Steam Big Picture Mode officially launches, Valve celebrates with sale

PC players who love playing on the big screen rejoice, because Valve has officially launched Steam Big Picture Mode. Big Picture Mode has been in beta since September, but now it’s ready for prime time, with Valve rolling the feature out to everyone. For the uninitiated, Big Picture Mode makes Steam and the games it offers compatible with larger screens, meaning you can hook up your computer to your TV and play your PC library from the couch.

It gets even better though, because Valve has decided to celebrate the official roll out of Big Picture with a sale. The sale will be going on until December 10, with all of the games on sale coming with full support for controllers. By “full support,” Valve means that you can use a controller for everything – including the installation process – making them the perfect choice for Big Picture players.

In all, Steam lists 41 games with full controller support, and another 386 games with partial controller support. If you pick up a game with partial controller support, be aware that while they’re compatible with controllers, they may need a mouse and keyboard at times. In any case, there are plenty of games that are primed and ready for Big Picture mode, so you should have no lack of titles to play on the big screen.

Notable titles that have been discounted for this sale include a number of games in the LEGO series, Castle Crashers, Sonic Generations, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, and Braid. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though, with many games being discounted by as much as 75%. Even if you aren’t planning to play these titles in Big Picture mode, this is still a good time to snag a few deals you missed during the Steam autumn sale. Are you planning to take advantage of Steam Big Picture mode?

Flicker-Free Silent Panel Lights Will Bring Relief To Office Drones Everywhere

Physicists at Wake Forest University have developed a revolutionary lighting alternative that promises to be at least twice as efficient as fluorescent bulbs without the notorious buzzing and flicker plaguing offices across the country. The new bulbs are also free of toxic mercury vapor, shatterproof, and promise to solve world hunger. (Ok that last one might be stretching things.) More »

Motorola DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD Jelly Bean update rolling out now

Keeping up with their promise from Friday, Motorola and Verizon have begun rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. Over-the-air update notifications are slowly hitting users’ devices, and new RAZR owners will finally be able to experience Project Butter, Google Now, and ISIS enhancements.

While Verizon simply said that update would hit sometime this week, we’re glad it’s happening first thing rather than later in the week on a Thursday or Friday. Either way, Verizon is pushing out the update “in phases,” so be patient if you haven’t yet seen the update hit your notification tray — it will come!

The Jelly Bean update comes with Google Now, which offers a Siri-like voice search experience that we really like, as well as Project Butter, which adds a layer of virtual butter to the user interface to make it snappier and smoother to navigate, as well as make it quicker to open up apps and switch between them effortlessly.

The DROID RAZR HD comes with a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display and runs on a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM. While the 2530mAh battery may be plenty for most users, Motorola launched the RAZR MAXX HD, which is practically identical to the RAZR HD, except for the larger 3300mAh battery for those who really want to last all day long.

Microsoft Rumored To Deliver Three New Surface Tablets In 2013

surface-1-2

A relatively reliable MSFT tipster @MS_nerd recently tweeted that Redmond will release three new and distinct generations of the Surface tablet sometime in 2013.

Ballmer recently said on a shareholders’ call that the company would never again let hardware or anything else stand as a barrier to innovation, admitting that Microsoft was late to the game (especially with the tablet).

It only makes sense that they would go big with both Surface and Windows 8, making up for lost time with plenty of shapes and sizes. After all, the company bet a lot on the popularity of a brand-new Microsoft, complete with Metro, touch, and true entry into the hardware space.

The first tablet is said to be an 8.6-inch Surface RT 2, running on a Qualcomm chipset instead of the NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip. The Microsoft Pro will allegedly upgrade to an 11.6-inch display with an unreleased AMD “Temash” APU, and a new Surface Book product will sport a hefty 14.6-inch display with a next-gen 22nm “Haswell” chip from Intel under the hood.

It’s interesting that none of the new models have the same 10.6-inch screen size as current-generation Surface RT and Pro slates do. However, in our reviews, we felt the form factor was a bit awkward and larger than the tablet that currently dominates the large tablet space, the 9.7-inch iPad.

And then there’s Amazon and Google’s 7- to 8-inch offerings, and Barnes & Noble, and we can’t forget the iPad Mini now, either. Microsoft is late to a very feisty and competitive game, and a big push is necessary. And so far Surface sales have been slow going.

The breadth of the lineup also sounds plausible alongside rumors of a Surface phone, as DigiTimes recently reported that Microsoft has sent orders to Foxconn for a self-branded and Microsoft-designed Surface phone.

Of course, it’ll still be a while. Though the tipster specified 2013, I wouldn’t expect to see new models in stores until the holidays next year.

BioShock 2 now free to play all week long for PlayStation Plus subscribers

Sony will be pushing an update to its PlayStation Store tomorrow that will introduce a slew of deals that users will want to take advantage of. One of the better deals, however, is that they’re releasing BioShock 2 to the ever-expanding Instant Game Collection for free this week. The game will be available for free if you’re a Plus member once the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow.

BioShock 2 was released in February 2010, and it’s the sequel to the original BioShock, which featured some of the best gameplay elements we’ve ever seen. All week long, PlayStation Plus users will have the chance to download and play the game for free via the service’s Instant Game Collection.

Other deals for Plus subscribers include a 10% discount on Rockstar Games Collection Edition 1, which is a bundle that includes Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, L.A. Noire, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles Complete Edition. The bundle usually costs $59.99, but Plus members can pick it up for $53.99 — not a huge discount, but better than no discount at all.

Puzzle game Puddle will also be 50% off on both of its platforms, costing only $5 for PlayStation 3 gamers and just $4 for PlayStation Vita users. However, it’s not cross-platform compatible, so if you want the game on both systems, you’ll have to cough up $9 for the pair. Sony has said that they plan to release weekly updates to the PlayStation Store that will include new deals and offers for every week all month long.

AT&T rolls out 4G LTE service in six new markets

Whip out those handsets, AT&T customers, because the company announced today that it has launched 4G LTE service in six new markets. These announcements of 4G LTE rolls outs are coming in at breakneck speeds from AT&T, so it would seem that the company is very serious about expanding its coverage area. That’s definitely good news for subscribers, as it means there are more areas in the country where they can access AT&T’s LTE network.

Within the continental US, there are three markets getting AT&T 4G LTE today: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Reading Pennsylvania. Folks in Puerto Rico are getting a boost to AT&T data speeds too, with the company rolling out in San German-Cabo Rojo, Yuco, and Guayama. This brings the total number of AT&T 4G LTE markets up to 109, with AT&T saying that its LTE network now covers 150 million people.

Of course, AT&T still has a long way to go before it catches up with Verizon, which is expecting to have its 4G LTE roll out finished by the middle of next year. By comparison, AT&T said a couple weeks back that its network will cover 300 million people by the end of 2014, so Verizon will have quite the jump on AT&T. In any case, AT&T is putting a lot of effort into expanding its 4G LTE network, which should be appreciated by its subscribers.

Again, the company deserves kudos for rolling out in new markets so quickly too. At this rate, we expect to hear more about AT&T’s expanding network very soon. Keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more, as we’ll have new information for you once AT&T shares it!
