Apple prototypes of the 80′s unveiled

The designer known as Hartmut Esslinger has revealed an amazing treasure trove of never before seen designs from the Apple archives this week in a book by the name of “Design Forward.” This book was launched this week at the opening event of an exhibition by the name of “German Design Standards – from Bauhaus to Globalization” and was delivered first to the folks at Design Boom where they’ve been allowed to display many of the images within. What we’re being shown here is a set of Apple products designed – at least in part – by Hartmut Esslinger himself during his time with what would become one of the most iconic hardware companies in history.

The man himself, Esslinger, worked with Sony in the mid 1970s with their trinitron and wega ranges, moving up to Apple in the early 1980s. If you’ll remember from earlier this year when many early Apple designs were revealed during their legendary court case with Samsung, the idea that they’d replicate Sony designs was spoken of more than once. As it appears here, Esslinger had a problem with these requests for a Sony look for desktop computers, too. Esslinger stayed with Apple until 1990, where soon after Steve Jobs was cut from Apple, he broke his own contract and followed Jobs to NeXT.

Above you’ll see an early “Apple Snow White 2 macbook” from 1982 – not that every single image in this post comes courtesy of Esslinger and is via Designboom. The first image in this post goes by the name “Apple Snow White 1 Lisa Workstation” and is from 1982 as well – not the converting angle of the display and the lovely integration of the Apple logo rainbow colors in the side of the machine. Below this paragraph you’ll see the Apple “Baby Mac” from 1985 – rather sleek, isn’t it?

Above you’ll see a rather drab (by today’s standards) looking machine tagged with the name “Apple Snow White 1 Sony Style” from 1982. Of this design Esslinger writes, “Concept 1 was defined by ‘what sony would do if it built computers’. I didn’t like this idea, as it could create conflicts with Sony, but Steve insisted. He felt that sony’s simple cool design language should be a good benchmark, and Sony was the current pacesetter in making high-tech consumer products smarter, smaller and more portable.”

Below you’ll find two early masterpieces – one of them a tablet, the other a phone. Imagine that, the earliest iPad and the earliest iPhone, together under one roof. The first goes by the name “Apple Snow White 1 Tablet Mac” and is from 1982, the second is the “Apple Snow White 3 Macphone” from 1984. This was the same year that Apple burst forth with Macintosh and changed their destiny forever – imagine if they’d simply released a phone with a massive display instead?

Curiosity spends holidays in Yellowknife Bay, immortalized on special Foursquare badge

Curiosity spends holidays in Yellowknife Bay, gets on special Foursquare badge

While many of us were opening presents and having our fill of mulled cider, NASA’s trusty Curiosity rover was busy at work capturing panoramic views of Yellowknife Bay, a shallow area of unusual terrain on the Red planet. Jokingly dubbed “Grandma’s house” by the crew, the rover spent over 11 Martian days there so that handlers could take some time off for the holidays. When they get back, the space vehicle will hopefully have provided enough data to pinpoint a potential drilling area so it can drill, collect and analyze rock samples using onboard tools — a feat never-before attempted on Mars.

The Curiosity rover has, however, checked in on Foursquare on Mars, which is a feat no one else is likely to attempt. In continued collaboration with the social media platform, NASA is now providing a Curiosity Explorer badge to anyone who checks in to a NASA visitor center or a venue categorized as a science museum or planetarium. Badge recipients will get this message: “Get out your rock-vaporizing laser! You’ve explored your scientific curiosities just like NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars. Stay curious and keep exploring. You never know what you’ll find.” No idea if you’ll get a free “scoop” of space ice cream or a hand in the next Mars mission along with it, but we’re behind anything that boosts the public’s interest in space.

The Year In Comedy Movies

A year ago, we reflected on a raunchy, female-dominated, fairly diverse year in comedy and concluded that 2012 would likely bring a similarly strong crop of films. Coming out of 2011’s Bridesmaids-induced box office boost, 2012 promised eagerly awaited new works from Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Woody Allen; plenty of reboots and sequels (The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall, The Amazing Spider Man, MIB3, 21 Jump Street); an end to Twilight; and the birth of The Hunger Games and The Hobbit.  Among all the action, young adult, and animated films rolling out each week, comedy fans didn’t have quite as many premieres to look forward to; but though there may have been fewer high profile comedies on the charts, 2012 saw several unexpected highlights, a spike in independent releases, and a marked increase in the attention paid to expanding the comedy lineup at acclaimed festivals like Sundance, Cannes, and SXSW.

Galaxy S3 Mini Dropped From Apple’s Patent Claims Against Samsung

By Dan Levine

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 28 (Reuters) – Apple Inc has agreed to withdraw patent claims against a new Samsung phone with a high-end display after Samsung said it was not offering to sell the product in the crucial U.S. market.

Apple disclosed the agreement in a filing on Friday in U.S. District Court in San Jose, California.

Last month Apple asked to add the Galaxy S III Mini and other Samsung products, including several tablet models, to its wide-ranging patent litigation against Samsung.

In response, Samsung said the Galaxy S III Mini was not available for sale in the United States and should not be included in the case.

Apple won a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung earlier this year, but has failed to secure a permanent sales ban against several, mostly older Samsung models. The patents Apple is asserting against the Galaxy S III Mini are separate from those that went to trial.

Samsung started selling the Mini in Europe in October, to compete with Apple’s iPhone 5. In its filing on Friday in U.S. District Court, for the Northern District of California, Apple said its lawyers were able to purchase “multiple units” of the Mini from Amazon.com Inc’s U.S. retail site and have them delivered within the country.

But Samsung represented that it is not “making, using, selling, offering to sell or importing the Galaxy S III Mini in the United States.” Based on that, Apple said it agreed to withdraw its patent claims on the Mini, “so long as the current withdrawal will not prejudice Apple’s ability later to accuse the Galaxy S III Mini if the factual circumstances change.”

A Samsung official declined to comment. Apple could not immediately be reached for comment.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Launching April With S Pen [Rumor]

Samsung Galaxy S4 Launching April With S Pen [Rumor]

We caught a glimpse of a Samsung Galaxy S4 concept video earlier this morning, but let’s return from the land of make-believe for a minute to take care of some real Samsung business, shall we? We know many of you, like us, are highly anticipating the reveal and release of the next Samsung Galaxy S device, which may be coming in nearly four months from now and may pack a little surprise if a recent rumor turns out to be true.

According to Korean website Enuri, Samsung plans to launch its Galaxy S4 in April 2013 that sports a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, a quad-core Exynos 5440 chip, 13-megapixel rear auto-focus camera and an S Pen, which previously was only made available for Samsung’s Galaxy Note line of smartphones and tablet.

Seeing how Samsung is going to be a total buzzkill and not announce the Galaxy S4 at CES next week, we’ll just need to sit back and wait until they decide to officially unveil their next Galaxy S phone, which if it’s launching in April, may be sometime next Spring.

3 New Years Eve-Worthy Updos For Short, Medium And Long Hair (VIDEO)

The countdown is on. You probably have an outfit ready for New Year’s Eve, but what’s your hair game plan for the big night? Updos seem an obvious choice, but not all styles work for every hair length.

Super-short hair can be a little tricky, but as we see in this video from Elle, it’s quite simple to sleekly tuck it back without using a million bobby pins. Start by spraying in dry shampoo to create a little texture — this will keep hair from slipping out. Then pull everything back into a low twist, but leave a little volume on top. Employ an extra-large hair pin, which will firmly anchor the style in place.

A soft, romantic option for mid-length hair is a faux bob. The key is making it subtly disheveled, which lends a understated sexiness to the style. Find chin-grazing layers around the crown of the head. Leaving those loose, pull the rest of the hair into a low ponytail. Use a bobby pin to tuck and effectively hide the ponytail underneath — this creates the faux bob. Next, use a 1-inch curling iron to give the front pieces a bit of wave. Tousle hair all over to make sure there are loose strands all around, as well as ensuring the ponytail is still concealed.

Fiscal Cliff Polls Show Americans Increasingly Pessimistic About Resolution

With just days before the fiscal cliff is reached, public opinion is growing increasingly pessimistic about the prospects of a deal.

An online HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted Wednesday and Thursday found that 51 percent of Americans thought a fiscal cliff deal was not very or not at all likely, up from 36 percent in late November. Only 8 percent thought a deal was very likely.
