Intel cable and web TV system tipped for CES reveal

Intel is readying a set-top box mixing on-demand streaming media, free cable content, and a virtual DVR, sources in the video industry claim, with the first-gen hardware tipped for preview as soon as CES 2013 next week. The new push for a slice of the living room follows Intel’s apparent frustration with the failure of first-gen Google TV boxes powered by its chips; according to TechCrunch’s tipster, the company has grown tired of “everyone doing a half-assed Google TV so it’s going to do it themselves and do it right.”

According to another source inside of Intel itself, an early version of the STB will be brought to CES next week, with a preview of the system tipped for its January 7 press event. However, it may be some time before the hardware actually arrives under your TV, with Intel supposedly eyeing a progressive roll-out rather than attempting to sweep across the US in a simultaneous launch.

That’s an apparent workaround to traditional content owner reluctance to “unbundle” the packages of cable channels usually offered, something which has scuppered Apple plans, among others, to help cord cutters get solely the channels they’re most interested in. Packaging channels together is a good way for content owners to keep licensing fees buoyant, especially given many of those tempted to abandon paid cable service are reluctant to miss out on certain sports, media, or other shows.

Intel’s approach will supposedly be on a city-by-city basis, initially focusing on areas where content providers have less lucrative deals with cable companies, and hoping to demonstrate that a more flexible licensing approach might also make sense financially. Such a rollout will begin “soon” according to the tipster, though there’s nothing more specific.

As for functionality, in addition to free cable content and select pay-TV content depending on what Intel can pry out of licensees, there’ll be internet-streamed shows such as from Redbox and other services. Intel also aims to offer a DVR system which would allow recall of any show aired within the past month, across any channel the individual user has subscribed to: rather than having to pre-emptively record a show, it would simply be served up on-demand.

Chatter of an Intel set-top box and accompanying service began back in March, with reports that the chip company aimed to have the system up and running before 2012 was through. Subsequent leaks tipped a complex viewer-monitoring cable box that could give more precise demographic data as to who was watching which services, to show more accurate and relevant adverts, and generally make up for any losses incurred through channel unbundling by increasing overall advertising revenue. “They’ve told us the technology is going to be so much more interactive with ads that you can make more money” one anonymous TV industry executive said at the time.

Google TV had promised to do something along those lines, but Intel’s partnership with Google faltered after early hardware from Logitech and Sony met with mediocre response in the market. Earlier this year, Google announced it would support low-cost, low-power ARM processors with Google TV, though despite more affordable hardware as a result, the platform is yet to take significant market share from more traditional TV entertainment sources.

The ViVAX Laptop Case Is As Rugged As It Gets

macbook Case The ViVAX Laptop Case Is As Rugged As It GetsWhile most laptop bags are good enough at protecting our laptops from slight bumps and short drops, they might not be as adequate if you needed to bring your laptop into rough terrain where there’s a good chance your bags could be dropped onto rocks or soaked in water. If you’re after such protection for your laptop then you might be interested in the ViVAX Kickstarter project. Made in Italy, as you can see in the image above, the ViVAX laptop case is shaped like a suitcase and is reminiscent of those suitcases where spies and government agents carry in movies.

Its creators claim that the case is crushproof, waterproof, shockproof and even dirtproof. This is thanks to the materials used, such as a waterproof external shell and a shockproof techno-polymer interior, with the shell supposedly being of military origin used to transport various sensitive equipment in all sorts of climatic conditions. To add to its waterproof-ness, the case has a Neoseal rubber seal which conforms to NATO standards with regards to being waterproof and even unsinkable. The ViVAX case is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter and a pledge of £59 will net you the case upon successful funding. Even if you don’t require all its protection, it looks pretty cool and its asking price seems pretty reasonable. Learn more about the ViVAX case or pledge a donation on its Kickstarter page.

BlackBerry10Z103 Additional Blackberry 10 Z10 Photos Surface

There’s nothing new to see except that these are some pretty clear photos of the handset, and interestingly the image of the iPhone above is said to be a photo taken by the Z10’s camera! Since the cameras on Blackberry phones don’t exactly jump to mind when we talk about smartphone cameras, we’re sure that many are wondering how the Z10’s camera handles, and assuming the image above has indeed been taken by the Z10, we have to say that we are suitably impressed! What do you guys think? In the meantime you can check out the additional photos of the Z10 below.

More Canon EOS 3D Rumors Surface

canon eos3da More Canon EOS 3D Rumors SurfaceWe’re sure some of you guys might have heard rumblings of a possible Canon EOS 3D camera. The name is most likely not going to be the final name since “3D” would imply it can capture three dimensional images, but until we hear otherwise that’s going to be the name for now. According to the folks at Northlight, they claim to have gotten more information about the alleged device, claiming that the EOS 3D will be sport a whopping 50MP+ image sensor. The sensor is also expected to be found in the Canon EOS 7D MK II which has been rumored for a possible announce in February 2013. Northlight also claims that the EOS 3D will probably see an announcement in late 2013 or possibly in 2014. Since there is nothing else to go on but this, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now, but in the meantime what do you guys think about a Canon DSLR camera with massive megapixels? Yay or nay?

US ITC Judge Recommends Import And Sales Ban Of Samsung Products

US ITC Judge Recommends Import And Sales Ban Of Samsung ProductsA few months ago Apple scored a pretty big win over Samsung when a jury in California ruled in Apple’s favor, ruling that Samsung should pay Apple over a billion dollars in damages. Now it looks like Samsung will be dealt another blow as an US ITC judge has recommended that Samsung’s products should be banned from being sold and imported into the US, claiming that these products have infringed upon some of Apple’s patents. The judge has also recommended that Samsung post a bond of 88% of the value of some of the devices that were named in his recommendation.

However it should be noted that this is merely a recommendation by a judge and it will require approval of the six-member ITC commission, so nothing is set in stone just yet. At the same time the judge has approved several workarounds that Samsung has created which should help clear the products of any patent infringements, at least as far as Apple’s patents are concerned. The phones that could be affected by the judge’s recommendation include the Samsung Transform, Acclaim, Indulge and Intercept.

Signal Strength Of The Nokia Wireless Charging Pad Put To The Test

Do you think wireless charging has practical use or do you see it as mere novelty? We’ve seen how some users have taken it upon themselves to install wireless chargers onto tables and shelves, but in the case of Nisse Tuta, he wanted to see just how “strong” the Nokia wireless charging pad was and decided to place it in several situations to see whether it would still charge his Lumia 920. Basically what he did was he put the wireless charging pad in/under a variety of objects, such as a sock, a comic book, a plastic chopping board, a Blu-ray case and a stainless steel cooking pot. You will be pleased to know that if you’re the sort whose desk is strewn with books and whatnot, the wireless charging pad should still be able to charge your Lumia device. Placing it under the stainless steel pot, however, did not work. In any case you can check out his video above and let us know what you think in the comments below!

‘Sister Wives’ Finale: Logan Leaves For College, Becomes First Child To Move Out (VIDEO)

It was a major milestone for Logan and the entire Brown family on the season finale of “Sister Wives.” Logan was getting ready to head off for college, making him the first of the large clan to move away from home. Patriarch Kody was struggling with the emotions of the occasion.

“I’m mixing these two emotions,” he said. “This excitement that he has to get out and see the world, coupled with my melancholy.”

As a going-away present, the family all signed their names on a “virginity quilt.” The quilt had pictures of all of their faces on it as well, and was intended to serve as a reminder for Logan to maintain his virginity until marriage.

Alleged Motorola Droid RAZR M HD Specs Revealed

motorola droid razr m review 10 640x424 Alleged Motorola Droid RAZR M HD Specs RevealedMotorola released the Droid RAZR M not too long ago, although it looks like the company has plans to launch a HD version of it just like they did with the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX. According to the folks at Phone Arena, they claim to have gotten a tip about a certain Droid RAZR M HD that Motorola might have up their sleeves, possibly in time for CES or MWC 2013 which is around the corner. Based on the specs supplied their source, the Droid RAZR M HD will feature a 4.5” 720p HD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor and interestingly it seems that the Droid RAZR M HD will sport a whopping battery at 3,300mAh – rather surprising considering that such large batteries were typically reserved for the RAZR MAXX series.

Then again assuming this information is true, that’s probably a good thing! The rest of the specs are pretty much standard fare and it should come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. We’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but considering there are HD versions of the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to think that the RAZR M could be given the same treatment.

BlackBerry 10 Device Hits The FCC

bb10 fcc BlackBerry 10 Device Hits The FCCAt the end of January next month, we will be seeing at least one very cool new smartphone in the market, where you can say that it is RIM’s last stand where their Blackberry brand name is concerned. The BlackBerry 10 platform will be launched then, and we do hope to see some pretty cool hardware end up as part of the equation. Well, the folks over at the FCC have apparently put an unnamed BlackBerry device that sports a RFF91LW model number through the paces, while giving their collective nods of approval for it to play nice with AT&T’s LTE and GSM bands, in addition to a few other international frequencies, of course.

This handset’s label sample has been censored (how convenient), but the FCC reports do point that there were, at a minimum, three different devices from RIM which were powered by BlackBerry OS 10.0.9. Could these FCC-approved handsets actually be the “L-series” BlackBerry Z10, or is it a false lead in the sense where it is part of the Dev Alpha device range that RIM dished out to developers? Stay tuned to find out.
