Datel Adapter Connects PS2 Controller to Wii/Wii U: Wii We Want You to PlayStation

I’ve been keeping an eye on the price of the Wii because I want to play Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story. Datel’s soon-to-be-released adapter could prove handy for a longtime PlayStation gamer like me, because it allows one to use a PS2 DualShock controller with the Wii and the new Wii U.

I’m not sure why, but instead of connecting to the console itself, the adapter connects the PS2 controller via the expansion port of the Wii remote control. It also has a button that lets you activate an auto-fire mode, although I don’t know how you’ll select which button to auto-fire or if it will put all buttons on auto-fire when activated. You can pre-order the controller adapter from Amazon Japan for ¥1,781 (~$22 USD).

Insane Blasts of Heat Could Make Flash Memory Live Longer Than Ever

Flash memory is fast, it’s stable, but it’s not without its flaws. It has a tendency to wear out after too many write-erase cycles, for example. Now there’s a way to deal with that problem, and it could lead to self-healing NAND flash memory that could last for much, much longer than the stuff we have now. More »

Watch this Band Play with Killer Gunmetal Instruments

Confiscated weapons are always destroyed, but that doesn’t mean the wreckage can’t be used for something. Artist Pedro Reyes took the remains of 6,700 guns—many of which had probably seen some action—and used their dismembered parts to build instruments for a makeshift gunmetal orchestra. More »

Cart Notes: You Can Read These Cartridges without Blowing on Them

I think back to the days of my old 8-bit NES console and when games came on cartridges. There were definitely advantages of the medium, in that you never had to worry about scratched discs, and they loaded instantly. On the other hand, the contacts got all dirty and dusty and you either had to blow on them or clean them with an eraser to get them to work sometimes. You won’t have to worry about that with these cartridges, though.

That’s because all of the data that’s written to Cart Notes is displayed right on the outside, in plain sight. They look just like the old NES carts, but are actually sticky notes.

Fangamer sells Cart Notes in three-packs for $8(USD), which include orange, green and blue accent colors, and 50 notes per-pack, for a total of 150 sheets of paper. I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t be enough space to write down all of the source code from Duck Hunt, but it is plenty good enough for writing down grocery lists and other reminders.

i.am+ Genius Phone Shown In Music Video

If you have been following us, you may remember our earlier reports on Will.i.am’s genius phone, which is really an iPhone  uber-case coming up for the iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5. Now the artist decided to show off his new gadget during his latest music video “Scream & Shout” featuring himself and Britney Spears. During the video you see numerous pictures of the device. For people that missed out on our last story, let’s us explain you what the hype is all about.

The music artist Will.i.am, also known for being part of the Black Eyed Peas, is making a device that is supposed to make your iPhone a lot better. The device works like a case and attaches to your phone. The device is also known as the i.am+. The case will replace your iPhone’s camera with one of its own. The camera has a 14 megapixel sensor, a nice upgrade from the iPhones 8 megapixels and something totally new for a smartphone: interchangeable lenses. (more…)

New Apple Patent Outlines The Wireless Charging Future We’re All Dreaming Of

Truly wireless charging, it’s a tech utopia we all long for. Sure, we’re getting there, but it still requires contact, which is only slightly better. If places like Starbucks starts putting pads in their tables, hooray, but it’s a far cry from a real charging zone. A recent Apple patent outlines just that, the wireless charging dream we’ve all been dreaming. More »

Dollar Bill Art: Defacing Currency for Our Amusement

Now I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to draw on U.S. currency, but the way I see it, it’s your money and you should be allowed to do what you want with it. So while these hacked dollar bills are probably no longer legal tender, they are pretty damned awesome anyhow.

I can’t decide if Bob Ross, the Oompa Loompa or the Lincoln Facehugger is my favorite. All I know is that I’d totally use cash more often than my debit card if paper money were this funny.

Suunto Ambit update lets athletes build their own GPS watch apps

Suunto Ambit update lets GPS watch athletes build their own sports apps

Extending watches with apps is one thing if you’re building for a smartphone companion with a traditional, developer-centric app model. It’s quite another when it’s a GPS watch, and athletes are building their own apps — yet that’s what Suunto has managed with a 2.0 firmware update to its Ambit outdoor watch. The revamp uses a simple web interface to let us build free sports apps based on criteria as simple as distance and speed through to more specific measurements like heart rate and pressure. Adding predictive routines and arbitrary values allows for situation-specific code we might not get elsewhere, whether it’s estimating the finish time of a marathon or guessing just how much post-run beer is possible before the guilt sets in. On top of the new software platform, the 2.0 update brings a handful of major extensions from Suunto itself, including support for ANT+ and Foot POD sensors as well as an interval timer. The apps and upgrades help justify a relatively steep $500 price for the Ambit by turning it into a Swiss Army Knife for the wrist; when features are dictated more by imagination than a developer’s whims, they might just save the cost of an early hardware replacement.

Portal Cookie Cutters Open a Portal to Your Tummy

Portal is one of the best puzzle-solving games of all time, IMHO. That said, I’ve played through every level of both Portal and Portal 2, and really am jonesing for some new Portal goodness. While it may be a while before Portal 3 gets made, I guess I’ll have to fill that empty place in my heart with some empty carbs. At least if they’re Portal cookies, that might cheer me up a little bit.

portal cookie cutters

These fun cookie cutters were made by Athey Moravetz of WarpZone, and are designed to look like the guy on the warning posters in the games – you know, the little split-in-half dude. You can use them to serve up individual half-cookies, or if you’re feeling generous, you can stick two together using some blue and orange icing to reconstitute a full man-cookie.

If they weren’t cool enough already, they’re also made using 3D printing technology, for added geek cred. You can grab a pair over on Etsy for $5.50(USD).

The cake may have been a lie, but the cookies don’t have to be.
