James Bond Remote Controlled Stunt Car

So you have watched Skyfall, and came away even more impressed with Danie Craig’s performance as the grittiest Bond to date. Of course, the thrills and spills were there, and there was also a Judge Dredd moment in the movie, not to mention the demise of a major character, but what you really loved Bond for was his suaveness that snagged him many a lady, in addition to the hot rides that he has over the years which enabled him to make an impossible escape once too many times. Enter the $69.95 James Bond Remote Controlled Stunt Car that helps you script your own Bond adventure and living it out – in your imagination.

This radio controlled car will be able to reproduce similar evasive banking maneuvers that were executed by the iconic British Secret Service agent 007. It is a faithful replica of an Aston Martin DBS V12, which ended up as Mr. Bond’s preferred vehicle in the later installments of the famous espionage movie series (after BMW’s time was up, thankfully). This unique ride comes with a tiny wheel which extends from the right undercarriage at your command, allowing it to lift the right front and rear wheels off the ground so that you can evade obstacles according to your whim and fancy. There is another button on the remote that makes the entire car pop wheelies or shoot up a ramp when the need arises.

Sony and Box extend BFF status, offer 50GB free storage to Xperia owners through 2013

When Sony and Box came together last year to offer Xperia owners a tantalizing deal of 50GB of free storage for life, the promotion was only set to run for a year. Now that shopping season is upon us once more, however, the holiday spirit must’ve moved them to extend the partnership for yet another year — that, or Sony needs any edge it can to move those Xperia devices to consumer hands. Just as with the prior promo, Xperia and Sony tablet users can snag 50 gigs of cloud storage completely gratis just by signing up or tapping into existing Box accounts on their devices before December 31st 2013. However, do note that the offer doesn’t extend to the Xperia X10 mini, the X10 mini pro and anything that has firmware older than Android 2.1. Now that Sony has this going for two years straight, maybe they should extend this to a lifetime scenario, or as long as Box sticks around to offer up that sweet storage in the sky.

Dumb Prisoner Gets Stuck In His Own Wall Hole During Stupid Jailbreak

Four inmates tried to escape through a hole made on their cell’s wall using a metal pipe from the prison’s shower. Unfortunately for them, they were as smart as a bag of hammers: the hole was too small and the second prisoner got stuck, keeping the others inside. More »

Apple and Google reportedly join forces to buy Kodak patents

Apple and Google have a cordial relationship peppered with bouts of sparring and relentless competing for the world’s mobile users. Now the two companies have formed an unlikely – although not surprising – joint effort to acquire Eastman Kodak’s 1,100 patents, according to unnamed sources familiar with the issue. The patents will cost upwards of $500 million, with both companies having already tried acquiring them for lesser amounts independently.

Eastman Kodak filed for bankruptcy back in January of this year, showing $5.1 billion in assets and $6.5 billion in debt. That debt includes a rather hefty $950 million Citigroup loan, which Kodak will pay off in part with the money it makes from the patent sales. If all goes as planned, Kodak anticipates being out of bankruptcy by June 2013.

It is not uncommon for companies to form a group and jointly bid on patents. Before joining up, Apple and Google both led their own groups in pursuit of the patents. Apple was joined by the likes of Microsoft and Intellectual Venture Management LLC, while Google was joined by manufacturers of Android smartphones and the RPX Corporation. The offers for the patents fell between $150 million and $250 million.

Recent examples of companies jointly acquiring patents includes 2011′s band of Apple, RIM, EMC, Sony Ericsson, Microsoft, and Sony shelling out $4.5 billion for 6,000 Nortel Networks patents and patent applications. Google did not offer a comment when questioned about the matter, saying only that it doesn’t comment on rumors. Likewise, Apple has remained silent amidst the speculation.

Researchers develop LCD-based contact lens display

Researchers with Ghent University’s Centre of Microsystems Technology, CMST for short, have developed an LCD-based contact lens display. The LCD-based contact lens offers advantages over its LED-based counterparts, allowing the full display surface to be utilized. There’s a video of the device available after the break.

With LCD-based contact lens displays, a variety of pixel sizes and quantities can be used, and because the entire display surface is utilized, the contact display can serve more functions, such as working as sunglasses. The current prototype is rudimentary, displaying simple patterns, such as the dollar sign visible in the image above. With time, however, as the technology is refined, the contact lens will be able to perform more actions, such as providing adjustable eye color.

The project’s main researcher Jelle De Smet offered this statement. “Normally, flexible displays using liquid crystal cells are not designed to be formed into a new shape, especially not a spherical one. Thus, the main challenge was to create a very thin, spherically curved substrate with active layers that could withstand the extreme molding processes … By using new kinds of conductive polymers and integrating them into a smooth spherical cell, we were able to fabricate a new LCD-based contact lens display.”

Bringing a bit more of a science fiction feel into the equation is also the suggestion that at some point, the contact lens display can also be used to superimpose images into the wearer’s vision. Both cosmetic and medical functions can, theoretically, be provided by the LCD-based contact lens display with later prototypes. For now, researchers are working on refining the technology and while giving us a glimpse into what the future.

Dark Souls 2 announced, destined for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3

Long been the substance of rumors, many a’ gamer’s hopeful speculation has now been confirmed: Dark Souls 2 is official, and it’s heading towards a console near you. The announcement was made at VGA 2012, and a trailer appeared a short while later on YouTube, which has since been removed. Thus far no launch date has been given, but we do know that it will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Software’s Dark Souls is a fantasy RPG, and by the looks of its trailer, the sequel will be just as awesome as the first iteration in the series. The trailer is a pre-rendered low-res video, but it reveals a nice glimpse into the game’s world. Intriguing characters, fiery mountains, dragons, and fatally-wounded characters all make an appearance.

Namco Bandai’s Vice President of Marketing Carlson Choi offered this statement. “Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series. Software is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.”

Intestinal fortitude aside, Dark Souls 2 will present gamers with an “entirely new story” and an expanded world. The sequel will be directed by Tomohiro Shibuya of Monster Hunter fame, and will have the series’ creator Hidetaka Miyazaki overseeing its production. The trailer keeps disappearing as fast as it reappears, so keep your eyes peeled on YouTube, check around, and you’re bound to find a copy before it gets taken down.

Jake Schmidt: Countries Acting At Home to Address Global Warming: The Key Fight Ahead

Empty Plenary Hall Doha.jpgLast year global emissions of carbon pollution rose to record levels, with declines in some key countries but with rising emissions elsewhere offsetting those declines. These are depressing statistics, especially in light of the significant signs of global warming that are already emerging. Some new actions are emerging that will hopefully reduce this growing pollution and set the stage for even stronger action in the very near future. This movement will be supported by progress at the climate negotiations, but real progress will only occur if we win the fights in the capitals, boardrooms, and courtrooms of the key countries.

Some of these battles have been won this year, but more confronts us. Here are some examples of actions by key countries and why it is critical that we succeed on these efforts in the next few years.

John Lennon Death Anniversary: A Look Back At The Beatles’ Love Lives

In 1969, when The Beatles were parting ways, John Lennon told the band: “I’m breaking the group up. It feels good. It feels like a divorce.”

But that’s not the only public split Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and honorary fifth Beatle, George Martin, endured; all of the bandmates have been through divorces in their personal lives, too. In honor of the 32nd anniversary of Lennon’s tragic death on Dec. 8, 1980, we take a look back at the band’s divorces. Click through the slides below for more on their splits.
