The moon marks 40 years without a human visitor, prepares for impending probe crashes
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s likely not an anniversary anyone thought we would meet after the first moon landing, but today marks 40 years since Gene Cernan left the last footprint on the moon as Apollo 17 ended its mission. That was the last of six manned missions to the lunar surface (nine including those that didn’t land), which saw twelve men actually walk on the moon in all. The years since have of course seen continued exploration of the moon through other means, though, and next week will see another major event when NASA’s twin GRAIL spacecraft conduct a planned crash into a mountain near the lunar north pole. Those have been in orbit since January 1st, creating a high-resolution map of the moon’s gravitational field and collecting data that promises to provide more detail than ever about its internal structure and composition. You’ll be able to follow along on NASA’s website as that happens beginning at 5PM Eastern on Monday, December 17th.

Google is so convinced you don’t want to see porn that it started filtering its own search results. Bullshit. Everybody wants porn, and nobody wants to admit it. Except me, of course, I don’t look at that smut. But for the rest of you: It’s time to fess up. More »
It’s here, folks. The next generation of smartphone specs is arriving in the form of faster processors and larger displays. Popular Chinese brand Xiaomi is rumored to be releasing a smartphone with some crazy hardware. We’re talking a quad-core Tegra 4 chip, 2.5GB of RAM, and a 1080p display. We should be seeing devices like this in the next few months anyway, but for now, let’s admire what have here.
Early reports have the Xiaomi M3 pegged for a mid-2013 launch, and more recent reports have unveiled some of the alleged innards of the new device, such as a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 4 chip, which has yet to be announced obviously, but it’s said that it will be capable of clocking in between 1.8GHz and 2.0GHz.
The rumored M3 is also said to receive a larger 4.5-inch display with a 1080p resolution, which would result in a crazy pixel density of 490 PPI, blowing past HTC’s DROID DNA that has a pixel density of 440 PPI. There will also be a 12MP rear camera, and it will run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with MIUI.
Unfortunately, don’t expect these Xiaomi handset to ever make there way stateside, but we can certainly expect similar high-end smartphones to hit the market next year. Of course, these are all just mumblings for now, but it’s definitely no surprise that we’ll see these kinds of phones soon, and maybe CES 2013 will have some on display. Stay tuned.

There are two things we here at Gizmodo love unabashedly: science and beer. So, when we saw that the gang at the UK’s Institute of Physics had launched a site about the physics of beer, we just had to invite them to come for a chat. More »
Bing brings new social sidebar to the iPad, helps you see who’s been looking for what
Posted in: Today's ChiliBing’s desktop version recently underwent a bit of a makeover and Microsoft has now added its search engine’s new social sidebar for the iPad’s Safari users. Upon performing a web search, folks will have access to a side pane displaying related results from the likes of Facebook, Foursquare, Klout and Twitter. Supporting both portrait and landscape formatting, the updated design is set to gradually roll out over the next few days. Just in time for you to check out who’s going to see The Hobbit in 48fps this weekend when searching for showtimes and theaters.

The entire point of technology is to work to our benefit, not against us. The entire point of being a responsible, reasoned human being is to face our failings head-on, not to hide from them. Those points seem inarguable. More »
It’s that time of year again; Google’s leading its ostensibly lonely and unloved services out to pasture. This time Google Sync, and some more obscure calender options are headed for that big cloud storage unit in the sky. More »
Walking Dead fans have a lot to get excited about. With the series more popular than ever here in the middle of the third season, AMC will likely be renewing the series for another season, meaning more dramatic zombie action for addicted fans. It gets even better though, as AMC has announced that it will be re-airing every episode from the first and second seasons in black and white.
AMC already tried this with the pilot episode, and apparently the response was so great that the company decided to give the first two seasons the black and white treatment. This should also sit well with fans of the comic book, as that is produced in black and white too. This news come from Glen Mazzara, who works on the series and tweeted an image of the announcement.
AMC is set to begin airing these black and white episodes in February 2013, which just so happens to be the same month that season 3 is scheduled to resume. So, it would appear that Walking Dead fans have a lot to look forward to in February, but now the problem is actually waiting for February to arrive. If you need something Walking Dead-related to fill the space, you might to give the episodic Walking Dead video game a spin.
The Walking Dead game has received a lot of praise from critics ever since the first episode launched, and it recently won Game of the Year at the Spike Video Game Awards. The full series of five episodes is available on Steam for $24.99, so Walking Dead die-hards are encouraged to give it a look. Are you excited to hear that the first two seasons of The Walking Dead will be re-aired in black and white?
