Iran launches its answer to YouTube

Watching videos of cats on YouTube when you should be doing other things may be a part of your daily routine, but in some regions of the world, that isn’t possible. As many of you know, countries like Iran like to ban popular websites like YouTube and Facebook for varying reasons, leaving their citizens without access to the aforementioned cat videos. Today, however, Iranians are getting a video streaming site of their own, but don’t expect it to be as open as YouTube is.

That’s because this website, www.mehr.ir, will focus on promoting Islam and Iranian culture. We don’t know how heavily it will be moderated, but you can bet that at least some moderation will going down. After all, it’s hard to imagine that the government will allow any kind of video up on the site, otherwise there wouldn’t be much of a reason to ban YouTube.

It isn’t all that surprising to see a site like this go live, as Iran has been censoring the Internet for quite a while now. YouTube has been censored for a number of years, but web filters don’t always stop Iranians from viewing the banned websites. Apparently the hope here is that people will just visit Mehr, which is headed up by the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, instead of bypassing the filters to hop on YouTube.

We shall see how this all works out, but one encouraging thing is that users are invited to upload their own material, which is a step in the right direction. The IPIB will also be uploading content of its own, so it looks like the organization will have a big role in maintaining (and perhaps moderating) the website.

Official Pokemon Pokedex launches for iOS in USA for hands-on action

Ever since the miniature touchscreen became a normal object for the public to have in their pocket, it’s been the hope and dream of every Pokemon lover to have a Pokedex for their very own – today Nintendo made it a reality. Though we’ve had quite a few knock-off versions of the one true Pokedex from the Pokemon video game for smart devices galore before, it’s not been until today that the official Pokemon crew has brought on the real deal to iOS – and what a beast it is! But don’t think for a second that such a greatness will be free – on the contrary!

The initial Pokedex app will cost you $1.99 USD – this gets you what’s called the “Unova Pokedex” listing of pocket monsters number 494 through 647. After that, you’ll have to pay an additional amount for each of the other regions. We’re less than excited about the cost, mind you – and in a rare move that we rarely, very rarely make, we’re going to go ahead and suggest that you skip the full purchase here.

If you absolutely, positively must have the full Pokemon collection on this official app, feel free to pay the $5.99 USD (really, for real) for each additional region. That includes the original 001 through 151 with all of your favorites like Pokachu and Mew. If you’re a big fan of the original series, you’ll be paying nearly $8 USD for it – not the best deal on the market. If you do want to check out this Official Pokedex you’ll want to see “The Pokemon Company” developer page – searching for Pokedex without the correct “e” will get you only the 3rd party creations.

For those of you looking for an alternative, there’s more than enough out there that are absolutely free and ready for your download – they might have ads if they’re free, but they’ve got all the information you need if you’re really, really hunting Pokemon out there in the wild. Also if you’re looking for a perfect Pokemon alternative while you wait for the real deal to come to iOS (possibly never), you’ll want to check out GeoSociety – it’s a winner!

Mini Hozuki LED Candle Lantern

I know that having portable, modern day lighting is nothing new, but when you think about it, an old school item can still be rethought and shaped to resemble, or usher in the future. Case in point, the humble lantern. We have seen its evolution in the past, where from being powered by gas or oil, here we are with a LED powered version. Enter the $39.99 Mini Hozuki LED Candle Lantern, which is actually a tiny, highly portable backpacking lantern that is also durable, shining light whenever and wherever you need it.

With multiple lighting modes that will include a couple of candle modes, the Mini Hozuki LED Candle Lantern boasts of a magnetic tail that enables it to wrap around poles and loops, ensuring that your precious Mini Hozuki remains in place right where you need it, letting you concentrate on other more important matters – such as fending off a group of goblins. Still, sometimes I believe that the traditional torch would work much better, since some creatures can only be scared by fire and heat. Powered by a trio of AAA batteries, this portable LED lantern can last up to 40 hours in High Mode.

Pantech Vega IM-A860 Joins Full HD Smartphone Party

The Full HD smartphone is no longer the stuff of legends – in fact, sooner or later, you would find smartphones that have a Full HD resolution display being the norm, while anything less than that would be deemed to be low-end. Of course, at this point in time, all Full HD display smartphones on the Android platform do seem to be their respective flagship models of different smartphone manufacturers, and the Pantech Vega IM-A860 is no different, coming in the Vega IM-A860S and IM-A860L flavors. Chances are these will be codenames for SK Telecom and LG U+, which are a pair out of the trio of major carriers in South Korea.

So far, the Pantech Vega IM-A860 has been seen in GLBenchmark’s database, and in the process received Wi-Fi certification, so chances are pretty high (with expectations running so) that a formal launch is right on track. Still, perhaps it is too optimistic to expect a Full HD Pantech Vega to make its way to the market before 2012 is over, so a CES announcement does seem to be the more reasonable conclusion.

HTC Android Jelly Bean Device Update List Leaked

Each release of the latest version of the Android operating system from Google will always elicit different reactions for various folks. Users would ask phone manufacturers just when their particular model would receive the newest version of Android, if possible, and manufacturers would look to the carriers for an answer. Well, Google’s latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update is no exception, and it seems that somewhere along HTC’s news plumbing system, a leak has sprung up – thanks to a rather trustworthy leak source known as Football4PDA..

Apparently, the following devices from HTC will receive an update to Android Jelly Bean, and they are the HTC One X+ (Evitare), HTC One XL (Evita), HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE (Fireball), HTC EVO 4G LTE (Jewel), HTC One SV (K2), HTC One VX (Totem C2), HTC One S (Ville), HTC One S C2 (Ville C2) and the HTC J ISW13HT (Valente). Needless to say, some of the more notable names (in the past, anyways) like the HTC Desire range do seem to be missing, so no love lost there. Perhaps it is time you made an upgrade to your HTC device?

LG boasts 10 million L-series phones sold

While the Optimus G and the Nexus 4 might be the company’s top products, LG also sells some pretty mean mid-range devices as well, specifically the Optimus L-series. The company first launched its L-series devices at Mobile World Congress back in February, and has since sold 10 million of them. The series consists of four different models, the latest being the flagship L-series handset, the Optimus L9.

While 10 million isn’t nearly close to Samsung’s 30 million sold with the Galaxy S III, calling their 10 million achievement a “modest milestone,” LG still loves to boast sales figures. The company says the 10 million mark is “proof that many consumers want attractive smartphones with distinctive — not “me too” — styling.”

The L-series consists of the basic Optimus L3, the Optimus L5, the Optimus L7 and the aforementioned Optimus L9. The company promotes these handsets as fashionable alternatives to the sea of all the identical Android phones available to consumers, an argument that LG pushes for with these devices. And while even the L9 isn’t top-of-the-line, it’s a perfect example of a budget handset that performs.

10 million units sold is impressive for any smartphone, but we’re talking about four different handsets that have combined for 10 million sold, which comes down to 2.5 million per model on average. Personally, we’d love to see the breakdown of which L-series smartphone has proven the most popular out of the bunch.

Arduino launches Esplora open source controller

Tinkerers take note, because Arduino has launched its new Esplora controller, which just so happens to be customizable and open source. The Esplora is derived from the Arduino Leonardo, but unlike its predecessors, it comes equipped with a number of sensors and buttons out of the box. That means it should be at least relatively easy to just jump in once your Esplora arrives.

Among other things, the Esplora comes with a temperature sensor, an analog joystick with a central push-button that’s reminiscent of the clickable joysticks on the Xbox 360 and PS3, a set of four push buttons, a three-axis accelerometer, a buzzer, and a microUSB port. On the upper left corner of the controller is where you’ll find the reset button and a group of LED status lights. The Esplora is also expandable, as it features two TinkerKit inputs and outputs, along with a TFT display connector, so you can connect a color LED screen or an SD card.

Since the board is already equipped with everything it needs to run, all you’ll have to do is connect it to a computer using the microUSB port and you’re on your way. Users can program the Esplora using Arduino’s downloadable software, and the company has set up a getting started page for those who are eager to get things moving. It can also appear as a regular old keyboard and mouse when connected to a computer, which means there are potential applications beyond just gaming for the Esplora.

It’s relatively inexpensive too, with the standard edition coming in at €41.90 ($54 US) and the retail edition demanding €44.90 ($58). It should be compatible with all of Arduino’s software as well, so this is one user-friendly controller. Are you planning on picking one of these up?

Motorola To Quit South Korea In 2013

It seems that Motorola Mobility is set to exit the South Korean market next year, which is part of the restructuring process by Google that will involve shedding more than 500 jobs. This reorganization process would mean all of Motorola Mobility’s operations in South Korea will be no more, although the phone manufacturer will retain 10% of its local R&D staff, where this select group will be offered relocation packages. A couple of business units will remain, although the company is said to stop selling and marketing mobile devices.

So far, the company’s global reshuffle has seen it layoff around 4,000 employees thereabouts, followed by closing down majority of their international websites to boot with just three more weeks to go. South Korea was thought to be a safe place at first, being one of the few places to feature a Motorola Mobility research and design center, which will also see its existence come to a close. So far at press time, Motorola Mobility has yet to be able to confirm the exact number of folks who won’t have such a merry Christmas after all.

BBM 7 Update Available

There is a new BBM 7 update in town, so you might want to check it out if you are interested. For those who figured out that when “talking” to someone on BlackBerry Messenger with an explanation in mind, and yet are unable to get your message across unless you speak aloud via a phone call, here is some respite for your wallet. BBM 7 will come with BBM Voice, which is now available in the BlackBerry App World for devices that are powered by BlackBerry 6 OS and higher. For folks running on BlackBerry 5 OS, then you might have to play the patience card.

Do take note that it might take up to 24 hours for the BBM 7 update to be made available in the BlackBerry App World storefront, so remain patient. Basically, BBM 7 allows you to pick just how you connect with your BBM contacts, as it has been specially designed for you to seamlessly make a switch from a BBM message to a BBM Voice call – all without having to pay a single cent, thanks to a decent Wi-Fi connection. Other features in BBM 7 include BBM upgrade notifications and BBID synchronization.
