Amendment to Netflix bill requiring a warrant to monitor e-mail is cut at the last minute

62d826f5-9b49-4dfb-98b6-eddb889f55aeWe talked about Netflix and the company’s efforts to allow users to share the movies they are watching with friends on social networks such as Facebook. The reason Netflix can’t allow users to automatically share what they’re watching with Facebook friends now has to do with a law that’s been on the books in the United States for years concerning privacy. That act is called the Video Privacy Protection Act.

Last month the Senate Judiciary Committee approved an amendment that would be attached to the Video Privacy Protection Act Amendments Act that would also address accessing other computer information. Specifically the amendment attached to the Netflix bill would’ve required federal law enforcement agencies to get a court order before being able to monitor e-mail or other data stored remotely on the cloud.

The Senate was reportedly ready to approve the video privacy bill including the amendment to require law enforcement officers to get a court order to monitor e-mails. However, for an unknown reason the senators decided to drop the amendment requiring a court order.

Currently the law in the US allows federal agencies to collect e-mail and other data stored on the cloud without needing a warrant if the information has been stored on a third-party server for over 180 days. Rather than obtaining a court order the federal agents only need to show that they have “reasonable grounds to believe “that information located in e-mails or on cloud servers would be useful in a criminal investigation.

Apple Patent Describes Mouse With Built-In Motion Detectors

12.12.27 Gesture 1 640x379 Apple Patent Describes Mouse With Built In Motion DetectorsThe Apple Magic Mouse already accepts multitouch gestures, although with Apple’s iOS devices featuring gyroscopes and accelerometers, we guess we can’t say we’re too shocked to learn that Apple might be interested in incorporating some of that into a mouse perhaps somewhere down the road. While it remains to be seen if such a device will be realized, at the very least we know that Apple has interest in it thanks to a patent discovered by the folks at Apple Insider. (more…)

Mysterious ASUS P1801-T visits the FCC, might be the finished Transformer AiO (updated)

Mysterious ASUS P1801-T visits the FCC, might be the finished Transformer AiO

The FCC sometimes gets a peek at hardware and reveals nothing but a model number to hint at what’s passed through its labyrinth. The latest filing leaving us scratching our heads is for the ASUS P1801-T, a “tablet” which could be the final version of the Transformer AiO prototype we saw back at Computex. How did we arrive at the AiO? Well, the model number is a possible clue — ASUS’ Eee Slate B121 has a 12.1-inch panel, so P1801-T may point to this device having 18 inches of screen. As ASUS’ dual-OS prototype all-in-one is the only (sort of) tablet we’ve seen with roughly that many inches, we assume the company is getting paperwork done before a proper launch at CES 2013. A “P1801” running Android 4.1.1 has also popped up at GLBenchmark, with Tegra3 graphics, a 1,920 x 1080 graphics and a Cortex-A9 CPU inside. If ASUS is keeping two OS’s as per the AiO prototype, that processor caters for only one Microsoft product — Windows RT. We’ll just be kept wondering until we hear something official, but at least for us, an 18-inch Android / RT super-tablet and part-time desktop sounds like it could be a hard sell.

Update: We noticed that the original PR from Computex 2012 stated that the tablet portion could also “become a wireless display for the AiO PC,” which could mean that the base unit is full-fledged Windows 8 machine with x86 hardware, making it a much more tempting idea.

The Only Perfect Temperature Electric French Press

You know, when you have a device that costs close to a Benjamin with a name that goes like this, “The Only Perfect Temperature Electric French Press”, you would surely expect quite a lot from it, don’t you think so? After all, there is the word “perfect” thrown into the mix, so expectations should run pretty high if you are on the lookout for a French press that churns out that perfectly brewed cup of coffee. Surely if the brew turns out otherwise, you might want to look for the culprit elsewhere – like the quality of coffee beans, perhaps?

The Only Perfect Temperature Electric French Press has been touted to be the only French press of its kind that will automatically brew coffee at the perfect temperature for rich, flavorful coffee. It will not be as clumsy as the imprecise heating that happens with a kettle, as this device will work to heat water to between 197° F and 204° F, ensuring that the temperature hovers within that range all the time so that you can extract optimal flavor from beans, followed by transferring the hot water to the French press so that your tongue can dance across the bouquets of flavor that bursts from this pot of coffee. Sporting a durable borosilicate glass body, this bad boy can hold up to 4 cups of coffee, and will be accompanied by a stainless steel plunger and screen.

Mac Mini production reportedly headed to the US

Many Americans are very big on buying products made in America. That can be difficult when it comes to technology products because so many notebooks, smartphones, and other devices are made in other countries, particularly in China. Rumors have been swirling that Apple and Foxconn have been looking to bring more production to the US.

mac-mini

The latest rumor claims that Apple will be moving Mac Mini production to the United States with Foxconn. Production is tipped to come to the US next year courtesy of a $100 million investment. Foxconn currently has production facilities in Asia and South America.

Apple is predicted to sell significantly more Mac mini computers in 2013. Sales estimates for the Mac mini in 2013 are 1.8 million units, which represents a 30% increase from 2012. Previous rumors have suggested that the Apple US manufacturing facility could be located in Fremont, California.

However, that location is unconfirmed. While Apple is intending to bring some of the production of its Mac mini computer to the United States, the company continues to work hard to produce more iPad mini tablets. Shipments for the iPad mini are expected to reach 8 million units in Q4. The component that is difficult to get for the construction of the little tablet continues to be the touchscreen.

Toshiba Develops Lytro-Like Smartphone Camera Sensor

AJ201212270055M Toshiba Develops Lytro Like Smartphone Camera SensorEarlier today we reported that Toshiba had a 20MP image sensor planned for point-and-shoot cameras, and it looks like Toshiba’s foray into the photography industry isn’t stopping there. According to Asahi Shimbun, it seems that Toshiba is currently working on a camera sensor designed for smartphones that will allow smartphone cameras to perform the same function as the Lytro light field camera. For those who are unfamiliar with the Lytro camera, it is a camera introduced back in 2011 that allowed photographers to shoot the image first and focus on the subject later. This allowed photographers to capture in-the-moment photos and worry about the focus points during the editing process.

Unlike the Lytro, Toshiba’s camera module measures about 1cm on each side meaning that it should fit into a smartphone. It features a dense array of 500,000 lenses, each about 0.03mm in diameter which sits in front of a sensor that measures 5mm by 7mm. Each of the 500,000 lenses will capture a slightly different image from the others and will ultimately combine them to form one image from which users can choose which areas they want to focus on based on the previous images taken. Toshiba is planning to commercialize the module by the end of fiscal 2013 and are looking for smartphone manufacturers to adopt its technology. Sounds like an interesting idea – would you like to see such a feature incorporated into your smartphone?

Gracenote ad replacement system will personalize TV commercials

One of the reason TV commercials are so bothersome to most people is because the vast majority are for products we simply have no interest in. Commercials could be more bearable if they were targeted the things that we liked or at least had a passing affinity for. Gracenote has a new ad replacement system able to personalize TV commercials set to begin trials in 2013. The system will show different people different commercials during the same timeframe.

gracenote

The Gracenote system will be demonstrated at CES next month. The targeted commercials are expected to fetch higher prices and help enlarge the TV ad market. Gracenote was originally a music company that was purchased by Sony in 2008. The original service offered by the company helped music services such as iTunes and others identify, scan, and match songs to metadata.

The TV ad replacement system uses a smart TV or set top box running the ad replacement technology. That technology would use video fingerprinting similar to the company’s music technology to identify what the viewer is watching and when the show was about to show a commercial. This is also integrated with data about gender, age, income, and whether you rent or own your home.

All that data is used to determine what TV commercials would be most appealing to you. Once the tech chooses the best commercial for you, it’s delivered via an IP-based delivery engine and a version of the Opera browser overlays the new ad over the default commercial aired on TV. The browser then automatically closes when the commercial finishes and returns you to the show you are watching. I can’t imagine advertisers running nationwide campaigns on popular shows appreciating a company co-opting their ad space like this.
