT) Tumblr set out to show the error of the social media giant’s censor-happy ways.

In order to prove their point, the people behind the Tumblr posted a photo last week that showed a woman in a bathtub, her elbows propped up on the sudsy sides. However, at first glance, one of the elbows could be confused for the “giant left breast on a one-armed woman,” as the Daily Dot writes.

GOP Senators: Susan Rice Meeting Left Us ‘More Disturbed’ Than Before

Republican Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) said on Tuesday that their highly anticipated meeting with U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice about the Sept. 11 anniversary attack in Benghazi, Libya, hadn’t allayed their concerns about either the administration’s explanation of the attack or Rice’s qualifications as a potential secretary of state.

“Bottom line, I’m more disturbed now than I was before that the 16th of September explanation about how Americans died in Benghazi, Libya, by Ambassador Rice I think does not do justice to the reality at the time and, in hindsight, clearly was completely wrong,” Graham declared at a press conference after the meeting.

Rice acknowledged in their discussion that she had been incorrect in initially suggesting the attack grew out of a spontaneous protest over an anti-Islam video, Graham said. He then questioned the administration’s decision to roll out Rice as a point person to discuss the attack if she hadn’t known the details.
