Human Rights Day Celebrated By Activists Around The World (PHOTOS)

NEW YORK — The United Nations marked Human Rights Day on Monday by declaring that everyone has the right to be heard and to shape the decisions that affect their lives and communities.

“International law is clear: No matter who you are, or where you live, your voice counts,” U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said in his message for the day.

What Is This?

The first time I saw this photo at the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton space telescope site I couldn’t believe my eyes. It didn’t look like any space structure I’ve seen before. It actually look like some kind of weird inter-dimensional portal. More »

9 Badass Movie Characters That Finally Have Their Own Action Figures

It really wasn’t until George Lucas came along with Star Wars in the late 1970s that movie tie-ins, particularly action figures, became a big part of a film’s marketing push. As a result you can get a miniature version of your favorite character from most films these days, but that wasn’t always the case. More »

Darpa Introduces Injectable Foam To Stop Internal Bleeding

It’s almost inevitable for a soldier to assume he may be severely injured one day during their tour of duty as danger can be found nearly anywhere. When a soldier receives internal injuries, stabilizing them for transportation is vital to their survival, but very difficult to accomplish in the middle of a battlefield.

Darpa has introduced its Wound Stasis System that uses an injectable foam to stop internal bleeding. The foam can be administered to the injured soldier by way of an injection that combines two liquids. When the liquids combine, it produces a foam that expands 30 times its original volume and solidifies to stop the internal bleeding in order to move the soldier to receive proper medical care. Once the solider is safe and can be taken care of, surgeons can remove the foam in less than a minute with very few fragments left behind.

The foam has received extensive testing and has been known to stop severe hemorrhaging for up to three hours with the survival rate at the three-hour mark increasing from eight percent to 72 percent.

We’re curious to find out what the survival rate would be if Darpa’s foam was administered into our bodies after a paper cut. If we had to guess, probably 100% to 100%. Either way, we want to be injected with this stuff ASAP!

Marshall Hanwell Anniversary Edition amp gives your smartphone a tune-up

If there’s one thing we’ve liked about Marshall over the past year (not that there’s just one, of course), it’s that they’re able to present a whole new angle on the mobile music world by simply implementing the aesthetics they’ve already got in place for on-stage audio. What you’ve got here is the release of the Marshall Hanwell Anniversary Edition amplifier, made specifically for your smartphone and bearing the distinction of being the very first home audio product to be released with “Marshall’s legendary script logo.”

That’s just a fancy way of saying it’s the first Marshall speaker out that’s not an amp for a guitar, basically. If what we’ve seen and heard with the Marshall headphones we’ve reviewed already is any indication, we’re about to see some epic sound coming from this lovely beast too, not just fancy looks. Plug your device in the top with the included headphone jack-sized cord and pump it up!

This beast is what’s called a Compact Active Loudspeaker if you want to get technical about it, coming with two 6-inch Long Throw hifi woofers, two Ferrofluid Cooled hifi domes, and a PWM Amplifier at 100W (cool running). This machine offers over temperature protection and frequency response along 35HZ-20KHZ +/-5DB. Along the top you’ve got both bass and treble tone controls and your main output is a fantastic 110DB SPL@1M.

This Marshall Hanwell Anniversary Edition machine is approximately 435 X 193 X 297MM / 17.15 X 7.60 X 11.70-inches large and weighs in at a cool 23 pounds. The casing for this amalgamation of sound amplification is a wooden cabinet covered with black vinyl with fret cloth up front and gold piping throughout to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Marshall. Each of these Hanwell units is branded with a numbered anniversary edition commemorative badge as well.

You can find this machine on the market immediately if not soon for a cool $800 USD. Expect it in your Christmas stocking only if you’ve got one massive foot.

Zink slips WiFi-enabled ‘Print’ printer into the FCC’s database

Zink slips WiFienabled 'Print' printer into the FCC's database

Last time we heard from Zink, it was introducing some sort of digital camera in concert with Lady Gaga. Perhaps not-so-coincidentally, that was unveiled at CES earlier this year. If we’re assuming a yearly refresh cycle, it looks as if the company is planning its next major product launch for CES 2013, judging by a report of a new piece of kit that just surfaced at the FCC today. Simply entitled “Print” (or “Happy Print,” as the documentation occasionally states), the (presumed) printer will support 802.11b/g/n WiFi transfers, though there’s a USB option for those who prefer the tethered route. We also get the feeling it can be powered via an included battery pack, enabling IRL Instagrams to be printed out right there on location. There’s no user guide to speak of, so further functionality is apt to be kept under wraps until its official reveal. If we had to guess, we’d say that day is coming soon rather than later.

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War joins Humble THQ Bundle

The Humble THQ Bundle has just two days left before coming to a close, and it’s apparently looking to go out with a bang. The bundle was already an excellent offering that brought together some of THQ‘s biggest titles for some name-your-price insanity, but the deal just got even sweeter with the addition of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Game of the Year Edition. The game, as many of you are aware, is the first title in THQ’s much-loved Dawn of War series, and it is now available to those who pay more than the average of $5.64.

Of course, if you’ve already purchased the Humble THQ Bundle, you don’t have to do anything other than head to your download page, where a code for the game will be waiting for you. The addition of Dawn of War brings the total number of games up to seven, and that isn’t even counting the expansions that are included in the bundle. You get to name one price for all of them too, which makes this one of the best gaming deals of the year.

Unsurprisingly, the Humble THQ Bundle has managed to bring in more than $4.3 million, with that money being split between THQ, Child’s Play, the American Red Cross, and the folks who put these bundles together. Those who purchase the bundle get to determine how much of their money goes where, and are given Steam codes for the games they purchase. Soundtracks for five of the games are included in each bundle purchase as well, so there’s a lot of content crammed into this latest Humble Bundle.

With nearly 770,000 bundles sold amd two days left to go, we wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the Humble THQ Bundle manages to break $5 million by the time everything is said and done. Needless to say, we think this is a pretty great idea and would like to see more publishers opt for a Humble Bundle of their own, even though the chances of that happening seem pretty slim. If you’ve been thinking of picking up the Humble THQ Bundle but haven’t taken the dive yet, you better make your decision quick – things will be winding down here pretty soon, after all.

R2-D2 Wooden iPhone Dock: Help Me Etsy-Wan Kenobi, You’re My Only Hope

You know, it’s funny that with all of the R2-D2 merch I’ve seen over the years, I’ve never envisioned the little maintenance droid in wood. But now that I’ve seen him made out of the stuff, I rather like the way he looks.

r2 d2 iphone dock 2

This rustic wooden iPhone dock was handmade by Mario of Valliswood, and bears more than a passing resemblance to R2-D2. He was made using sustainable hardwoods found in the woods of Croatia, and measures about 9 inches-tall, and his head swivels open to dock your iPhone or iPod Touch. I always thought that R2 should have an iPhone dock built into his body somewhere.

You’ll need to provide your own charger cable, but R2 is compatible with the iPhone 3G/3GS, iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5 and iPod devices except the shuffle and new nano. R2 was always such a versatile droid, wasn’t he?

The R2-D2 dock is selling for $210(USD) over on Etsy. If you want him sitting under the Christmas tree this year, you’d better move quick before some sneaky Jawa snatches him up from under your nose.
