Samsung teases 'whole new Smart Hub' on Flickr feed, CES launch confirmed

Samsung’s HDTV-based Smart Hub is set to land a major refresh at CES, according to a trio of images and a product description that appeared on Flickr this evening. Like previous iterations, the software interface will provide access to real-time TV broadcasts, on-demand flicks, apps and photos, according to the site’s image captions. The new version will feature a new background design, along with a “simplified” UI. While the on-screen interface appears to be new, the screen shot is presented atop last year’s Series 8 model, including an identical stand and a built-in camera up top — there’s no hint at what hardware advances we may see in Vegas early next year. Samsung’s CES press conference is on the books for the afternoon of Monday, January 7th, so we have less than two weeks to go before this new UI — and a whole lot of HDTVs — becomes official.

Update: The Global Samsung Tomorrow blog has revealed a few more details, describing how everything will be split into five categories: On TV (live), Movies & TV Shows (VOD), Apps, Social, and finally Photos, Videos & Music. A “Flipping” function will page through the categories one after the other, hit the source link for all the details currently available.

Samsung Slaps Ericsson With Its Own Request For U.S. Sales & Import Ban

ericsson Samsung Slaps Ericsson With Its Own Request For U.S. Sales & Import BanAn eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Following Ericsson’s decision to file a lawsuit against Samsung in November, which eventually resulted to a request to ban U.S. import on some products, the South Korean technology giant is now suing back the former. Samsung said on Wednesday that it has filed a complaint to the International Trade Commission accusing Ericsson of breaching seven of its patents. Samsung is also requesting a U.S. sales and import ban on a few of the Swedish company’s products. (more…)

Loop Mummy iPhone 5 case Review

It’s time to take another peek at one of the strangest and surprisingly year-round-appropriate cases for the iPhone, that being the Loop “Mummy”. We’ve had a look at this case as it resided on the iPhone 4/4S, now it’s time to see how well the Loop team made the concept fit with the iPhone 5. This case is made not just for Halloween, but for all seasons in which you want to get fashionable with silicone on your iPhone – and with a few card-holding bandages to boot.

This case comes in an appealingly large amount of different colors, the one we’re having a peek at this week being the Neon Blue. You can also get this case in Black, Graphite, Magenta, Purple, Powder Blue, Orange, Neon Green, Red, and White. The folks at Loop also offer up both single cases and bundles of three, with a discount occurring to the tune of $15 for three – that’s $60 USD where otherwise you’d pay $25 for one.

They’ve got custom packs (choose your own three) or pre-made packs including Aqua Thunder, Chicago, El Diablo, Good n Plenty, Greyscale, The Hulk, and Urban Camo – see if you can guess which set of three creates each of those bundles. And rest comfortably knowing that each of them, made with the same mold of course, fits the iPhone 5 perfectly. The design for this case improves over the Mummy we inspected for the iPhone 4/4S as well, with slightly more perfected sizings on the holes for the mute / display lock switch and moving forward with the Lightning port at the bottom of the device with a bit more form-fitting an amount of silicone to keep the case tight.

The usability of the case as a card holder is still ever-so-questionable. Not because it doesn’t work – it certainly does hold a few cards if you want it to, securely, too. Instead it’s not a realistic sort of situation for any modern card-holding citizen. Where there’s one, there’s 20 – and I can’t fit 20 in this case, that’s for certain. If on the other hand you’re a minimalist and want to skip the wallet because you’ve got only digital money and a driver’s license, this case/card holder is the one for you!

Plex desktop app becomes Plex Home Theater, adds AirPlay and HD audio

Plex desktop app becomes Plex Home Theater, adds AirPlay and HD audio

Plex wants us to settle in for some holiday viewing in front of our home theater PCs, and to that effect it’s delivering a major beta update to its desktop app — including a new name. The more clearly defined Plex Home Theater syncs up with the XBMC 12 beta and simplifies Plex’s own update process. For those in the living room, shifting to the newer base brings AirPlay streaming from nearby Apple-friendly gear as well as 10-bit H.264 video and HD audio. Behind-the-scenes updates bring more efficient video rendering and fix some older bugs, such as audio sync with SD footage. The catch to enjoying all this? As the upgrade is pre-release code, Plex is limiting early access to PlexPass subscribers. Media mavens still willing to pay the premium can check out the source link for an upgrade to their end-of-year movie marathons.
