Breakthrough Engines Could Allow Travel from Britain to Australia in Just over Four Hours

A group of British researchers at a company called Reaction Engines has announced new aircraft technology that could make air travel much faster. The researchers have created what they describe as “the biggest breakthrough in propulsion since the jet engine.” The Sabre engine use a fancy compressed helium cooling system able to cool air entering the engine from 1000°C to -150°C in 1/100 of a second.

The technology is able to cool the incoming air at incredible speed and without creating any ice that could cause problems. The new cooling system could allow jet engines to run at much higher levels of power than is currently possible without overheating. The researchers believe that aircraft using these engines could reach speeds of over 2000 mph, propelling an aircraft from London to Sydney in about 4.5 hours.

The company also believes that these engines might allow aircraft to go from atmospheric flight to space flight in a single stage. The aircraft engines may also be able to gather enough oxygen from air at low altitudes to create their own fuel before switching to internal fuel sources for higher speed travel.

MSN ‘Money Now’ Launched

After launching msnNOW in February and adding the new MSN Healthy Living wellness content in June, MSN is now launching a new content called Money Now. Money Now is actually the first channel to embody the msnNOW content. Essentially, Money Now scans real-time sources, including Facebook, Twitter, Bing and StockTwits, to keep users up-to-date on the latest finance and investing topics that are trending on the web. You can check it out here.

According to Amey Stone, the managing editor for MSN Money, Money Now offers smart, original, and entertaining takes on the hottest money topics around the world. Investors can learn what are the companies that their peers are searching for on the web. Contrary to just reading boring money news, Stone says that Money Now goes right straight to the key question on every issue.

Users will also find the “Trending Now” feature which helps them track the most popular financial keywords and stock tickers of the day. Basically the results are determined by MSN’s unique computer algorithm. ”Wondering how much money rapper Psy is making from his record-setting YouTube video, Gangnam style? Find out at Money Now. Did you know that gun sales soared during Black Friday this year? Or that Japan Airlines is now offering KFC on flights ? Those are the kind of conversation starters you’ll learn about on Money Now,” Stone adds.

Snafu Or Sequel? Xbox Live Survey Hints At Unreleased HTC Titan III Windows Phone

xbox-survey

In a recently released survey meant for Xbox Live users, Microsoft got a bit curious about people’s smartphone preferences. Fair enough — they’ve got some skin in the game, after all — but there was something slightly amiss about how the question was framed. What the designers of the survey didn’t seem to realize is that there’s no such thing as an HTC Titan III… or is there?

HTC’s Titan series of Windows Phones was meant to draw crowds with their large screen sizes, but the Titan brand hasn’t yet been stuck on a Windows Phone 8 device. Some (like the folks at CNET) are drawing comparisons between the Titan III and another as-yet unreleased device, the HTC Zenith. It’s hard not to, really — back before HTC officially pulled back the curtains on its pair of Windows Phone 8 devices, a report from The Verge pointed to the existence of three new Windows Phones from the Taiwanese OEM. The entry-level and mid-range models eventually saw the light of day as the HTC 8S and 8X respectively, leaving a glaring hole where that third flagship-tier handset was apparently supposed to go.

The Zenith’s purported spec sheet raised more than a few eyebrows — an unspecified quad-core processor was said to run the show, and the device was said to feature a 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 display and support for 42Mbps HSPA+. That emphasis on sheer screen size is a trait featured by both previous Titan models, as the name sort of implies — Titans I and II both had 4.7-inch Super LCD panels, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Titan III moniker get slapped on another device of that size.

Of course, there’s a another, much simpler possibility here. Marketing research types devote plenty of time and attention to couching their questions just the right way, but it’s still possible that the choice in question is just an unfortunate typo that has riled up certain geeky parts of the web. It’s worth noting that AT&T is running some holiday promotion on the Titan II in an attempt to move old hardware, so it’s possible this whole kerfuffle is an attempt to delve into the effects of holiday promotions on device sales or awareness. Or something. Either way, it’s something to be on the lookout for — HTC has never been the most security-conscious company out there, so expect a deluge of Titan III leaks in the weeks to come if it’s actually real.

Five Things Apple Can Learn From Windows 8

win8-macbook

I’ve been using Windows 8 off and on for the past few weeks and, while I agree with many of the sentiments expressed by folks like Chris Pirillo and our own MG Siegler, especially regarding the Surface RT, I still think Microsoft did a good (not excellent) job on Win8.

In the immortal words of losing Little League coaches everywhere, at least they tried and there’s always next season. Windows 8 won’t be universally hated, say, when it pops up on a few hundred thousand new laptops come the holidays and kids and parents start mousing around the new interface. In fact, given its unique nature, I think even Apple could learn a thing or two from Microsoft in this case. That said, we scrounged around for five things Apple could do to learn from Microsoft.

Try a little touch – I was writing on my Mac the other day and suddenly an autocorrect box popped up and stayed up a little to long. The suggested words appeared and the little X to close the window. My finger instinctively rose to tap it closed and, much to my chagrin, nothing happened.

Apple has ingrained the idea of touch as a viable interface yet refuses to add it to its own line of laptops and desktops. Arguably OS X is definitely not ready for a touch interface with its tiny buttons and menus, but fullscreen mode and Launchpad ostensibly point to a potential iOS-like interface. I think the desktop/window user experience is going to be difficult to tear away from the laptop or PC experience, but as Apple proved with iOS, users are more than happy to try a new paradigm. Microsoft tried constantly to make tablets work by throwing a stock Windows experience onto a slate. Now they have a chance.

Hide the file system – While arguably Windows 8 doesn’t exactly hide the file system from prying eyes, in the Metro interface you are reminded that it exists far less than usual. While dumping into the desktop interface offers a jarring reminder that all your files are still there, the default Win 8 concept is of a machine that holds files with little input or mussing about by the user. This, in a way, is a good thing.

While we nerds love deep, branching file systems, the average user is mystified by them. Where do files go? Why did they end up in Documents and not Downloads? Instead of making a home directory, why not make a home space. Everything can pop up in there and a quick search reveals the files. Granted, Apple has done some of this in iCloud, but it’s not quite there yet.

Better system-wide social – Granted neither company has quite implemented social quite that well just yet, but Microsoft’s live tiles with flipping and flopping feed images and the interaction between social networks and contact lists is doing an interesting job of it. Simply Tweeting from the Services menu isn’t exactly what many of us had in mind when we thought of true social interaction.

Smarter icons – If there’s anything I like about Win 8 and Windows Phone, it’s the concept of live tiles or, more precisely, live icons. OS X and iOS badges work and something can be said for the zen-like stasis of most previous-gen icons, but more information at a glance is becoming increasingly more important. Although we could argue about the potential distractions associated with messy live tiles all over the screen, I still think it’s a sight better than that incessant bouncing or the tiny numbered badge that offers little in the way of informative content.

Shake things up – Here’s the thing: at least Microsoft knows that the desktop model is stagnant. Touchscreens are a proven method for device interaction and they have tried, and failed, to bring Windows to slates. They know what works and what doesn’t. Love them or hate them, Microsoft has a dog in the fight for the future OS design. Now everyone else will have to play catch-up.

Yahoo’s year-end search report sees iPhone 5 near top

Now that we’ve officially entered December, 2012 is beginning to wind down. Since we’ll soon be saying hello to 2013, it’s time once again for those interesting year-end list that give us all sorts of statistics from the last 12 months. Today one of those lists is coming from Yahoo, breaking down its 10 most popular search terms for the year.

Only one gadget graces that top 10 list: the iPhone 5. Apple’s latest iPhone managed to secure the number two spot on the list, ranking behind the 2012 US election but above the likes of Kim Kardashian, who somehow was number three on the list. The iPhone 5 also ranked above Kate Upton, Kate Middleton, the Olympics, and Lindsay Lohan, so take that as you will.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the iPhone 5 took the top spot in Yahoo’s list of top 5 most searched gadgets according to The Los Angeles Times. The third-generation iPad came in second, while the iPad mini managed to slide into a third place ranking. It wasn’t just Apple products in the top five though, as the Samsung Galaxy S III and Amazon Kindle Fire rounded out the group.

Not bad a phone that’s only been available since September. Of course, with all of the rumors that were making the rounds before Apple finally unveiled the phone, it isn’t all that surprising to see it rank so high on Yahoo’s year-end list. Be sure to have a look at our story timeline below for more on the iPhone 5!

These Awesome Photoshops Are Perfect Because They Were Well Planned

These images by Martín De Pasquale are so surreal that, obviously, you know they aren’t actual photos. But they are perfectly executed. And the reason for that is not awesome Photoshop skills as much as good planning. If you want to make perfect photo composites, it’s not that hard if you plan in advance. Martín’s examples will show you how to do it. More »

Zelda 64: The Ocarina of Cake

It’s dangerous to eat dinner alone, here, take this Zelda N64 cake and have some dessert. It not only has Link and Zelda, but it also features an edible console with an equally edible cartridge and gamepad.

zelda cakeThis wonderfully-detailed cake was created by Tracey at the Black Cherry Cake Company. It is based on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I’m not even sure where I would start with a cake like this. Which part do you eat first? I’d probably start with Zelda, then eat Link, then some rupees. I would save the N64 and the cartridge for last.
