Scouting for a decent man on campus required a great deal of focus. You had to see past the sprinting engineering students, the slouching athletes and the arguing SIPA grads and try and find the prospects with an ounce of charm.

Kupa X15 Windows 8 tablet gets production ready, now on sale starting at $1,100
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhen we first saw the Kupa UltraNote back at MobileCon 2012, the convertible Windows 8 slate had all the markings of a reference design: NFC, fingerprint scanner, LTE, digitizer and Intel Core i7 processor. But production realities change things some, and now that this particular tab is finally on sale, a few of its specs have been swapped out. Starting at $1,100 and rebadged as the X15, this 10.1-inch slate still reps a 1,920 x 1,200 IPS display, dual 1.3-megapixel front-facing / 5-megapixel rear cameras, support for WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, as well as up to 128GB SSD, but now comes in four configurations. Most notably, its allotment of DDR3 RAM’s been doubled to 8GB across the board, although users seeking that previously announced Ivy Bridge Core i7 will have to opt for the high-end Ultra model as the lesser Elite, Pro and Lux builds all feature an Intel Core i5. LTE support seems to have been dropped altogether in favor of HSPA+ connectivity on the Ultra and Lux units. If you’re interested in what Kupa’s selling here, you’ll need to contact the company directly — there’s no easy link on its site to simply purchase the X15 tablet outright.

Nico Vega: Wooden Dolls
Posted in: Today's Chili If you’ve seen one of the more recent trailers for BioShock Infinite or Jack Reacher, then you’ve probably heard Nico Vega though you might not have heard of them before that. I randomly stumbled onto this video shortly after it dropped on YouTube in early 2009. And they’ve been one of my favorite bands ever since. More »

Apple frequently has issues producing enough new devices to meet demand, and with the iPad mini it’s been no different. A new report from DigiTimes claims that Apple will sell 8 million iPad minis in Q4 2012, despite the fact that the company’s manufacturing partners have the parts for 10-12 million iPad minis ready to ship. The problem? Screen yields still aren’t where they should be, which is preventing Apple from shipping more iPad minis this quarter.
It would seem that screen yields are getting better though, as Q1 2013 is expected to be a bigger quarter for Apple. DigiTimes’ sources claimed that the company will be able to sell a very impressive 13 million iPads in the first quarter of next year. With that in mind, yield quality should start ramping up pretty quickly.
Apple has similar stock issues after the launch of the iPhone 5, which was sold out most places after it was released. If the report from DigiTimes is accurate, then Apple might be able to catch up with demand in Q1 2013. However, it probably still isn’t a bad idea to remain skeptical until we have some actual proof that yields are increasing rather than just the word of an anonymous source.
This one doesn’t seem too far outside the realm of possibility though, as increasing iPad mini shipments is probably near the top of Apple’s to-do list. We wouldn’t be surprised if Apple was putting some extra pressure on its partners to increase yields, which would therefore increase overall shipments and make everyone happy. We’ll just have to see what happens in Q1 of next year, so stay tuned.
