X-37B Air Force space plane set for mysterious Dec 11 blast-off

US Air Force robo-space plane X-37B will begin its third mission on Tuesday,it’s been confirmed, finally taking a classified payload into Earth orbit after having been delayed by launch rocket safety testing. The flight of the mysterious plane – also known as the Orbital Test Vehicle, or OTV-3 – was intended to take place earlier this year, but plans were frozen after a Delta 4 rocket fault back in October. Exactly what the X-36B is carrying, and how long it will be in orbit for, are unclear.

In fact, the only real purpose of the OTV-3 mission that the Air Force has publicly shared is its demonstration of reusability. The OTV-3 vehicle is actually the same unit as was used as OTV-1, refurbished and redeployed ”to demonstrate a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the United States Air Force.” OTV-1 returned to Earth in December 2010.

The Boeing Government Space Systems made X-37B is 8.8m long and 4.5m wide, with a 2.1 x 1.2m payload system that has been the cause of some controversy. While the Air Force has generally been vague as to its intentions, there has been speculation that the X-37B is intended as a spy platform or even as a space weapons deployment system.

Whatever the payload, the OTV-3 has been grounded for some months now, after a Delta 4 upper-stage engine underperformed during an October GPS satellite launch. Despite the fact that OTV-3 will use Atlas 5 rockets – with different engines – all launches were postponed while the cause of the flaw was hunted down.

“The ULA investigation has concluded that a fuel leak occurred in a specific area of the interior of the thrust chamber” the United Launch Alliance, manufacturer of the Delta 4 and Atlas 5 rockets, said in a statement, “and that this leak started during the first engine start sequence.” Both OTV-1 and OTV-2 were launched using Atlas 5 rockets.

OTV-1 spent 224 days in space, while OTV-2 returned to Earth in June this year after having spent 469 days in orbit. The second mission saw accusations that the autonomous craft was being used to spy on the Chinese Tiangong 1 unmanned spacelab.

Kindle Fire HD Bootloader Cracked With CyanogenMod 10 On The Way

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is one of the first few Kindle models from Amazon that come with a higher resolution display, definitely with a far higher resolution compared to the original Kindle Fire. Unfortunately for those who love to tinker with stuff underneath the hood, the Kindle Fire HD comes with a locked bootloader, making it far harder to replace Amazon’s software with a custom operating system compared to the original Kindle Fire. Still, we humans love a challenge, which is why you do not see anyone giving up just like that.

It seems that hackers have managed to figure out a method to work around the locked bootloader issue, followed by installing the ClockworkMod custom recovery, making life a whole lot more easier and enjoyable for one to load custom firmware on the tablets. Not only that, we have word that an unofficial version of CyanogenMod 10 for the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is already well on its way, being based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Sounds as though Kindle Fire HD owners are in for a whale of a time!

WynCASE iOS Game Case Delivers Physical Buttons

The iPhone and iPod touch, two devices that run on the iOS platform, have managed to carve a name for themselves in the world of portable gaming. Of course, they are not capable of offering the kind of gaming experiences that you find on the triple A titles on the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS, but you know for sure that there is still a fair share of titles on the iOS platform that can keep you captivated for hours on end. Well, a full touchscreen interface is not the most ideal way to game, which is why this Kickstarter idea came about – the WynCASE iOS game case that comes in an extremely slim form factor, sporting actual physical buttons without the need for batteries at all.

This Kickstarter project is a compact protective case that will transform your iOS-powered device into what they call a “true mobile game console.” Thanks to WynLABS patent-pending BridgeTOUCH technology, it will make full use of the touchscreen, minimizing latency to make it ideal for fast-action games. Not only that, it doubles up as a protective case for your iOS device, now how about that? $80,000 is the amount that the WynCASE requires, so you can place your pre-order for $30 a pop.

Scroll Evoke From Storage Options Comes With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Storage Options of the UK has just lifted the veil from their most powerful tablet to date – calling it the Scroll Evoke, which will be making its way to the UK with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in tow. Touted to be their most powerful tablet so far, the Scroll Evoke will cost you a relatively affordable £119.99, sporting a sleek and stylish form factor that is powered by a new dual-core Cortex A9 1.6GHz processor, where its 7” display will be accompanied by 8GB of internal memory. Thankfully, you can further expand that with a microSD memory card slot, paving the way for you to stash your fair share of e-books, music and movies, and other kinds of portable media.

The new Mali-T604 quad core graphics processor in the Scroll Evoke will also be able to shoulder most of the video burdens, and we believe that its attractive price point will definitely make it quite a contender in the highly competitive Android tablet market – even in the UK. If you happen to live in that part of the world, would you pony up that kind of money for the Scroll Evoke, or do you have other tablets in mind that you think would be able to offer you better value for money? Estimates peg the cost for Google Fiber for all of the US at $140 billion

I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s insanely jealous that Kansas City was able to win the Google Fiber project. The speeds people in served areas of Kansas City are able to get for the money is staggering. Kansas City now has some the fastest Internet in all of the US.

If you’re like me and have been holding out hope that Google would roll its insanely fast fiber service out to the rest of the country, those hopes are all but dashed. A new research note from analytics firm Goldman Sachs is estimated it would cost Google $140 billion or more to roll its Fiber service out to the rest of United States. Google, which happens to be one of the wealthiest tech companies out there, has $45 billion cash on hand.

That number is according to Goldman Sachs and is based on the company’s annual CAPEX budget of $4.5 billion. The analytics company also says that even if Google wanted to target only half the homes the US, the rollout of that network could cost as much as $70 billion.

That means Google would have to take out a massive loan to rollout its fiber service to most major markets around the country. Google obviously had some sort of plans for its fiber service or it wouldn’t have undertaken the expense of rolling out a pilot program in Kansas City. I’m still hoping Google might team up with another company or to in rollout crazy fast fiber-optic Internet, TV service, and phone service around the country.

My Little Pony Handgun: Friendship is a Semi-Automatic

We’ve seen a few cute and cuddly weapons in the past, but this handgun is a real rarity. This a semi-automatic handgun from Springfield Armory that features custom Rarity grips. Ha ha. At least we think they are custom grips. Sure, friendship is magic, until you cross a pony. Then that little pony is going to pop a cap in your cutie-marked butt.

mlp gun
Sadly, we don’t have any info on this weapon, but some pony-lover out there is in for a world of hurt. My Little Pony fans who also visit the gun range (I know there must be many of you) will drool over this gun. Others will just want this gun just so they could take down every animated pony they see.

BBM Voice brings WiFi calling to BlackBerry

RIM has released BlackBerry Messenger 7 (BBM 7) complete with BBM Voice support, adding WiFi calling to the popular messaging service. The new app, headed to the BlackBerry App World today, currently works with BlackBerry OS 6 devices and above, and as well as allowing for simple switching between text messages and voice calls, adds several other new features.

There are sixteen new emoticons, shown below, as well as BBM upgrade notifications within the app itself, allowing users to easily switch to each new version. Finally, there’s BBID sync, pulling in the BBM profile, Groups, and Contacts, and linking them to each user’s BlackBerry ID.

It’s BBM Voice which will get the most attention, however, RIM’s attempt to keep the messaging system competitive with rivals such as Apple’s iMessage and Google’s Gchat. A single voice button in the top right hand corner of each text conversation begins a call, directly from the chat itself, rather than forcing the user to go through the contacts app.

RIM says BlackBerry 5 devices will get BBM Voice functionality in the new year, and the calls are free over WiFi. It may take 24hrs or so for the new app to arrive in your local version of the App World, so keep checking.

iPhone 5 drops to $150 in Best Buy promo

Apple’s iPhone 5 has seen a $50 discount, with retailer Best Buy offering the latest-gen smartphone from $149.99 for those signing up to a new, two-year agreement. Both the AT&T and Verizon versions are included in the deal, in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities, though currently the AT&T versions aren’t available for online purchase, only in-store.

Usually, you’d pay $199.99 for a 16GB iPhone 5, $299.99 for a 32GB model, and $399.99 for the 64GB; at Best Buy, those versions come in at $149.99, $249.99, and $349.99 respectively. That’s the same as AT&T would charge you for a refurbished 64GB iPhone 5 – the carrier did, at one point, have $99.99 refurbs, but swiftly sold out of the 16GB model.

Apple’s supply issues around the iPhone 5 have begun to ease, with the company’s own online store now listing the handset as in-stock. That comes after several months of delays following the usual post-launch furore.

In fact, Apple’s strict limiting of iPhone 5 supplies has pretty much come to an end. Not only is the company offering the smartphone SIM-free and off-contract in the US, but it has lifted its block on each customer buying more than two devices at any one time.

Whether Best Buy’s promotion will stick around is unclear, though we’re guessing plenty of people are hoping for a new iPhone 5 under the tree this holiday season.
