FCC Eases Rules For Quicker In Flight Internet Deployment

As silly as it seems to use 20,000 pounds of potatoes to test wireless signals, there’s absolutely a good reason behind it and the FCC announced today new rules that will help get more potatoes into the seats of decommissioned planes.

Actually, today’s news will help speed up the process of deploying Internet services onto aircraft by defining ESAA, or Earth Stations Aboard Aircraft which are used to provide in-flight Internet services, as a licensed application that would allow for airlines to test and receive approval as long as their system doesn’t interfere with the aircraft’s systems.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski shared what exactly the organizations news rules would mean to the average passenger:

“These new rules will help airlines and broadband providers offer high-speed Internet to passengers, including by accelerating by up to 50 percent the processing of applications to provide broadband on planes.”

I don’t know about you, but the more Internet there is on my flight, the less anxious I feel about flying as I have become one of those people who need constant Internet access wherever they go. Let’s just hope today’s news doesn’t create a spike in potato demand as I won’t agree to trading in a constant flow of french fries for the chance of my flight having Internet any time soon.

Leftover Halo 4 features found lurking in game code

We all know that a game changes very frequently during the development process – some features get fully implemented and make it to the finished product, while others are only partially developed and ultimately get left on the cutting room floor. It’s no different with Halo 4, and today we’re finding out that there were a couple particularly cool armor abilities 343 Industries had to do away with before shipping the game. They were discovered by the folks at TheHaloCouncil, who did a little bit of digging in Halo 4‘s code and filmed a video showing off these armor abilities that almost were.

halo4_SWATupdate

Say hello to the Hacker and Teleport armor abilities, which you can see in action with the video posted below. Teleport is pretty self-explanatory, as it lets you jump a short distance almost instantly. As you can imagine, having an armor ability like that would be great for closing the gap quickly so you can get in and perform an assassination before the other player has a chance to react.

The Hacker ability is definitely the coolest of the two, as it allows you to disable the armor abilities of other players. See someone sneaking around with active camouflage on? Use the Hacker to disable their cloak and expose them to the world. The Hacker ability seems like it would go a long way in evening the odds against nearly every other armor ability out there, which might just be why we didn’t see it in the final game.

While the host of the video speculates that these armor abilities might be released in future Halo 4 DLC, a Microsoft representative told Kotaku that these are merely “legacy items” and the studio doesn’t have any plans to implement more armor abilities in the future. While that’s a bummer, it was nice to catch a glimpse of canned features despite the fact that we’ll probably never get to use them in regular gameplay.

More Huawei Ascend Mate images appear

Last weekend, we posted a few photos of Huawei‘s upcoming Ascend Mate phablet-style smartphone. The images definitely gave us some perspective on just how gigantic this thing really is, and today we’ve been treated with a couple more images that reveal the overall style and shape of the new device.

The new images show off the top and bottom of the Ascend Mate, revealing a centered microUSB port on the bottom, and a headphone jack and SIM card slot at the top. The images also point out the obvious curvature the the Ascend Mate has, and while the color scheme isn’t too exciting, the dark blue and grey seems to go well together in this case.

If you’re not up to snuff on Huawei’s latest, we’ll give you a quick refresher. The Ascend Mate is a 6.1-inch phablet-style handset with a 1080p display. The company doesn’t classify the device as a tablet, despite its huge 6.1-inch screen, which almost creeps into 7-inch tablet territory, but we’re assuming a lot of people will call it a tablet themselves.

As far as other specs are concerned, we’re expected to see a 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a whopping 13MP rear camera, and a gigantic 4,000mAh battery to power the whole package. We’re pretty sure that this will be the device to take on Samsung’s Galaxy Note II, but we’ll have to wait until CES in January to find out what it’s capable of.

TARDIS Engagement Ring Box is Shinier on the Inside

When you care enough to give the very best, you’d best give it in something as awesomely geeky as this custom TARDIS ring box, built by Modelmaker Paul Pape. Give it to your favorite companion and let them know how you feel.
tardis ring box
Unlike the actual TARDIS, this one has rings inside instead of a control panel. And since these rings are a symbol of how your heart feels, it really is bigger on the inside. It holds two rings and even lights up. Paul created all of the wiring and switches himself, and the box is made out of micro plywood and sheets of his laser-cut wood door and window model pieces called Pop-Out Woodies.

He’s actually made a couple of versions of the box – one with doors that open to reveal a pair of rings, and the other that pops up from the top and holds a single ring.

When you give one of these, it says “I really like you. Care to step inside my big blue box?”

Paul makes all sorts of awesome custom engagement ring boxes, and you can order one for yourself for between $300 and $800(USD) depending on the complexity.

Airport Chatter Makes Travel More Social On Your iPhone

With the holiday season behind us, you may not be planning on traveling for another year, unless you’re currently counting down the hours left in your work day until you get away for a New Years trip. If you’d like to experience more from the airports you’ll be making your way through this weekend, you might want to give Airport Chatter a download.

Airport Chatter is an application for the iPhone that makes your experiences at the airport more social. You can view your airport within the app to check out profiles for the various shops and services, their hours of operation, location and even check into them and post or read reviews. Think Yelp, but specifically for airports.

As helpful as finding and learning more of venues inside of an airport is, especially when you absolutely need a Cinnabon at 3 a.m., the application has big ambitions as it would like to be your go-to app for airline travel to include the ability to track flights, booking transportation to and from the airport and even chatting with fellow travelers who you would otherwise ignore.

iPad mini tipped to make a massive splash in China

We’re used to hearing about Apple devices selling out here in the US, and it appears that in China things aren’t much different. Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White is saying today that iPad minis are flying off shelves there, after its launch in Hong Kong on back in November and China earlier this month. According to White, many stores in China and Hong Kong are out of stock, while the fourth-generation iPad, which launched at the same time, is still relatively easy to get.

So, it would appear that the iPad mini is quite a bit more popular than the fourth-gen iPad, something that White attributes to the smaller size and price tag. “Prior to the China launch, we indicated that the iPad Mini would be the ‘next big thing in China’ and we believe this phenomenon is starting to develop,” he said in a note to CNET. “In our view, the smaller form factor and lower price point will allow Apple to sell the iPad Mini in more meaningful volumes versus the regular-size iPad.”

The iPhone 5 has been selling well too, though unlike the iPad Mini, it remains readily available. Apple has experienced some issues with yields when it comes to iPad mini components, which means that the company hasn’t been able to keep up with demand. A recent rumor said yields are improving though, and that Apple should be able to sell as many as 13 million iPad minis in quarter 1, 2013.

Achieving that figure relies heavily on Apple getting these yield issues sorted out, which we hear are mainly affecting iPad mini screens. Whatever the issue, you can bet that it’s a top priority for Apple to get more iPad minis shipping out to stores. We’ll see if Apple can hit that 13 million mark soon enough, as quarter 1 2013 is right around the corner. Stay tuned.
