YouTube brings its guide feature to all devices, provides easier access to subscribed content

The folks working at YouTube are quite the busy little bees, updating apps, adding content and refreshing the site’s look. Today, the site’s rolling out its guide feature through YouTube.com and every YouTube app there is. The video site first introduced the guide last year on its web portal, allowing folks an easy way to keep track of new videos on their subscribed channels. Now, Android, iPhone, PS3, Google TV and other YouTube apps are getting the feature, plus the website’s getting a fresh new look as well. You can get a better look at the new page layout after the break, and there’s more info about the changes at the source below.

YouTube rolling out new layout starting tonight

Starting tonight, YouTube will begin rolling out a new and updated web interface. They say the new design will be “cleaner and simpler” and will also include an improvement to the Guide, which is a feature that makes it easier to subscribe to the channels. This time around, the Guide will be available across all devices.

In the new layout, YouTube has focused on putting the most important elements at the forefront, with the video right at the top of the page, and the subscribe button, as well as share buttons and video information show up right below the video. Playlists will also now appear directly to the right of the video.

Overall, the new design is definitely a lot cleaner and simpler, and the way that the playlist almost looks like it’s part of the video box is pretty clever. However, it looks like related videos are still located below the video box, requiring that you scroll down further in order to browse them. We almost would prefer that related videos go where the new Playlist sidebar is.

Either way, the new look is definitely an improvement, and you should start seeing it sometime tonight, if not already. YouTube has already rolled out the new look to a select number of users as a beta of sorts, and they say that users are subscribing to 50% more channels overall because of the new design.

Sean Parker and Lars Ulrich talk Napster vs. Metallica, hug it out with Spotify

Sean Parker and Lars Ulrich talk Napster vs Metallica, hug it out

One of today’s many, many Spotify announcements was that legendary thrashers Metallica would be coming to the streaming service. As part of the announcement CEO Daniel Ek brought out the bands notoriously outspoken drummer Lars Ulrich and Spotify board member Sean Parker who, as you might remember, had a hand in founding Napster. While there was some broad discussion about the direction of the music industry and the future of music consumption, a large chunk of the half hour-long conversation revolved around the shared history of the two and the legal feud between the pioneering file sharing service and the band. The two were surprisingly cordial, if slightly uncomfortable looking, and delved deep into the details of what both described as a “street fight” between the parties. Ultimately, both admitted that things got blown out of proportion and escalated unnecessarily. But there also seemed to be some admission by Lars that there was an element of Luddism to his band’s reaction. To see the entire, extremely interesting conversation, check out the video after the break.

Elder Scrolls Keening Dagger Replica: Quick, Hide the Heart of Lorkhan Replica

Confession bear time: I’ve never played any Elder Scrolls game, mostly because I don’t enjoy open world games. Which means I don’t know how unusual the weapons in the series can get. Maybe there’s one made from balloons or whatever balloons are called in the games. But I like the design of the Keening dagger. And by that I mean I like this replica.

This replica was made by Bill Doran, who is not a replica Dwemer but a real artisan who is good at making props and costumes. Elder Scrolls fans know that the Keening first appeared in Morrowind, but Doran used its appearance in Skyrim as his guide. The hilt is made of plastic resin with bronze powder, while the crystalline blade – I call it the Heisenberg – was made from “Tap Plastic’s Clear-Lite resin with some green and blue transparent tint added.”

Doran said he the replica will be auctioned off at a Child’s Play event today, although I think that’s exactly what an evil High Priest would say if he’s messing with… with evil magics and stuff. I’ve run out of Elder Scrolls references. Go on, fast travel to Doran’s blog for more pictures and details on the process.

And Now: The Taiwanese Animation Version of the John McAfee Story

Things aren’t going well for John McAfee right now. He’s been hospitalized with an unconfirmed condition, and his request for asylum was turned down by Guatemala. But let’s take a moment to look back at the bizarre path we took to get here through the bizarre-is-what-we-do lens of the NMA, the Taiwanese animation studio. More »

Samsung remains #1 in China smartphone market, Apple falls to #6

Last week, we announced that the iPhone 5 is finally making its way into the smartphone market in China, but while Apple may be dominating in the US, the company’s status isn’t the same over in China. Apple fell to the sixth spot in smartphone market share in China, being overtaken by Huawei. Samsung still remains at the top with Lenovo in the #2 spot.

During Apple’s third quarter this year, the company saw its market share fall two spots compared to where they were at during the second quarter, and according to research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple’s market share by shipments was under 10% during the third quarter, when China’s own smartphone shipments hit a record high at more than 60 million shipments.

However, the iPhone 5 will launch in China on December 14. It’s expected that Apple’s market share will rebound at that time, but it’s anyone guess if the company can make their way back into the top five in market share. The drop to #6 comes close after Apple’s shares fell more than 6%, making it the biggest single-day loss in four years for the company.

While Samsung and Lenovo claim the top two spots in smartphone market share in China, Coolpad has the third spot and ZTE fell to the fourth spot. China has more than one billion mobile phone subscribers, so the market for smartphones is booming in the country. We’ll see how well the iPhone 5 sells and if Apple can boost up its market share in China.
