Marvel Comics Glass Murder: Erik Jensen Allegedly Stabbed Cousin To Death Over Collectible

A bizarre and tragic scene unfolded on Chicago’s northwest side when a man allegedly stabbed his own cousin to death with a pair of scissors–all over a broken Marvel Comics collector glass.

Erik Jensen, 45, who faces first-degree murder charges, reported told police he was “play wrestling” with his cousin, 43-year-old Raymond Ortega, reports the Tribune.

The men had been drinking beer at Ortega’s Union Ridge home in the 5400 block of North Natoma Avenue when Ortega allegedly dropped the Marvel Comics collectors glass, shattering it. The Sun-Times reports there was a heated verbal exchange that soon turned physical.

BookBook for iPhone 5 now shipping, rear camera hole and all (hands-on)

BookBook for iPhone 5 now shipping, rear camera hole and all handson

It took a little longer than some of those other cases, but Twelve South‘s BookBook for iPhone 5 is now shipping en masse. Some of those who pre-ordered began receiving their units as early as last week, but if you missed that wave, there’s no need to gesture for the panic button. The outfit’s newest wallet / iPhone case is actually more than just a resized version of the prior one; indeed, it finally figured out how to add a rear camera hole without worry of flash echo, and there’s a new snap-in mechanism that holds your phone in place. The clever exterior remains largely the same, and there’s still room for your most important IDs and credit cards as you flip it open. We were pretty big fans of the prior build, but the addition of the camera hole makes this one a no-brainer for fans of the style. The gallery below is completely free to peruse — those who hit the source link, however, will be asked to fork over $59.99 to get one of their own.

Gigantic Monsters With Atomic Hearts

Foot-power might be enough to get you across the house, and gas packs enough punch to get you across the country by car, bus, or plane. Coal had its time to reign as the king of the rails, and electricity is poised to take the world by storm. But when you’ve got a real job to do, when you’ve got to move mountains and make the sky shake, there’s only one place to turn: that basic force of universal power that man has bent to his whim. We’re talking atomic power, baby. And nothing beats it. Here are some monsters that use it to its fullest. More »

REDRAY 4K Cinema Player Puts Theater Quality Images in Your Media Room

While there are already a handful of displays on the market with 4K pixel resolution, they’re extremely expensive, and there’s very little content available for them. Now, RED Digital Cinema has announced a new video player capable of outputting 4K video without breaking the bank too badly.

redray 4k player 1

The REDRAY player can play native 4K (4096×2160) resolution video files. It can output these to either a single 4K display through an HDMI 1.4 connector, or to a grid of four monitors using four HDMI 1.3 connectors. It’s also capable of playback of 3D content, as well as high frame rate content at 48 or 60fps (like the new Hobbit movie.)

While the player is clearly designed primarily for commercial installations, you can certainly use it in your home theater if you’ve got a way to get 4K source material – like if you shoot some with a RED camera, and prep the files using REDCINE-X PRO.

You can also use the player to upscale standard H.264 HD content to 4K resolution as well. Inside, it’s got a 1TB SATA hard drive for storing up to 100 hours of 4k content, and can receive content via Internet download, SD card or USB flash media. Its audio capabilties aren’t too shabby either, and it supports up to 7.1 channel LPCM sources in 24-bit, 48Khz quality. It also offers wireless remote control via IR or 802.11n.

You can pre-order the REDRAY over at the RED store now for $1450(USD). RED expect to start shipping them in Q1 2013.

iFixit pries open new 21.5-inch iMac, finds twin mics and a glued on display

iFixit pries open new 215inch iMac, finds twin mics and a glued on display

We got an early teardown of the latest 21,5-inch iMac thanks Japanese site Kodawarisan, but now it’s had the full iFixit treatment. The overall verdict? Well iFixit weren’t overly enthused with some of the new design’s internal fixings, making a special reference to the use of glue to bind the LCD and glass to the rest of the frame, instead of magnets as found in previous models. Likewise, those two major components are now fused together meaning if you want to replace one, you’ll be replacing the other, too. This adhesive also contributes to the trickiness of general repair. Beyond the glue-based concerns, there’s the usual intense poring over of internal like the dual mics found at the rear, or the 2.5-inch HGST / Western Digital hard drive. Overall, though, the tone is a definite thumbs down when it comes to repairability, with the device getting just 3 out of 10 on it’s now famous meter. Mujjo Leather Touchscreen Gloves: Use Your Smartphone With Style This Winter

When it gets cold, it’s not so easy to use your smartphone. Even though you can eventually get it to work after trying a couple of times, eventually you end up frustrated enough to simply pull off your gloves. While there are plenty of touchscreen-enabled gloves on the market these days, most of them are made out of synthetics – which aren’t the warmest or most stylish materials. These leather gloves will allow you to keep your hands toasty warm while using your touchscreen device – and look good doing it.

The Mujjo Leather Touchscreen Gloves are made from Ethiopian lambskin, which has been treated for wind and water resistance. They have “nanotechnology” integrated into the leather to make them touchscreen compatible, emulating the conductivity of human skin. There is also a leather strap on the heel to tighten them around your wrist.

New iMac Teardown Reveals Dual Microphones, Hard To Reach RAM

imac-ifixit-inside

As you might have expected, the new iMac redesign that introduces a much slimmer case also has some negative consequences for overall device repairability and DIY upgrades, iFixit’s teardown of the machine has revealed. The site’s traditional peek under the hood of Apple’s latest all-in-one also shows off some impressive feats of engineering to fit all that good stuff in a much sleeker package.

In good news, RAM, hard drive and CPU are all possible to replace, should things go wrong or should users want to upgrade their memory or internal storage. The bad news, though, is that unlike on previous generation iMacs, none of these pieces are easily accessible. iMacs used to at least have user-accessible RAM trays on the underside of their face, which actually made it really easy to swap out upgrades. Now, while it’s still not soldered to the motherboard like on the latest Retina MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs, getting at the RAM requires removing the screen, and also behind the logic board, meaning you’ll have to essentially take the iMac completely apart to change things up.

In better news, the iMac packs some engineering changes that will help with user experience, including dual microphones to make FaceTime calling and general audio input without mics better overall. And iFixit says that the friction stir welding used to combine case pieces together isn’t just marketing smoke; it should create strengthened welds without traditional weak spots due to areas that are completely melted and reformed. Apple has also moved from three fans to just one, which is located near the iMac’s rear back bulge (which is mostly accounted for by the iMac’s main Wi-Fi antenna), and saves a ton of space versus previous designs.

Be sure to check out the entire teardown if you’re after the gritty details, but the main takeaway here might be that the iMac has seen a drop from a 7 out of 10 to a 2 out of 10 in terms of iFixit’s repairability score between generations. That’s not the best news for DIY-ers, but Apple is clearly of the opinion that the dramatic design changes more than make up for internal component accessibility sacrifices.

Sony’s $25,000 XBR 4K LED Ultra HDTV and tablet remote control hands-on

DNP Sony XBR 4K LED Ultra HDTV eyeson Impressions

Recently Sony invited us to check out its forthcoming 84-inch XBR 4K LED TV and we couldn’t resist an opportunity to get an idea of how well the company’s $25,000 flagship stacked up against the competition. Perhaps trying to simulate an in-home viewing experience, Sony packed its gargantuan TV into a family room setting and allowed us to give it a spin. While we didn’t get to channel surf freely, the provided stock media did a great job of highlighting the display’s capabilities. Images were crisp but fluid, while colors remained strong and organic. One of our biggest concerns was that things would look too good and possibly appear unnatural.

But the XBR-84X900 managed to produce an excellent picture with stellar viewing angles. As for the content itself, we were treated to a collection of pre-loaded clips running off of Sony’s recently announced 4K media server controlled by the system’s included Xperia Tablet S. It should be noted that The Amazing Spider-Man was listed as a 56.4GB file — compared to its Blu-ray counterpart, which comes in at an almost modest 36GB. Check after the break for more of our impressions, and a look at the tablet (loaded with a remote control app) that’s included.
