GMail 2.0 for iOS launched

google gmail 2Google has announced that GMail 2.0 for iOS phones and tablets is available in the app store. The new version brings a new user interface that looks very clean and almost minimalist. The second must-see features is the ability to use multiple GMail account and quickly switch from one to the other.

Of course, there are also many other changes. For example, profile pictures have appeared and are used whenever possible, search prediction has been added to accelerate email search by a few taps and it is possible to instantly respond to Google Calendar event invitations from GMail 2.0.

Overall, this seems to be a good upgrade, and I’m really glad to see Google improving the visual design of the GMail app. Although Google does not say, we wonder if the Sparrow team had something to do with this. Sparrow was an email client app that was acquired by Google on July 20.

Fox Steals iPhone And Sends SMS Messages With It

fox steals iphoneA Fox has reportedly stolen a phone and subsequently send SMS messages from it. Here’s how it happened: kids spotted a fox near their homes and tried to attract it with an iPhone app that simulates the sound of a dying rabbit (there’s really an app for everything!). Left on the ground, the phone indeed attracted the Fox (probably by saying “diner time” in “fox/rabbit language”) which grabbed the phone and ran away with it. (more…)

LaCie d2 external HD rebooted with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt

It’s time for the LaCie d2 external hard drive to be re-released, this time with a boost that should, by all means, make it into a brand new device altogether. What we’re looking at here is what’s now called the LaCie d2 USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series and it’s ready for universal connectivity like no other. This machine works with the fabulous speeds of USB 3.0 for a large cross-section of brand new machines and hits speeds to the max with no less than Thunderbolt connectivity for speeds up to two times that of FireWire 800.

This machine now works with speeds up to 180MB/s and has the ability to transfer a 10GB project in less than a minute. This comes with a fan-free aluminum heat sink design with a sleek silvery aesthetic and a lovely blue eye. This industrial design creates 60 percent more surface area than flat designs, this allowing heat to efficiently divert and dissipate like a champ. You’ll be able to stack these drives up if you wish, or just keep one to the side of your computer upright on its own simple stand.

You’ve got 256-bit AES encryption for security and the knowledge that you’re working with a company that’s been in business making drives like these for almost a decade. With USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces you’ll be able to work with new Apple products such as the MacBook Pro and Ultrabooks of many kinds. You’ve got backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 as well and you get both a USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt cable in the box.

The LaCie d2 was designed by Neil Poulton and remains as iconic as it was the day it was originally revealed. This new edition will be available with a full backup software suite in two sizes, one of them with 3TB of space, the other with 4TB. You’ll be able to grab this lovely drive immediately if not soon from your favorite LaCie retailer or reseller.

Kindle app for iOS updated with X-Ray

Users of Amazon’s Kindle app for iOS will be pleased to hear that the company has updated the app to include one of the Kindle’s latest new features called X-Ray. The feature enables users to explore the “bones of the book.” Users can view more info about a book, such as ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, and places.

The X-Ray feature is powered by Wikipedia and Shelfari (Amazon’s own community-powered encyclopedia), and it basically allows you to break a book down into different sections like people and terms, and then dig deeper into those individual sections to learn more about them. It’s a really handy for those who are really wanting to fully understand the book they’re reading.

The feature is only compatible with English titles at the moment, and not every single book supports X-Ray — it’s mostly just the popular titles that come with it. However, X-Ray is available for a select number of textbooks, and it gives you “instant access to all the most important terms and concepts, with glossary definitions, links to relevant textbook pages, and related content from Wikipedia and YouTube.”

You’ll need to be running iOS 5 or later in order to update to the newest Kindle app version, but the update is free and it’s available now in the iTunes App Store. We have to give it up for Amazon, though. Their business model is impeccable, and allowing anyone to access and purchase Amazon content, whether they have a Kindle tablet or not, is a good way to get as many customers as possible, no matter the platform.

Capping the Deep Water Horizon Well Could Have Caused an Even Bigger Disaster

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that after the Deep Water Horizon disaster, engineers and scientists weren’t sure that capping the Macondo well was the best idea. In fact, it could have lead to an even larger, harder to control spill. More »

Toshiba Excite 10 SE Android Tablet

Toshiba has just introduced the Toshiba Excite 10 SE, an 10″ tablet running on Android 4.1 aka “Jelly Bean”. Inside, users will find an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor and 16GB of storage which can be supplemented by a microSD memory card. This particular model is WiFi-only and there is no word about a 3G model at this point. Given that the tablet costs ($350), Toshiba may want to keep the production line making a single model to streamline things. (more…)

Black Diamond III multi-sensory bluetooth speaker hits the lights

It’s not directly related to the fabulous early hit by the Hottest Band in the World, but will certainly look good while you’re playing it: this is the Black Diamond III multi-sensory Bluetooth speaker. This machine is the first Bluetooth speaker “capable of mimicking music beats and rhythms through color and movement,” so says Sales and Marketing Manager of Acase Tom Hsieh. And for those of you wondering why there’s a “III” on the tail of this little ball of magic, you’ll want to head back to the Black Diamond archives more than once.

This device is alternately titled BlackDiamond3 depending on where you look for it, and though its predecessors worked with the iPhone as a dock, this unit opens up to the full smart device universe with Bluetooth integration. You’ll be working with your iOS devices, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone – and whatever else you can connect with Bluetooth, notebooks included. Each unit contains two high-quality “diamond clear” left/right 3W*2 speakers and work with a remote control as well.

Inside you’ll find a fixed or flow set of colors up to what the folks at Yantouc say are “16,000,000 colors.” To power this device up all you’ve got to do is plug in via its AC-to-USB adapter and roll out with only 5W, 100 to 240V AC. This machine also has a bass resonant tube inside for low frequency music and a built-in equalizer for improving audio response by 10dB – hot stuff!

Even the packaging has been pumped up to make this unit “good for a gift” as they say with an 8-edges diamond design, all for $120 USD MSRP. We’ll be taking a good hands-on look at this device later this week – stay tuned! Meanwhile have a peek at our most recent gift guide for audio equipment to say up to date on what’s been fabulous this year – 2012, the year of the Bluetooth boom!
