Black Boxes To Be Required In New Cars

Black boxes on cars aren’t entirely new. Last year, we wrote to you about a new plan initiated by federal officials to use black boxes on all cars. Well, after months of waiting, it seems that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is on the verge of implementing the use of event data recorders, also called black boxes, in new vehicles. The White House Office of Management Budget has recently reviewed and approved the said proposal. This means that it is now up to the NHTSA to finalize the standard.  (more…)

Xperia extends its partnership with Box into 2013

Sony Ericsson has announced that the partnership between Xperia and Box has been extended for another year, lasting until the end of 2013. This comes after 2011′s year-end announcement of the initial partnership, which lasted one year and was scheduled to end of the 31st of this month. Now Xperia owners who sign up for Box by the end of next year will get 50GB of free lifetime storage space.

Box is a file sharing and cloud storage provider, that, like all other cloud storage providers, allows users to upload files and access them from any location and device with Internet access. Videos, music, documents, pictures, apps, data files, and anything else you can think of can be stored. The Box Android app is available from the Google Play Store.

Back during the initial partnership in 2011, Box’s CEO Aaron Levie had offered this statement. “As more people bring their personal devices in to work to take full advantage of mobile computing, it is essential that they never have to worry about storage limitations. By partnering with Sony Ericsson we are bringing the full power of Box®’s cloud content management and sharing to those users.”

The free 50GB of storage space is not available with the Xperia X10 mini, Xperia X10 mini pro, and any stone age Android device running pre-2.1 versions of the mobile operating system. According to the announcement, more details and a discussion with Box will be available via the Sony Mobile blog in the relatively near future. In the meantime, don’t forget to score your free Box cloud storage if you own an Xperia or receive one during the upcoming holidays.

Sure you could buy an SSD or an iPad mini or a Samsung Galaxy S III but where’s the fun in that? Those gifts would be great and if they’re a self-respecting geek, they should get that themselves. These made up gag gifts by Joy of Tech though? Torturous comedic gold. More »

Woman Sued For Negative Review On Yelp

Watch out for those words, it could cost you thousands of dollars. A woman from Virginia , Jane Perez, wrote a negative review on Yelp. The review was for Dietz Development, a contracting company that apparently worked on Perez’s home. Christopher Dietz, the owner of the company, is now suing Perez for $750,000. In a filing made by Dietz last month, Dietz is accusing Perez of Internet defamation, saying, “Plaintiffs have been harmed by these statements, including lost work opportunities, insult, mental suffering, being placed in fear, anxiety, and harm to their reputations.” (more…)

Bloomberg: Apple and Google teaming up on $500 million-plus bid for Kodak patents

Bloomberg Apple and Google teaming up on $500 millionplus bid for Kodak patents

After Kodak’s auction to offload 1,100 of its digital imaging patents was green-lit this summer, it looked like Apple and Google were ready to do battle for the goods. Now, however, Bloomberg cites a pair of sources who claim that the two titans have ended their face-off and are combining their efforts in a $500 million-plus bid for the patents. All three parties are staying quiet for now, but the move would certainly not be out of form for technology giants when it comes to lucrative, and potentially volatile, patents. Helping Kodak recover from bankruptcy with more cash in its coffers is nice enough, but avoiding a courtroom feud on digital photos is what sweetens the pot all around.

NHTSA expected to propose mandatory black boxes in vehicles

Rumor has it the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is about to propose a regulation that would require EDR (event data recorders), more commonly known as black boxes, to be installed in all new light trucks and cars. The EDRs will be similar to those used in aircraft, and will provide essential data in the event of a crash. If upheld, the requirement will go into effect on September 1, 2014.

Most new vehicles already contain event data recorders, with Ford, GM, Mazda, Toyota, and others all including black boxes in all of their vehicles. The recorders aren’t without controversy, however, and neither is this proposed regulation. Critics express privacy concerns and fear the data collected by the black boxes can be misused.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers’ spokeswoman Gloria Bergquist offered this statement. “Event data recorders help our engineers understand how cars perform in the real world, but looking forward, we need to make sure we preserve privacy. Automakers do not access EDR data without consumer permission, and any government requirements to install EDRs on all vehicles must include steps to protect consumer privacy.”

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is a group composed of Toyota Motor North America, the Volkswagen Group of America, and Mercedes-Benz USA, as well as six other manufacturers. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about black boxes in cars, however. Back in April, we reported on Senate Bill 1813, which would require all vehicles to have black boxes. In 2006, the NHTSA ruled on a standard for black boxes that went into effect in September on 2013 vehicle models.

‘Steve Jobs Patent’ Tentatively Invalidated By USPTO

Back in the glory days, multitouch was the key feature that separated the iPhone from the rest. Nowadays, however, the tables are beginning to turn, and Apple is somewhat forced to unleash the troll within, in a bid to preserve thy “precious” patents. One of them is the so called “Steve Job patent,” which basically covers the several key multitouch features on iOS including scrolling, swipes, and pinches. You can recall that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) previously issued a “non-final” ruling on the said patents that declares some of them to be invalid. Fiscal Cliff: Lawmakers See Plunge Before Agreement

WASHINGTON — Fewer Republicans are saying “no” to raising taxes on the rich. But it still may be after the nation starts sliding into the fiscal abyss before enough of them are willing to say “yes” to a tax deal with Democrats, numerous lawmakers told The Huffington Post.

In fact, the negotiations are beginning to remind some in Congress of last winter’s battle over extending the popular payroll tax cuts when Tea Party conservatives revolted at a GOP leadership proposal, only to come back and take the deal after a pounding in opinion polls.

Then, Republican lawmakers were for extending a tax cut that mostly helped the middle class. This time, they are balking at extending the Bush-era tax cuts for 98 percent of earners and hiking them for the top 2 percent.
