Charlie Crist, Democrat: Former GOP Governor Changes Party Affiliation

Former Republican Governor Charlie Crist has officially joined the Democratic Party, he announced on Friday evening.

Crist, who served as governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011, left the Republican Party after losing a Senate primary battle to Marco Rubio in 2010 — switching his party affiliation to independent in order to run against now-Senator Rubio in the general election. (Crist lost that race by 19 points.)

The newly christened Democrat tweeted the big announcement Friday evening:

T-Mobile Poised To Launch ‘GoSmart Mobile’ Prepaid Brand Next Year

Word on the street about T-Mobile’s mysterious new prepaid brand popped out earlier this week. TMoNews first published details about T-Mobile’s new brand earlier this week. Leaked documents reveal the moniker “GoSmart Mobile” and it looks like the carrier is planning to re-position itself as a premier value postpaid brand in the U.S. The documents also hints that GoSmart Mobile will offer three main, low-cost plans – a $30 plan for unlimited voice and texting, a $35 plan for unlimited voice, texting and 2G web service, and a $45 plan for unlimited voice, texting, and high-speed web service. But with no word from T-Mobile, everything seems hazy. Meanwhile, FierceWireless claims that T-Mobile has confirmed that it is testing a new prepaid brand called GoSmart Mobile in a few selected markets, thereby supporting previous rumors. T-Mobile reportedly said that it plans to launch the service next year.

Apple’s “Steve Jobs” multitouch patent may be invalid

Apple‘s ’949 multi-touch patent, more commonly referred to as the “Steve Jobs patent,” has been used in many patent lawsuits against various companies. Now it looks like karma may be taking a bite out of Apple, with the United States Patent and Trademark Office stating, tentatively, that it is not valid. As reported by FOSS Patents, the Patent and Trademark Office issued a first Office action, the second one in less than 8 weeks.

This latest first Office action is in reference to U.S. Patent No. 7,479,949, a “touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics.” The USPTO has rejected all 20 claims of the patent, filing the action on December 3. This comes after a judge made a preliminary ruling back in late October that deemed the ’949 patent valid and Samsung responsible for having infringed upon it.

A re-examination of this patent was requested back in 2010, which the Patent and Trademark Office rejected. This current reexamination is the result of a second request, with its preliminary results being less-than-ideal for Apple. Just because a first Office action has been taken, however, doesn’t mean that patent won’t carry on in the future.

The first Office action is preliminary, and there is a process that the USPTO will follow in ultimately making its decision. If the decision pans out in the long run, however, companies that Apple has used the patent against will appeal in an effort to invalidate various rulings. For now, it’s just a matter of waiting to see which direction the Patent and Trademark Office will go.

Motorola updates its Jelly Bean timetables, puts key upgrades in Q1 2013

Motorola promises Jelly Bean

Now that Verizon’s most recent Droid RAZR family has had its taste of Jelly Bean, it’s time for Motorola to shift focus to the rest of the devices that have made the cut for the upgrade — and it’s doing just that with an updated timetable for the rollout. Among those phones and tablets that aren’t already on Android 4.1, only the Atrix HD and Asia-Pacific RAZR HD models should get the refresh before 2012 bows out. A larger contingent that includes the Electrify M, the LTE-equipped Xoom and some international models like the European RAZR i will have to wait until the first quarter of 2013 for their turn. Other devices like the Droid Bionic, original RAZR and Photon Q are still on deck, but don’t yet have a schedule. That’s not a comforting sign when we could see a version of Android beyond 4.2 in the spring, so we’re hoping that Motorola is trying to underpromise now and overdeliver later.

YouTube Flies With Virgin America

YouTube is now flying with Virgin America. YouTube has struck a deal with the U.S.-based airline on Thursday this week. The deal involves streaming YouTube content from partners to seat-back screens on Virgin America airplanes in the U.S. and Mexico. Beginning December 15th, passengers will be able to view shows including “H+ The Digital Series,” “Blue,” “Written by a Kid,” “Crash Course” and “The Key of Awesome.” “Bringing YouTube aboard Virgin America is part of a larger effort to bring you more of the videos you love, at heights you’ve never seen them before,” said Kate Berland, YouTube Marketing Manager, in a press release. “Sample these great series on your flight, and then visit YouTube to enjoy the full seasons.” New series and shows are expected to be available every two months.

Microsoft Surface Expanding To Major Retailers Soon [Rumor]

Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet proved to be a success in terms of hardware and design, but one major setback is its availability. As you know, Microsoft is only the sole seller of the tablet via its own retail stores, which is probably around 20 in the U.S. Detwiler Fenton, a Boston-based brokerage firm says that the lack of distribution is killing the product. “Mixed reviews and a [$499] starting price tag certainly don’t help, but lack of retail exposure at Best Buy and others is severely depressing sales,” the firm said. Virgin America and YouTube strike a deal on in-flight content

Virgin America and YouTube have struck a deal, penning the video sharing website’s first distribution agreement with an airline. Beginning December 15, fliers will have access to five YouTube channels via Virgin’s in-flight video entertainment system. The best part? The content is free on flights to Mexico and within the United States.

The free content on the channels will include: H+ The Digital Series from Warner Bros., Crash Course and Written by a Kid from Geek and Sundry, Blue from WIGS, and The Key of Awesome from Barely Political. In making this content available, YouTube is expanding its audience and presenting its content offerings to a larger demographic of users, who may not be aware of the content it currently offers.

This reflects on Virgin’s stated goal of increasing the number of videos it offers four-fold, something it would do in conjunction with increasing the size of its 9-inch rear seat displays, which are available on a quarter of its US flights. This is in addition to the in-flight wireless Internet it offers on many of its flights.

Virgin already offers a variety of in-flight video content via other deals, bringing fliers content from Vevo, Funny or Die, Red Hour Digital, Stoodpid Monkey Productions, Barry Katz Entertainment, AEG, Vice, Rogue, Relativity Media, and more. Back in July, we reported that Virgin American was rated the top domestic airline for the fifth time straight.

‘Masters Of Sex’ And ‘Ray Donovan’: Showtime’s New Dramas Get A Risque Preview Trailer (VIDEO)

Between the critically-acclaimed “Homeland” and the resurgence of “Dexter,” Showtime has had a good year — but will 2013 be even better? If the newly released trailer for “Masters of Sex” and “Ray Donovan” is any indication, the cable network is off to a promising start.

In “Ray Donovan,” Liev Schreiber stars as the kind of fixer who makes the problems of L.A.’s most notable celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear. Things take a turn for the worse when Ray’s father (Jon Voight), is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core. The cast also includes Elliott Gould as Ray’s long-time client and mentor; Paula Malcomson as Ray’s wife, Abby; and Eddie Marsan and Dash Mihok as Ray’s brothers.

Tonally, “Masters of Sex,” starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, is lighter fare — focusing on the real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters and Virginia Johnson. The series will chronicle the unusual lives, romance, and pop culture trajectory of Masters and Johnson. According to Showtime, their research touched off the sexual revolution and took them from a mid-western teaching hospital in St. Louis to the cover of Time magazine and nearly a dozen appearances on Johnny Carson’s couch. Caitlin Fitzgerald, Nicholas D’Agosto, and Teddy Sears also star, along with Beau Bridges and Margo Martindale.
