Jack Brooks Dead: Texas Democrat Who Served 42 Years In Congress Dies At 89

HOUSTON (AP) — Jack Brooks, who spent 42 years in Congress representing his Southeast Texas district and was in the Dallas motorcade in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, has died. He was 89.

Brooks died Tuesday night at Baptist Hospital of Beaumont after a sudden illness, according to a statement from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. Brooks, who would have turned 90 on Dec. 18, was surrounded by family when he died, Deputy Rod Carroll said.

Brooks was among the last links to an era when Democrats dominated Texas politics and was the last of “Mr. Sam’s Boys,” protégés of fellow Texan and legendary 21-year Democratic House Speaker Sam Rayburn in the state’s congressional delegation.

Ford announces first-ever Lincoln Super Bowl commercial

This morning, we reported that Ford had changed the name of Lincoln to the Lincoln Motor Company in an effort to revive its luxury division and set it aside as a unique brand. Now, furthering this goal, the company has announced that a Lincoln advertisement is slated to appear during the 2013 Super Bowl on February 3. This is the first Lincoln Super Bowl commercial ever.

The commercial is 60-seconds in length, and will feature President Lincoln walking out of some mist. Also included in the commercial will be images of famous individuals who have owned Lincoln brand vehicles, including Dean Martin. This is all in a near-desperate push to distinguish the brand and correct ever-decreasing sales, which have dropped 63-percent since 1990.

Speaking about Ford’s efforts to reinvent the luxury brand and pull it up out of the dreck, Lincoln’s Director of Marketing, Sales, and Service Matt VanDyke offered this statement. “It’s our largest campaign ever from the size, scale and reach of it. Every touch point is being reinvented. Everything we’re doing is different.”

Ford plans to unveil the Lincoln MKZ, a luxury sedan with a starting price of $35,925. The MKZ features a panoramic glass roof, a push-button transmission, and a split-wing grill. So far, only 69,000 Lincoln vehicles have been sold in 2012. According to Bloomberg, the average cost of a one minute commercial during the 2012 Super Bowl was $7 million, so it’s safe to say that Ford is going all-out in its efforts to save Lincoln.

Microsoft launches Socl into Beta, brings the part(ies) to social networking

Microsoft launches Socl into Beta, throws its federa into the social networking ring

Microsoft has unleashed Socl into beta for all comers to probe, bringing it out of the experimental stages and a step closer to a full-fledged site. We first heard about the project back in July when it was dubbed Tulalip, and MS Research’s Fuse Labs officially launched it internally and into some universities back in October last year. The site carries the Windows 8 tile-like look, and Fuse says that imagery is emphasized over “blue links” for search, helping democratize the site “even for people who speak different languages.” That lets you find others via posts, a people gallery, or someone’s page — where new posts, people and interests can be viewed all at once. A nav bar allows articles to be created by topics like web, videos or news, and users can create “parties,” where they can chat, create playlists or watch videos with others in a similar fashion to Google Hangouts. The project was coded using Redmond’s Java-hued Typescript to allow for rapid coding changes, according to Fuse’s blog in the source below. To try it out for yourself, check the “more coverage” link.

Los Angeles Port Workers Strike: Deal Approved To End Crippling Walk-Out, Mayor Says

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Negotiators reached an agreement late Tuesday to end an eight-day strike that crippled the nation’s largest port complex and prevented shippers from delivering billions of dollars in cargo to warehouses and distribution centers across the country.

“I’m really pleased to tell all of you that my 10,000 longshore workers in the ports of LA and Long Beach are going to start moving cargo on these ships,” said Ray Familathe, vice president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. “We’re going to get cargo moved throughout the supply chain and the country and get everybody those that they’re looking for in those stores.”

Striking clerical workers and the longshoremen who refused to cross their picket lines will be back on the job Wednesday morning, said Stephen Berry of the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Employers Association.

Nokia Lumia 920T for China Mobile brings TD-SCDMA to Windows Phone

Nokia Lumia 920T for China Mobile brings TD-SCDMA to Windows Phone

Nokia just announced plans to launch a TD-SCDMA version of its Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 flagship. The handset, designated Lumia 920T, will be available on China Mobile by the end of the year for RMB 4599 (about $739) in a choice of four colors (black, white, yellow and red). It’s the first Windows Phone to support the country’s TD-SCDMA standard and the first Windows Phone 8 device available in China.

Spec-wise, the Lumia 920T is almost identical to its western sibling. Other than packing a different radio, it features the same 4.5-inch 1280×768-pixel PureMotion HD+ display, optically image-stabilized 8.7-megapixel f/2.0 Carl Zeiss autofocus camera, and 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor (plus 1GB RAM). There’s no word on storage capacity, but the handset presumably matches the original with 32GB on board.

The Lumia 920T integrates with local Internet services such as Sina, Sohu, Tencent, Baidu and Renren and provides access to both the Chinese Marketplace (50,000 apps) and Mobile Market (China Mobile’s app store). It also offers NFC deals on location-based service Jiepang (in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou). Furthermore, Nokia and Air China are making wireless chargers available in VIP lounges at Beijing airport. Hit the break for the full PR.

BlackBerry Messenger Money app set to launch in Indonesia

RIM has given the official word that it will be adding a financial feature to its BlackBerry Messenger App called “Money.” The upcoming feature will allow BBM users to transfer funds from their phone. It’s slated for release in Indonesia first, with the only timeline given being that it’ll happen “shortly,” with other locations to follow.

Word that RIM has such a feature planned has been circulating for awhile, but this is the first time any official confirmation has been given. When visiting Jakarta several weeks ago, the company’s CEO Thorsten Heins hinted at this feature, saying that BlackBerry Messenger is as strong of a platform for financial transactions as it is for communication. RIM’s Managing Director of South Asia Operations Hastings Singh then offered BBC this statement in an interview.

“Indonesia is very important for RIM. It is a huge market for us … So we are offering a new innovation – BBM Money which will be launched in Indonesia – first in the world – shortly. It is a peer-to-peer transfer service that anyone with a Blackberry phone can use to transfer funds to someone else with a Blackberry phone.”

BlackBerry has been losing ground in the market, with government agencies dropping it in favor of more popular mobile operating systems, including the NTSB, while consumers largely select either Android or the iPhone. Despite its trouble battling against Android and iOS, BlackBerry is still massively popular in Indonesia, where it has over 50-percent of the marketshare. There’s no info on when Money will be available in Indonesia and beyond, but perhaps we’ll know more once BB10 launches next year.

RG3 Attends Wizards-Heat Game, Meets LeBron James After Washington’s Win (VIDEO)

Robert Griffin III seems to have the Midas touch. The rookie quarterback has led the Redskins back to .500 with three straight wins, each coming against division opponents. Along the way, he broke the NFL rookie QB record for rushing yards in a single season. He’s playing so well that even his fumbles somehow turn into touchdowns.

Now that’s special. But could he help the Washington Wizards? Remember, we’re talking about the same Wizards who started the season 0-12 and had just one win going entering Tuesday night when they happened to be playing the defending champions Miami Heat. RG3 attended Tuesday night’s game at the Verizon Center and sat courtside, where he witnessed the 1-13 Wizards pull off an improbable upset over the Heat, despite LeBron James’ triple double.

Maybe some of his magic did rub off on another D.C. professional sports team. After all, the Redskins had just defeated the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants. It’s not logical, but sometimes certain things in sports don’t make sense (see: Tim Tebow’s 2011 season).
