PC system requirements for Crysis 3 revealed

If you’re planning on playing Crytek’s upcoming Crysis 3 on your computer instead of a console like the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3, Crytek has announced the minimum and recommended PC specs that you will need in order to either run it at bare minimal settings, or at a comfortable settings that will allow you to enjoy the game’s graphics, although maybe not maxed out. Windows XP has not made the cut, so for those still running on XP and are hoping to play the game, you will need to upgrade to at the very least Windows Vista, although on Vista you will need 3GB minimum RAM versus 2GB on Windows 7 or Windows 8. Either way you can check out the full specs required after the break: (more…)

Naming your kid after Apple’s products/services has apparently risen in popularity

About a week ago it seems that a parent had named their baby “Hashtag”, which we assume was based on the #hashtag which has been popularized by Twitter. That being said with the rapid increase of technology being prevalent in our everyday lives, we guess it’s not surprising that parents are starting to name their kids after products or services, and according to Baby Center, some of the more popular choices of names in 2012 have been inspired by Apple. According to Baby Center, naming a girl baby “Apple” has risen in popularity by 15%, while naming a baby boy “Mac” has risen by 12%. Interestingly it seems that Siri seems to have made the cut for baby girls and has seen an increase in popularity by 5%.  Rather interesting choices although we’re not sure if your kids might appreciate it when they’re older – what do you guys think? Any Apple fans out there who might be willing to name their newborn baby after one of the Cupertino company’s products or services?

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for iOS and Android trailer debuts

Come 6th of December, gamers who have enjoyed Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will be pleased to know that the game will be debuting on both iOS and Android, but until then the folks at Rockstar have released a new trailer video of the upcoming game that will give players some clues as to what they might be able to expect. With the game having been released a good decade ago, there will be some improvements to the graphics, along with some slight changes to the gameplay to make up for the fact that the controls will be touchscreen based. It’s probably not the best looking game we’ve seen on mobile so far, but GTA has mostly been about the gameplay and we guess with Vice City sitting at 10 years old, its graphics can certainly be forgiven (might even be nostalgic for some gamers). In case you missed our previous report, the game will be priced at $4.99 for both iOS and Android.

Nokia: We want a Linux expert for HERE Maps not an Android phone

Nokia’s hunt for a Linux engineer is connected with Android, but not – as many hoped – because the Finnish phone firm plans to make an Android smartphone. Anticipation built last week, when a briefly spotted job advert for a Linux expert tipped to help Nokia with “exciting new products” prompted suggestions that the company would hedge its Windows Phone bets and consider adopting another platform alongside Microsoft’s. However, Nokia’s head of media relations Doug Dawson took to Twitter to pour cold water onto the speculation.

Instead, Dawson clarified, the new role is designed to help deliver some of Nokia’s more recent services onto rival platforms. HERE Maps is specifically called out; “Our recently posted job is linked to our HERE Maps support for other platforms,” Dawson says, “including iOS and Android.”

Announced last month, HERE Maps is Nokia’s challenge to Google Maps and Bing Maps, a navigation and route-planning service built using the NAVTEQ technology it acquired some time ago. That NAVTEQ cleverness already powers Nokia Maps on Windows Phone, but with the debut of HERE Maps was expanded to tackle other platforms.

An iOS version was the first such release, though the webapp did not meet with universal approval. Nokia’s UI – which differs distinctly from the standard iOS interface – was criticized, while some experienced unusual or nonsensical navigation directions.

Facebook lottery winning fraudster found out

You know the old adage, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. I’m sure anyone with a Facebook account has several people who have shared the photograph of a smiling, scraggly bearded Powerball winner over the last few days named Nolan Daniels. I’ve seen several people on my friends list share the photo with the caption “share this and I’ll give $1 million to some random person.”

That photograph was shared by over 2 million people and Nolan Daniels as it turns out is a faker. The man’s full name is Nolan Ryan Daniels, and he is a software engineer and a co-owner of a company called N2 Technologies from Mesa, Arizona. The company provides software for firms in the medical industry.

Daniels’ brother Derek reportedly confirmed his identity to the Savannah Morning News. The lottery winning fraudster’s brother said “I think he craves the love from people.” It’s unclear if the man’s brother was being humorous or has a problem with what Daniels did on Facebook.

So far, Nolan Daniels hasn’t offered any of his own insights as to why he started his ruse. Perhaps in the beginning it was simply a joke on friends that soon expanded massively beyond what he expected. The moral of the story is don’t believe everything you read on Facebook.

Korea Times: LG’s first in-house chips will launch at CES 2013

Korea Times LGs first inhouse chips will launch at CES 2013

Remember when LG announced it would license ARM’s processor designs so that it could be come a fabless chipmaker — so that it could exert more control over its own processors? Well, if the Korea Times is to be believed, then LG could unveil its first homemade chips at CES 2013. In an attempt to gain more “independence and dignity” for its business, CEO Koo Bon-joon has pushed for the company to own as much of its technology as it can. As such, it’s apparently ready to debut a chip for embedded devices called H13, built on TSMC’s coveted 28-nanometer process. The newspaper is also reporting that a mobile version is in the works which the company will use in its own phones and also try to sell to rivals — mirroring the business plan of that other Korean behemoth.

Lumen LED Pine Tree Shadow Projector

There are a few sights that will definitely make you feel relaxed right from the get go – among them an overview of a forest below, the breathtaking sight of a roaring waterfall, the seeming calm of the ocean, and of course, who can forget those romantic sunsets? We have yet another one here which has to do with sunsets, except that the setting is filled with pine trees. Well, you need not drive to the edge of a pine forest to get the job done, but the $69.99 Lumen LED Pine Tree Shadow Projector will let you sit in the comfort of your own home, while the acid-etched, stainless steel, LED shadow projector that is designed by Brooklyn-based artist and product inventor Adam Frank will throw a soft shadow on the wall when lit.

It is rather interesting to note that as the LED “flame” flickers, the shadow will move about in an organic manner. The laws of physics dictate that the farther the Lumen is from the wall, the larger the shadow will be. If you want to get up close and personal, then you will be greeted with greater detail. Apart from the On/Off switch, the AA battery powered Lumen LED Pine Tree Shadow Projector comes with 4, 6, and 8 hour timer options.

Patent troll Arendi sues Apple over alleged patent infringement

Patent trolls are nothing new and they often make the headlines by going after high profile companies over a vague patent that said company may or may not have infringed upon. Now it looks like Apple is being targeted by one of them, Arendi S.A.R.L., a company based in Luxembourg. According to Arendi, they believe that Apple has violated three of their patents, but have declined to point out which products in particular have infringed upon them and will argue claim by claim.  According to the patent they’re suing Apple over, it has been described as a “Method, system and computer readable medium for addressing handling from a computer program.” If you’re wondering why this might sound familiar, back in 2009, Arendi went after both Microsoft and Dell over the same patent, and in Markman hearings, it seems that instead of taking it further, both Dell and Microsoft settled with Arendi over an undisclosed amount. With the settlements with Microsoft and Dell acting as precedents, perhaps there is a good chance that Arendi could be successful in their lawsuit against Apple as well.

JLab’s Bouncer Bluetooth speaker now available for $130

For those who are in the market for a new set of speakers with Bluetooth connectivity, JLab has announced the availability of their Bouncer wireless speaker. Featuring two 12W custom-engineered drivers and dual rear bass ports, the Bouncer is said to be able to produce warm and smooth mids, highs and a deep bass. We have yet to try this for ourselves so we can’t really speak to those claims, but if you’re searching for a Bluetooth speaker then perhaps it might be worth checking out. The Bouncer features Bluetooth connectivity of up to 30 feet, while at the same time offering an Aux connector for devices that lack Bluetooth connectivity.

It also comes with a built-in mic and speaker phone, so you could technically use the Bouncer to make your phone calls if you choose to. The speaker also features a USB port that allows for the charging of mobile devices, and since it is USB, you should be able to use it with pretty much any of your mobile devices regardless if it is Android, iOS, WP or Blackberry. Priced at $130, it is available via JLab’s website in either white or black.
