Panasonic P-02E smartphone appears in the FCC flesh, looks Japan-bound

Panasonic P02E smartphone appears in FCC flesh, looks to be Japanbound

Earlier this month, a supposed Panasonic P02-E smartphone popped up on an NTT DoCoMo Japanese server log, but such scant evidence required more than a few grains of salt to swallow it. Now, the ever-reliable FCC has revealed the device to be an actual thing, and putting the two sources together would make it a 5-inch, 1,920 x 1080, Android 4.1.2 smartphone with a quad-core, 1.5GHz APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, along with LTE and NFC capability. Don’t get too excited if those specs float your boat, however — judging by the retractable TV antenna, NTT DoCoMo origins and general Panasonic elusiveness in the west, it looks to be aimed squarely at the Japanese market only.

GM to differentiate SUV and truck designs with 2014 models

If you know anything about SUVs and trucks from General Motors, you’ll know that the company has largely been replicating their designs so that certain SUVs and trucks match each other. However, starting with their 2014 models, GM will be giving each of its vehicles a unique look to separate them from the pack.

GM_Exterior

The company has announced that they’re dropping the cookie-cutter approach to the interiors and exteriors of its full-size SUVs and pickup trucks, beginning with the redesigned 2014 models. We already took a look at the 2014 Silverado and Sierra from Chevrolet and GMC, respectively, but it looks like 2014 SUVs, like the Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon, will look a bit different this time around.

Chris Hilts, creative manager of interior design at General Motors, says that in the past, the company has “shared SUV and truck interiors. That is not the case going forward.” When the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Suburban, the GMC Yukons, and the Cadillac Escalades get their redesigns for 2014, they’ll be getting their own instrument panels, consoles, instrumentation, knobs, materials, and other design elements.

Previously, the Escalades and Yukons shared similar door panels, but since these two vehicles have different prices ranges that cater towards different types of people, GM thought it was necessary to finally give each of their SUVs a unique look that differentiated from one another. Essentially, GM says that a 2014 Silverado and a 2014 Tahoe will look completely different, and won’t have similar qualities that the two vehicles have shared for so long.

Windows 8 Preview Versions Expire On January 15 2013

windows8 Windows 8 Preview Versions Expire On January 15 2013It is a known fact that Windows 8 finally went on sale a couple of months back, but even so, you cannot rule out a certain segment of computer users who might be running one of the three previously released free preview versions of Windows 8. If you happen to fall under that segment, then take note – the amount of time you will spend with Microsoft’s most recent operating system will soon come to an end, just like all good things in life. All three preview builds of Windows 8 (Developer, Consumer and Release) are set to expire on January 15th next year. Originally, the Developer Preview was meant to expire even earlier – specifically on April 8th this year, but Microsoft’s patch that rolled out prior helped extend its date to January 15th in 2013.

Once the calendar hits January 16th, the preview versions will inform users by sending a message that says it will restart Windows each hour until a new product activation key is entered. Definitely one way to “force” an upgrade by being annoying, don’t you think so? Well, as long as it gets the job done, I suppose.

Vending Machines Act As Calorie Counters Now

calorie vending Vending Machines Act As Calorie Counters NowDo you think that we are a nation who is obsessed with counting calories? After all, simple mathematics are supposed to follow, where one should burn more calories than one takes in order to lose weight. Well, we have long seen calories listed for the meal that we are about to partake, especially in the fast food realm, and it seems that the battle of the bulge is taking on a more prominent role, as additional restaurants and vending machines, in this case, will display calorie counts.

The thing is, displaying the amount of calories in that burger or chocolate bar that you have been craving for all this while might not even cause you to pause for a moment, and it seriously does make one wonder whether it will lead to us changing our eating habits. What do you think? Will vending machines that display calories actually work in trimming down the kind of food you take? Perhaps there should be some sort of touchscreen interactive display that shows off the effect of accumulated fat after a few years to scare you away…

Samsung ChatON For Android Updated But Broken

chaton Samsung ChatON For Android Updated But BrokenIn what was supposed to be a celebration that saw Samsung introduce the ChatON update for their range of Android-powered smartphones turned out to be a bummer of sorts, as the update more or less screwed up ChatON. In other words, users are unable to have it synchronize because of some sort of network error, and hopefully, Samsung will be able to sort this particular mess out within the shortest time possible.

Basically, the ChatON app is Samsung’s multi-platform messenger solution, and you will be able to download it from the Google Play Store or via Samsung Apps. It is said that one of the biggest improvements in this particular update would be the ability to synchronize with the Samsung account. Just how does that work? Well, users with the same Samsung account will be able to locate all of the chats and buddy list synchronized with up to 5 different connected devices, in addition to having improvements made to My Page, not to mention being able to send multiple images simultaneously, amongst others.

BlackBerry X10 QWERTY touch smartphone leaked in single white-case photo

There appears to be a whole new double-down in the BlackBerry 10 universe this week with a leaked image of what’s being called the BlackBerry X10. This device sits in a photo near the BlackBerry Z10 all-touch smartphone as well as the BlackBerry Dev Alpha C smartphone given to 1,500 developers earlier this year. This photo is fairly clear, but of course completely unofficial and unconfirmed by RIM.

What we’re seeing here is a device that’s extremely similar in styling to the HTC device revealed in 2011 that went by the name ChaCha – have a peek at our HTC ChaCha review from June of 2011 to have a peek. We’ve also got a photo of the ChaCha below – look similar to you? Both devices are said to be working with full QWERTY physical keyboard action as well as a full touchscreen interface – this being great for the new workings of BlackBerry 10.

It’s not everyday that we see a leak so substantial as the one we’re seeing today in a single photo – and what with previous leaks of the other two devices we’re seeing here, substantiation is a near-fix. This should very well be the image that allows you to see the imminent future of the BlackBerry 10 platform, at least at the start. Both QWERTY and full-touch are onboard and it’s about to get wild!

You’ll be able to see the full experience starting on the 30th of January when we head to the official BlackBerry 10 event. This event will have us getting hands-on time with the final market build of the software as well as our first official glimpses as the first wave of BlackBerry 10 hardware from RIM. Stick with SlashGear for all your up-to-the-second hands-on in-person coverage from here until then – and beyond!

DIY Doctor Who TARDIS Model Actually Made Bigger on the Inside

Next to its modest exterior, the second most notable thing about the time and space machine in Doctor Who is that it’s way bigger on the inside. It’s relatively easy to make a model or even a life-sized replica of its facade, but a clever fellow has managed to make a tiny TARDIS that looks bigger on the inside.

tardis augmented reality replica by greg kumparak

The replica was made by writer/DW fan/clever fellow Greg Kumparak. Initially he just wanted to make a small model of the TARDIS out of wood. After adding a working light on its roof, Greg thought he was really done with the project when an idea came to him: add an interior. Which is why he ended up not making an interior – at least, not a real one. I don’t want to spoil Greg’s neat handiwork, so just watch the video below to see what he did.

Teleport to Greg’s website for more details about his cool project.

Boeing’s Concept SUGAR Plane Plugs In Like a Prius

In November of 2011, American commercial airlines consumed 48.3 million gallons of fuel—every day—and paid a total of $49.8 billion that month to do so. And with increasingly tight operating budgets, fuel efficiency has quickly become a primary concern for the airlines. Boeing thinks one possible solution is its new plug-in hybrid jet concept that burns 70 percent less gas per flight with the help of the local power grid. More »
